In the latest Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) for 2023, Ghana’s primary ports, Tema and Takoradi, have shown troubling standings.

Tema Port is ranked 376th out of 405 ports worldwide, while Takoradi Port stands at 274th.

These rankings represent a significant decline from their positions in the 2022 report, where Tema was ranked 205th and Takoradi 245th out of 348 ports.

The top performers in the CPPI 2023 are Yangshan Port in China, maintaining its first place, followed by the Port of Salalah in Oman, which retains second place from the previous year.

Cartagena moved up to third place from fifth, while Tangier Mediterranean retained its fourth position.

Tanjung Pelepas improved to fifth place, Ningbo rose from 12th to seventh, and Port Said advanced from 16th to 10th. Conversely, Khalifa Port dropped from third in 2022 to 29th in 2023, and Hamad Port fell from eighth to 11th.

Ports are crucial for international trade, and their efficiency has a substantial impact on a country’s economic development.

The low rankings of Tema and Takoradi ports highlight the need for substantial improvements to enhance their capacity and efficiency, better accommodating the growing demands of global trade.

Efforts to improve port performance might include investing in modern infrastructure, streamlining operations, and adopting advanced technologies to enhance cargo handling and clearance times.

By addressing these issues, Tema and Takoradi ports could improve their standings in future CPPI reports, strengthening Ghana’s position in the global maritime industry.

The CPPI report, compiled by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence’s Maritime, Trade, and Supply Chain division, aims to serve as a benchmark for improvements among key global stakeholders, including national governments, port authorities, development agencies, and various entities in trade, logistics, and supply chain services.
