A pupil-teacher in Obuasi, Richmond Nana Boison Benyenu, is standing trial at an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly failing to go by his promise to marry his victim and equally defrauding her of an amount of GH¢10,127 to rent a house.
He is said to have gone ahead to marry another woman, a situation which makes his victim constantly unhappy and depressed.
Benyenu pleaded guilty to the offence of engaging in domestic violence by means of psychological or emotional abuse and defrauding by false pretence at the court presided over by Mrs Rita Abrokwa Doko.
The court, however, admitted him to bail in the sum of GH¢5,000 with two sureties and the case was adjourned to September 23, 2019.

Prosecution
DSP Agnes Boafo told the court that the complainant, who is the victim, is a nurse in the United Kingdom but currently in Ghana and resides at Tema Community 25.
She said the accused person, Richmond Nana Boison Benyenu, is a pupil-teacher at Obuasi and also a married man with a child.
Prosecution said both the complainant and Benyenu had been in a relationship for a year and decided to get married.
In the process, she said Benyenu went to the complainant’s family to perform the knocking rites with the intention of marrying her.

DSP Boafo explained that the complainant went back to London and Benyenu called to inform her that he had to rent a house at Klagon in the Sakumono area but did not have sufficient funds and, therefore, needed her assistance of GH¢6,680 to enable him to do so.
Aside from that, the prosecution said, Benyenu asked the complainant to send him another GH¢10,127 as his visa fee.
The complainant, therefore, sent those monies to Benyenu through the Unity Link.

According to the complainant, “she was doing all these with the aim that Benyenu would marry her but while in London, she called Benyenu several times on his mobile phone but he never picked her calls”, the prosecution said.
She said the complainant reported the issue to the police DOVVSU and with the help of the Obuasi police, Benyenu was arrested.
