Three immigration officers, 2 others injured in violent attack at Ayigya

-

Five people, including three immigration officers, have sustained injuries following a violent mob attack at Ayigya within the Oforikrom Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

Accra-based Citi News reported that the incident occurred on Tuesday evening.

The mob, allegedly led by a neighbour of the officers, stormed a two-story Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) property armed with machetes and other weapons.

A protracted property dispute is believed to have triggered the attack.

The neighbour, who claims ownership of the building, has reportedly been harassing the officers to evict them.

Although three different court rulings have favoured GIS, the neighbour has allegedly resorted to intimidation and violence.

The angry mob is said to have attempted to set the building and its occupants ablaze.

The group, according to eyewitnesses, succeeded in burning portions of the building.

They also made away with mobile phones and an undisclosed amount of money.

Reports suggest that seven people, including the primary suspect, have been arrested, but the Immigration Service is yet to comment on the incident.
