Chief Executive Officer of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, has said there has been significant changes and improvements under his leadership.
In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Dr. Ampomah, said there were lots of leakages before he took over the institution.
“There were lots of leakages in Korle Bu before I took over but my leadership has brought a lot of changes.”
He noted that while Korle Bu, an agency under the Ministry of Health, has its challenges, it is far from the “crime scene” that some people claim it to be.
Dr. Ampomah explained that, each department within Korle Bu has its own management team to ensure everyone is held accountable.
“We have implemented a system that brings transparency and accountability. Now, people understand what is involved. As a result, the quality of data has improved to 73% compared to previous years” he said.
With the support of the hospital’s board, which includes experts from diverse backgrounds, Dr. Ampomah has overseen several successful reforms.
He cited how the hospital managed to save nearly GHS250,000 monthly on food expenses in 2023 by tightening supervision and making major changes to their procurement processes as an example.
“Before the reforms, we were losing a huge amount of money on food. We used to buy from suppliers, but the food wasn’t enough. Now, we’ve made significant savings,” he stated.
Another crucial reform involved surgical equipment, where previous mismanagement led to significant financial waste.
Dr. Ampomah’s leadership has secured these areas, allowing the hospital to accurately track all consumables.
“In all the departments, especially those that are cash cows, we’ve ensured that proper measures are in place,” he concluded.
