Former Ghanaian international Samuel Osei Kuffour has expressed strong confidence in Vincent Kompany’s ability to guide Bayern Munich to UEFA Champions League success in the 2024/25 season.

Kuffour, who spent over a decade at Bayern and won the 2001 Champions League, believes Kompany’s tactical expertise and leadership will be crucial to the club’s European ambitions.

“I spoke to Vincent Kompany when I was in Munich, and he was so positive about the team. I went to the training ground, and I was impressed by his tactics and the way the team builds up. He motivates his players to bring the best out of them,” he told Flashscore.

Kompany’s appointment as Bayern’s head coach marks a historic moment as he becomes the club’s first black manager. Kuffour acknowledged the significance of this milestone, saying, “For Kompany to have that opportunity as the first black person to coach in the Bundesliga, and such a big team like Bayern Munich, is really great.”

Bayern have made a strong statement in this season’s Champions League, thrashing Bayer Leverkusen 5-0 on aggregate to secure a quarterfinal spot.

With the final set to take place at the Allianz Arena on May 31, Kuffour is optimistic about Bayern’s chances of lifting the trophy on home soil.

“The UCL final will be in Munich, and I’m very confident Bayern Munich will be there. I spoke to some of the fans in Germany, and they urged me to join the fan zone if Bayern gets to the final to cheer the players on. I wish they get to the final so I can support my team.”

Meanwhile, Bayern will now turn their focus to a tough quarterfinal clash against Inter Milan as they continue their pursuit of European glory.

Wolfsburg 2-3 Bayern Munich: Kompany off to winning start after late Gnabry strike https://www.adomonline.com/wolfsburg-2-3-bayern-munich-kompany-off-to-winning-start-after-late-gnabry-strike/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 16:28:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2438713 A late goal by Serge Gnabry secured Bayern Munich a hard-fought 3-2 victory at Wolfsburg on Sunday, giving Vincent Kompany a winning start in the Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg started brightly, but the visitors made the better chances in the first half, taking the lead after fine work by Sacha Boey down the right to set up Jamal Musiala for an easy tap-in.

However, Bayern were punished for a slow start after the break, as Boey brought down Tiago Tomas in the box, and Lovro Majer made no mistake from the spot.

Wolfsburg created all kinds of trouble for the visitors’ defence and Majer gave them the lead in the 55th minute, having also struck the post shortly before.

Thomas Muller became Bayern’s all-time record appearance-maker in the Bundesliga seconds before Jakub Kaminski’s own goal levelled the scores in the 65th minute.

But Gnabry struck with eight minutes left on the clock to secure all three points for the Bavarians.

Bayern ‘already feels like home’ – Kompany https://www.adomonline.com/bayern-already-feels-like-home-kompany/ Fri, 31 May 2024 06:58:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2402659 Vincent Kompany says Bayern Munich “already feels like home” after being unveiled as the manager of the German Bundesliga club.

Bayern confirmed Kompany, 38, had been handed a three-year deal on Wednesday, replacing Thomas Tuchel.

The Belgian suffered relegation from the Premier League with Burnley in 2023-24.

“My mentality is that I never haven’t ever worked for a top club in my head,” Kompany said.

“A top club is the environment you create. It’s the mentality you have towards your job in good and bad times, that’s what defines working at the top level.

“It already feels like home.”

Kompany began his managerial career with Anderlecht – the club where he also started his playing career.

He led them to the Belgian Cup final in 2021-22 before leaving at the end of that season to take the reins at Burnley.

After guiding the Clarets to the Championship title with 101 points and securing promotion to the Premier League in his first season, Kompany was unable to avoid an immediate return to the second tier as they finished 19th last term.

Bayern finished third in the Bundesliga last term, halting their run of 11 successive titles as they fell 18 points short of champions Bayer Leverkusen.

The Bavarian outfit ended a campaign without a trophy for the first time since 2011-12.

“I’m eternally motivated, I wake up from the morning to the evening motivated with the intention to make everyone around me better,” added Kompany.

“I’m not defined by the successful years in my life, it’s the moments I had tough times.

“I don’t want to be successful on my own I want to bring as many people with me, that’s in my nature.”

Bayern Munich appoint Vincent Kompany as new head coach https://www.adomonline.com/bayern-munich-appoint-vincent-kompany-as-new-head-coach/ Wed, 29 May 2024 12:22:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2401805 Bayern Munich have appointed Burnley boss Vincent Kompany as their new head coach on a three-year deal.

The 38-year-old replaces Thomas Tuchel after he departed at the end of the season, with Bayern agreeing a compensation fee of around £10.2m with Burnley to appoint Kompany.

The Belgian’s arrival comes despite him enduring a tough season at Turf Moor after the Clarets were relegated from the Premier League for an immediate return to the Championship.

But the ex-Manchester City captain has a knowledge of the Bundesliga having played at Hamburg, and is a fluent German speaker.

Bayern have brought in Kompany after a series of rejections in their search for Tuchel’s successor with Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso, Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann and Austria coach Ralf Rangnick all turning down the job.

Kompany, who began his managerial career at Anderlecht, departs Burnley after two seasons in charge, which included him guiding the club to the Championship title in 2023.

“Whilst we were initially confident in retaining our manager, the changing dynamics of the situation made this impossible.

“We understand the allure and prestige of a club like Bayern Munich and respect Vincent’s ambition to explore new opportunities.

“We wish only the best for Vincent and would like to put on record our appreciation for his dedication every single day he was a part of this football club. Our priority remains the stability and success of Burnley FC, and we will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure that our ambition is realised – namely our return to the Premier League.

“We have started the search for a new manager and will make an announcement in due course.”

A four-time Premier League winner as a player with Manchester City, Kompany will look to rediscover his winning touch at Bayern after the German giants suffered a first trophyless season in 12 years.

Bayern Munich agree deal in principle with Kompany https://www.adomonline.com/bayern-munich-agree-deal-in-principle-with-kompany/ Sat, 25 May 2024 16:00:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2399923 Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has agreed a deal in principle to become the new Bayern Munich coach.

The German club moved for Kompany after a series of rejections in their search for a successor to Thomas Tuchel.

It is understood Kompany has agreed a deal until 2027, with Bayern set to pay Burnley £10.2m in compensation.

Craig Bellamy, Kompany’s assistant at Burnley, will not accompany the Belgian to the Allianz Arena but Floribert Ngalula and Bram Geers will form part of his backroom staff.

Bayern had targeted Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, their former manager Julian Nagelsmann, who is currently at the helm of Germany, and Austria coach Ralf Rangnick following their decision to part with Tuchel, but the trio rejected the job.

Tuchel held talks with Bayern earlier in May about remaining at the club, but they ended without an agreement.

Bayern were keen to appoint a German-speaking coach and Kompany ticks that box, having played for Hamburg for two years during his playing career.

The 38-year-old has built a decent reputation as a manager during his time at Anderlecht and Burnley.

A four-time Premier League winner as a player with Manchester City, Kompany became Anderlecht head coach in 2020 following a spell as player-manager, before moving to Turf Moor.

The Belgian guided Burnley to the Championship title in 2023 but the Clarets were relegated from the Premier League this season.

Bayern in advanced talks with Burnley over Kompany https://www.adomonline.com/bayern-in-advanced-talks-with-burnley-over-kompany/ Thu, 23 May 2024 07:09:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2398773 Bayern Munich are in advanced talks with Burnley over the shock appointment of Vincent Kompany as their new coach.

The Bundesliga side believe Kompany wants to join them and the two clubs are aiming to agree on a compensation fee.

It is believed Kompany, 38, would take his Clarets backroom staff with him to Munich, including former Wales international Craig Bellamy.

Bayern have struggled to find a replacement for Thomas Tuchel, whose exit was confirmed last week after initially being announced in February.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, Germany chief Julian Nagelsmann and current Austria coach Ralf Rangnick have all turned down the job.

Talks about persuading Tuchel to stay on failed to reach a positive conclusion, leaving Bayern with a problem.

Kompany has built a decent reputation in his time at Anderlecht and Burnley, although the Clarets’ relegation following lofty pre-season expectations has not reflected well on the Belgian.

He speaks German, having played in the Bundesliga for Hamburg.

Kompany signed a five-year contract extension at Burnley in 2023 but refused to answer questions about his future after Sunday’s home defeat by Nottingham Forest.

Kompany, a four-time Premier League winner as a player with Manchester City, became Burnley manager in June 2022 in his first managerial role in England, having previously been in charge of Anderlecht.

Kompany and Bayern have had initial talks though it is not known how far they have progressed and how close the parties are to making a decision.

The Bundesliga giants have struggled to find a replacement for Thomas Tuchel, whose exit was confirmed last week after initially being announced in February.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann and Austria coach Ralf Rangnick have all turned the job down.

Talks aimed at persuading Tuchel to stay on failed to reach a positive conclusion, leaving Bayern with a problem.

Kompany has built a decent reputation during his time at Anderlecht and Burnley, although the Clarets’ relegation – following lofty pre-season expectations – has not reflected well on the Belgian.

However, he has knowledge of the Bundesliga from his time as a player at Hamburg and speaks German.

If Bayern were to make a formal approach, it is sure to be attractive to Kompany, who signed a five-year contract extension at Burnley in 2023 but refused to answer questions about his future after Sunday’s season-ending defeat by Nottingham Forest.

Bayern endured a trophyless campaign under Tuchel, finishing third in the league behind unbeaten champions Leverkusen and second-placed Stuttgart.

Vincent Kompany: Burnley boss signs five-year deal after winning Championship title https://www.adomonline.com/vincent-kompany-burnley-boss-signs-five-year-deal-after-winning-championship-title/ Mon, 08 May 2023 13:52:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2246778 Burnley boss Vincent Kompany has signed a new five-year contract to remain with the Championship title winners until the summer of 2028.

The 37-year-old led the Clarets back to the Premier League at his first attempt this season, having joined in 2022.

The club could become the first Championship side to break the 100-point mark since Leicester in 2013-14 when they face Cardiff on Monday.

“Burnley and Turf Moor felt right pretty much from the start,” he said.

“So it also feels right to sign for the next five years.

“Together with the fans, we have made Turf Moor a fortress again and continue to look forward to the future and the job of making Burnley better with every step.”

Kompany has transformed the fortunes of a club that was short of confidence, having been relegated from the Premier League last season.

They have lost on just three occasions in the league, just once at home, so far this term.

Such has been their dominance that, headed into the final game of the season on Monday, the Clarets command a 19-point gap on third-placed Luton Town.

It has led to Kompany being eyed by Premier League Chelsea as a potential new head coach, while he was also linked with the vacant Tottenham job.

“He is the perfect fit for how we all see Burnley Football Club moving forward,” club chairman Alan Pace said.

“An extraordinary leader, setting ever higher standards and driving our club to the levels we all want to achieve.”

Kompany’s new contract comes two days after Burnley had a transfer embargo lifted.

It was imposed after a late submission of their accounts because of a change of auditor.

Chelsea: Vincent Kompany and Mauricio Pochettino on Chelsea shortlist https://www.adomonline.com/chelsea-vincent-kompany-and-mauricio-pochettino-on-chelsea-shortlist/ Sun, 23 Apr 2023 06:46:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2242156 Vincent Kompany is one of the managers on Chelsea’s shortlist for their new permanent head coach.

Burnley manager Kompany, Mauricio Pochettino and one other unnamed manager are being considered by the Premier League club.

However, ex-Bayern Munich boss Julian Naglesmann is no longer in the running to take over at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley are leading the recruitment process.

The Blues sacked manager Graham Potter at the start of April after less than seven months in charge, following a 2-0 home defeat by Aston Villa that left the club 11th in the Premier League table.

Ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was then named interim manager until the end of the season.

Former Manchester City captain Kompany has this season led Burnley to promotion from the Championship in his first year in charge at Turf Moor.

The 37-year-old Belgian has transformed the team’s style resulting in attractive, attacking football which has been praised by supporters and those within the game.

It would be a significant jump for Kompany, who has only managed Anderlecht (2019-2022) before his appointment at Burnley.

Kompany’s impressive season has also led to him being linked with the vacant Tottenham job.

BBC Sport has approached Burnley for comment.

Chelsea had already held talks with German Nagelsmann, who was sacked by Bayern in March.

But there was scepticism from the club after they received mixed feedback on Naglesmann during the talks process.

Meanwhile, Pochettino has been without a job since being sacked by Paris St-Germain last summer.

The 51-year-old Argentine is best known for his work at Chelsea rivals Tottenham, where he managed for five years and reached the Champions League final in 2019.

BBC Sport understands there is currently no favoured choice at the club and the process is ongoing.

Former Spain and Barcelona manager Luis Enrique had been among the contenders but he has reportedly not made Chelsea’s shortlist after initial talks.

Chelsea, who are 11th in the Premier League and out of all other competitions, next play on Wednesday, when they welcome Brentford to Stamford Bridge (19:45 BST).

Former Man City captain Kompany named Burnley boss https://www.adomonline.com/former-man-city-captain-kompany-named-burnley-boss/ Tue, 14 Jun 2022 13:26:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2126180 Burnley have appointed former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany as manager.

The Belgian, 36, was in charge at Anderlecht for two years before leaving by mutual consent in May, having led them to third the Belgian top flight.

Burnley sacked Sean Dyche in April and replaced him with interim boss Mike Jackson, who was unable to prevent relegation from the Premier League.

“I’m excited by the challenge ahead,” Kompany said.

“Burnley Football Club is a truly historic English side and it is an honour to be appointed first-team manager.

“I’ve been impressed by the board’s vision for the club which aligns with my own and I look forward to playing my part as we enter an important season.”

Former Belgium defender Kompany spent 11 years at City, where he won 10 major trophies, including four Premier League titles.

His appointment comes amid Burnley’s financial troubles. They received a £65m loan with American finance company MSD Holdings, a “significant proportion” of which now has to be repaid after falling out of the top flight.

Burnley have not specified the length of Kompany’s contract.

The previous time the Clarets went down from the Premier League, in 2014-15, Dyche stayed in charge and led them to the Championship title the following season.

Kompany’s managerial history

Kompany returned to boyhood club Anderlecht as player-manager in 2019, his first coaching job.

However, he relinquished managerial duties after only four games to concentrate on playing, with the club having won only two points. They went on to finish eighth.

Kompany retired from playing and took over as manager in August 2020, after which Anderlecht won 41, lost 19 and drew 30 of his 90 games.

Anderlecht finished fourth in his first full season in charge and this season finished third, 11 points behind champions Club Bruges.

Anderlecht chief executive Peter Verbeke said Kompany was an “essential part” in rebuilding the club.

“He brought professionalism and expertise and has also been important in the development of young players,” Verbeke said.

Burnley chairman Alan Pace said: “Vincent is a proven leader and I’ve been very impressed with his ideas for Burnley Football Club, his appetite to succeed and his focus on leading the club back to the Premier League.

“Vincent has shown impressive credentials in leading one of Belgium’s biggest teams back to European football and a cup final last season and we’ve been excited by his philosophy, approach and ambition for the club.”
