Traders and buyers at the Nsawam cassava and plantain market in the Nsawam-Adoagyire Municipality of the Eastern Region have expressed concerns over low sales and soaring prices.
Speaking on People’s Forum, a segment on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Thursday, many traders complained about rising costs due to bad roads and high transportation fees.
“The market is low, the prices of goods are high. The roads from Asuboi to Mangoase are terrible, especially when it rains. We end up using motorbikes because drivers refuse to take the route. For even small loads, cars charge us between 300 and 350 cedis,” one trader lamented.
Another vendor explained that, the cost of goods from farms has increased drastically.
“We buy bunches of plantain for 70 cedis, but after transportation and other expenses, we have to sell it for around 90 cedis. Customers complain, so we sometimes sell at the same price we bought it,” she said.
“The work we do is seasonal. During the rainy season, there are more food supplies such as cassava and plantain. However, people are still not buying because they are complaining that things are expensive. When we get the produce from the farms, we have to pay for the mode of transport to get it to the market,” a trader stated.
Despite the availability of cassava and plantain during the rainy season, both traders and buyers expressed frustrations amid high prices.
“Things are very expensive. You bring a lot of money to the market and go home with very little food.”
“Sometimes I blame the people who sell in our various communities. They buy items cheaply in the market but then increase the prices at home,” she added.
