The Wenchi Traditional Council in the Bono Region has arrested five suspected illegal miners, including a Chinese national, in the Wenchi Municipality.

The task force, set up by Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, the President of the Council, made the arrest around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at an illegal mining site in Atuna, a farming community in the area.

The task force also seized four excavators, two washing machines, and private Ford vehicles, and has since handed the suspects and the seized equipment to the Wenchi Divisional Police Command.

Mr. Reindorf Oware, the Special Aid to Osagyefo Tabrako III, who is also the Paramount Chief of the Wenchi Traditional Area, confirmed the arrest in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Wenchi.

He called on the police to expedite their investigations and prosecute the suspects, stating, “We also expect the police to ensure that the suspects reclaim the degraded land at the illegal mining site too.”
