This simple mistake is making your mask unsafe, experts warn

-

01/8Avoid making this mistake while wearing a mask

In the times of COVID, wearing a mask is one of the many ways to keep yourself safe and prevent the risk of infections. However, wearing a mask isn’t the most comfortable thing ever, especially for long hours. It can make you scratchy, sweaty and even a bit claustrophobic.

Add to this, if you are not wearing one the right way, i.e., creating grievous mask mistakes, you are actually risking your own health. Experts also say that some of the mistakes, even when you are sick can make it potentially unsafe.

02/8Here’s what you need to know

Even though masks have been made mandatory by several authorities and considered as one of the best forms of defence by CDC, one mistake which could be making it less effective is coughing into your mask repeatedly.

03/8Here’s why

Even though masks reduce the risk of transmission when you are sick or in close contact of someone who is showing symptoms, masks cannot stop ALL the droplets which you spread when you cough. Meaning, using a mask or a protective gear can stop the spread of certain droplets, but even then, sometimes droplets can travel up to 3 feet distance.

For the same, research was conducted by scientists from the University of Nicosia in Cyprus, who used computer models to study how far droplets could spread. It was observed that even with good masks, droplets could travel up to a certain distance.

04/8Why does this happen

This mainly happens because of air pressure which builds up when you are wearing a mask, which expels out certain irritants and droplets.

05/8So, are mask ineffective?

It was observed that the smallest of droplets were able to travel the farthest. While this needs more scientific backing, it was also observed that wearing a mask was able to cut down on the risk by a certain level. As compared to those who donned the PPE, viral transmission from those unmasked went up to twice as far.

06/8Do not skip wearing a mask

Wearing a mask effectively reduces the amount of saliva when someone coughs into a room, implying that if sick people wear masks, everyone else will be better protected.

07/8Which is the best kind of face mask during COVID-19?

There are many different types of masks available in the market. While N95 masks provide the highest level of protection, reusable cloth masks and surgical ones work well as well. The only thing you should ensure is their proper disposal and care.

At the same time, it’s also vital that you wear it the right way. It cannot be stressed enough. It might be a little uncomfortable but they are the only thing which can keep you safe right now. Do not have any loose ends, avoid touching the mask, or removing it to talk are some mistakes to avoid. Make sure you use a mask which fits your size.

08/8What’s the best form of defence then?

Wearing of face masks is only one measure against preventing coronavirus and a possible second wave as countries around the world begin to reopen. Practising social distancing, avoiding crowds, washing and sanitizing surfaces frequently and ensuring proper disposal of masks can cut down the risk of COVID-19.
