Tensions are escalating at the National Police Training School in Tesano, Accra, as the re-collation of parliamentary election results for Suhum, Nsawam, Fanteakwa North, and Akwatia constituencies continues under heightened security.
The exercise, overseen by the Electoral Commission (EC), was relocated to Tesano after disputes during the initial collation in the Eastern Region stalled the process.
Concerns have been raised by various stakeholders, particularly the National Democratic Congress (NDC), whose representatives have questioned the fairness and transparency of the relocated collation.
The EC’s decision to move the exercise to Accra followed disagreements between party agents and EC officials over the accuracy and integrity of the results, leading to a deadlock in the Eastern Region.
The NDC has criticized the relocation, arguing it undermines the credibility of the electoral process.
In contrast, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has defended the move, describing it as necessary to ensure order and accuracy.
Speaking to Citi News, Peter Boamah Otokunor, Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, expressed grave concerns over the process.
“We were invited to the National Police Training School to continue with the collation. Our executives from Nsawam and Suhum were present, but when I arrived, the exercise had already begun without representation from Akwatia. I asked how a collation exercise could proceed without all parties present and demanded that the process be halted because it was unlawful.
“I approached the Regional EC Director and pleaded for two hours to bring the Akwatia officers to the venue, but he refused, citing orders from above,” Otokunor added.
