The People’s Forum: Opera Square traders protest planned eviction

-

Traders at the Opera Square business hub in Accra are protesting against an alleged eviction, amid redevelopment plans.

They claim the area has been sold to Chinese developers.

Speaking on People’s Forum, a segment on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Thursday, the traders expressed outrage over the situation, stating that their shops and homes are under threat of demolition.

“Some Chinese men came here during the weekend to take measurements of the place,” one trader reported.

“There are also ongoing projects nearby, which we’ve heard are illegal and now they want to use the same illegal means to evict us. The government is depriving us of our basic right to survival, and we won’t allow that.”

The traders, who rely on their shops for their livelihoods, voiced concerns over the potential loss of their businesses and homes.

“If they demolish our shops, it will disturb us. This is how we feed our families, what are we going to do if everything is taken away from us?” one resident questioned.

“We have our houses here, and this place has been a terminal for so long. Many politicians have held rallies here. The regional minister assured us there would be no demolition, but we are hearing different things now, which is why we want our concerns heard before it escalates.”

The Opera Square traders are further calling for government intervention to halt the planned eviction and protect their rights.

“Something needs to be done about this, they can just come one day and demolish this place” a trader bemoaned.
