The People’s Forum: Residents protest over lack of traffic lights on Awoshie-Anyaa road

Residents of the Anyaa in the Anyaa-Sowutuom constituency of the Greater Accra Region have voiced their concerns over the lack of functioning traffic lights and streetlights on the major road, which they say has led to multiple accidents.

Speaking on People’s Forum, a segment on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Thursday, the residents expressed their frustration and called on the government to take immediate action to address the issue.

“We’ve been planning to address this issue for a long time,” one resident said.

“The traffic light is not working, the streetlight is not working, and we’ve lost two people this week to accidents on this road. This is a major road, and we are begging the government to do something about it.”

Another resident recounted a recent incident where two people were hit by a car due to the lack of traffic lights, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention.

“Yesterday, two people were hit by a car. Our people are dying. We want them to fix the road. If they don’t, we will block the road again” he said.

The residents also criticized the Police, particularly the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), for not adequately supervising the area.

“The painful thing is that a police station is close to this place, but the MTTDs who are supposed to monitor the road do not do their jobs. Instead, they go to the market road to stop cars and arrest them. The lights are not working, so there should be a police officer to control the cars.”

The Anyaa Police Commander reportedly assured the residents that the traffic light would be fixed within seven days.

However, the residents warned that they would take further action if the issue is not resolved.

The Assembly Member for Anyaa West, Michael Acquah, confirmed that the streetlights have been non-functional since the road was constructed in 2020.

“We’ve been assured that it will be fixed, but it wasn’t. My sources tell me that the contractor who was supposed to work on the streetlights hasn’t been paid. The traffic light is not our only problem; we need streetlights,” he stated.
