There should be no re-run in Ashanti Region – Former Council of State member

A former Eastern Regional Representative of the Council of State, Nana Somuah Mireku Nyampong III, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to rule out any re-run in the disrupted Ashanti Regional Council of State election.

According to him, the perpetrators of the chaos must be punished to serve as a deterrent.

His comments follow the confusion that erupted during the election on Tuesday, allegedly caused by thugs linked to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The individuals reportedly disrupted the process by tearing apart ballot papers and overpowering police officers to reach the Electoral Commission’s table, where ballots were being sorted.

Speaking on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM, Nana Somuah, who was present at the election, described the incident as unacceptable.

“Nothing was pleasing about it, and I don’t even think we should consider a re-run for people to feel they can always have their way,” he stated.

He disclosed that one of the aspirants, Chief of Agric Nzema, Nana Nkansah Boadu, had already secured more than 40 votes—enough for a simple majority—before the disruption occurred.

“There were still some papers in the ballot box, but all the people present can confirm that Nana Nkansah secured 40-plus votes. So why the re-run?” he questioned.

Expressing concern over the politicization of the election, he emphasized that Ghana has made progress in democratic governance and should not allow such incidents to derail the process.

Meanwhile, supporters of Nana Nkansah Boadu have declared him the winner, insisting that EC officials had counted the majority of ballots in his favor before the disruption.
