Third cohort of Media Capacity Enhancement Programme underway

-

The Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, launched the third cohort of the Media Capacity Enhancement Programme (MCEP) at the University of Media Arts and Communication (UNIMAC) in Accra.

The programme aims to equip media professionals with advanced skills to bolster their role in Ghana’s democracy.

Forty journalists will attend the training in person, while 60 will join virtually.

The participants, including reporters, producers, social media executives, and media critics, were selected by an independent working committee.

The Minister emphasised the importance of well-informed and capable media in the democratic process, praising the program’s impact and recognition as a formidable tool for enhancing journalists’ work.

She lauded her predecessor, the current housing minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah for laying the foundation for the programme, which has become a cornerstone of media training in Ghana.

The MCEP, first launched in January 2022, aims to equip media professionals with the skills necessary to advance the nation’s development.

Over 100 journalists have benefited from the training in previous cohorts.

The programme, supported by the Volta River Authority and MTN, features interactive discussions and experienced facilitators.

The minister encouraged participants to seize the opportunity to broaden their skills, stressing the importance of professionalism and integrity in their work.

She noted, “I am excited to see the commitment and enthusiasm of all the participants. This programme is not just a scheduled event; it is an essential step in enhancing our democracy and media environment”.

Mrs. Abubakar said, “The media is a very strong instrument that carries a lot of responsibility. You have a vital responsibility to enlighten and educate the public, and you must do so with honesty and a dedication to the truth.”

The opening ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including the Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAC, the Chairperson of the National Media Commission, and representatives from media associations and partners.

The four-day programme will conclude on Friday, September 13, 2024.
