The former Tottenham and Chelsea boss – who left the Blues by mutual consent at the end of last season – will lead USA into their home World Cup in 2026, when the tournament will be played across the States, Canada and Mexico.

This will be the first international role for Pochettino, 52, who has also managed Espanyol, Southampton and Paris Saint-Germain during his 15-year, distinguished coaching career.

Pochettino replaces Gregg Berhalter, who was dismissed after USA failed to qualify from their group at this summer’s Copa America.

“The decision to join U.S. Soccer wasn’t just about football for me; it’s about the journey that this team and this country are on,” Pochettino said.

“The energy, the passion, and the hunger to achieve something truly historic here – those are the things that inspired me. The opportunity to lead the U.S. Men’s National Team, in front of fans who are just as passionate as the players, is something I couldn’t pass up.

US threatens to restrict aid to Ghana over anti-LGBTQ+ bill https://www.adomonline.com/us-threatens-to-restrict-aid-to-ghana-over-anti-lgbtq-bill/ Sat, 02 Mar 2024 03:46:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2363951 The United States on Thursday cautioned that it might limit foreign aid to Ghana if President Nana Akufo-Addo signs a new bill criminalising LGBTQI+ activities into law.

Ghana’s Parliament on Wednesday approved legislation that could lead to prison sentences of up to three years for identifying as LGBTQ+ and five years for forming or supporting LGBTQI+ organizations.

US State Department spokesperson Matt Miller expressed concerns about the potential consequences of the bill, stating, “So we have made very clear what our opinion is on that law – you can look at my statement yesterday – and we have made that clear in private conversations with the Government of Ghana as well. I don’t think I should get any more specific than that, but if this bill becomes law, it would certainly have a chilling effect on foreign investment and tourism in Ghana”.

He added that the enactment of the bill could affect U.S. assistance to the country.

“You’ve seen that same chilling effect bear fruit in Uganda, which passed a very similar law in the past, and I can say that should the bill pass, it would potentially have ramifications on U.S. assistance in the country”.

While the bill awaits Akufo-Addo’s assent, he has indicated his willingness to approve it if it aligns with the wishes of the majority of Ghanaians.

The United States provided over $211 million in assistance to Ghana in fiscal year 2022, supporting various sectors including agriculture, malaria prevention, and AIDS combat efforts. The extent to which aid would be affected by the new law remains uncertain.

Although many African nations criminalize same-sex relationships, recent legislative efforts across the continent have sought to reinforce such laws.

Ghanaian parliamentarian Sam George, who sponsored the bill, celebrated its passage online, emphasizing the protection of national values.

However, the proposed legislation drew swift condemnation from the United States, echoing similar criticism directed at Uganda for its harsher anti-LGBTQ+ measures.

State Department spokesperson Matt Miller underscored Ghana’s tradition of tolerance and respect for human rights, expressing concern that the bill could undermine these values.

In Uganda, the law includes severe penalties such as the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” and life imprisonment for “homosexuality,” prompting the U.S. to restrict $20 million in aid to the country.

Amnesty International has urged President Akufo-Addo not to sign the bill, emphasizing the importance of respecting the human rights of all individuals.

Amnesty’s country director for Ghana, Genevieve Partington, condemned the legislation, citing reports of rights violations against LGBTQ+ individuals since the bill’s introduction in parliament.

US strikes Syria bases used by Iran-linked groups https://www.adomonline.com/us-strikes-syria-bases-used-by-iran-linked-groups/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 23:09:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2310828 The US has carried out air strikes against two weapons and ammunition storage facilities in eastern Syria used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said the strikes were in response to recent attacks on US bases in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups.

The US strikes were “separate and distinct from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas,” he said in a statement.

Iran did not immediately comment.

The strikes, carried out by a pair of F-16 US air force fighters, took place on Friday at around 04:30 local time (01:30 GMT) near Abu Kamal, a town on the border with Iraq.

It is not yet known if there were any casualties from the attacks.

“These precision self-defence strikes are a response to a series of ongoing and mostly unsuccessful attacks against US personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups that began on October 17,” Mr Austin said in a statement.

US and coalition troops have been attacked at least 12 times in Iraq and four times in Syria since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began.

A total of 21 US military personnel have suffered minor injuries, according to the Pentagon.

American officials attribute the attacks to Iranian proxy groups operating in the region. Iran backs both Hamas, which controls Gaza, and Hezbollah, which operates in Lebanon, with arms as well as money.

“These Iranian-backed attacks against US forces are unacceptable and must stop,” Mr Austin said.

“If attacks by Iran’s proxies against US forces continue, we will not hesitate to take further necessary measures to protect our people.”

The White House said on Thursday that President Joe Biden had warned Iran against targeting US personnel in the Middle East via a rare message to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameni.

At a UN General Assembly meeting in New York also on Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian warned that Washington would not be spared from the fire engulfing the region if the violence in Gaza continues.

The US has sent warships and fighter aircraft to the region in recent weeks. On Thursday, US officials said some 900 US troops were also being moved there.

The US is at great pains to emphasize that the overnight action in eastern Syria is not connected to what is going on in Gaza, that it was not done in any coordination with Israel, and that it is a completely separate action of self-defence.

It is trying to distance its action and tell Iran to back off.

Despite this, it will be seen as connected and part of US actions in the region that are seen as supportive of Israel.

Chinese garlic is a national security risk, says US senator https://www.adomonline.com/chinese-garlic-is-a-national-security-risk-says-us-senator/ Sat, 09 Dec 2023 19:03:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2330196 A US senator has called for a government investigation into the impact on national security of garlic imports from China.

Republican Senator Rick Scott has written to the commerce secretary, claiming Chinese garlic is unsafe, citing unsanitary production methods.

China is the world’s biggest exporter of fresh and chilled garlic and the US is a major consumer.

But the trade has been controversial for many years.

The US has accused China of “dumping” garlic on to the market at below-cost price.

Since the mid-1990s it has levied heavy tariffs or taxes on Chinese imports in order to prevent US producers from being priced out of the market.

In 2019, during the Trump administration, these tariffs were increased.

In his letter Senator Scott refers to these existing concerns. But he goes on to highlight “a severe public health concern over the quality and safety of garlic grown in foreign countries – most notably, garlic grown in Communist China”.

He refers to practices which, he says, have been “well documented” in online videos, cooking blogs and documentaries, including growing garlic in sewage.

He has called for the Department of Commerce to take action, under a law which allows investigations into the impact of specific imports on the security of the US.

Senator Scott also goes into much detail about the different types of garlic that should be looked into: “All grades of garlic, whole or separated into cloves, whether or not peeled, chilled, fresh, frozen, provisionally preserved or packed in water or other neutral substance.”

He argues: “Food safety and security is an existential emergency that poses grave threats to our national security, public health, and economic prosperity.”

The Office for Science and Society at McGill University in Quebec, which attempts to popularise and explain scientific issues, says there is “no evidence” that sewage is used as a fertiliser for growing garlic in China.

“In any case, there is no problem with this,” an article published by the university in 2017 says.

“Human waste is as effective a fertilizer as is animal waste. Spreading human sewage on fields that grow crops doesn’t sound appealing, but it is safer than you might think.”

EPA proposes requirement to remove lead pipes from US water systems within 10 years https://www.adomonline.com/epa-proposes-requirement-to-remove-lead-pipes-from-us-water-systems-within-10-years/ Sat, 02 Dec 2023 08:27:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2326988 The US Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) is proposing a rule that would require water systems across the country to replace millions of lead service lines within 10 years.

The rule would accelerate progress toward the Biden administration goal of removing 100% of lead pipes; lead exposure is linked to significant health and developmental problems, especially for children.

The EPA proposal said lines must be replaced within 10 years, regardless of the lead levels in tap or other drinking water samples.

Additional time could be allowed “in limited circumstances” for some systems that need complete system-wide line replacements, the proposal said.

The Safe Drinking Water Act authorizes EPA to establish regulations for public water systems, and the Lead and Copper Rule was established in 1991 to reduce exposure to lead in drinking water. It was revised in 2021, generally with more detailed and stringent requirements.

The new proposed rule would further strengthen the ways the rule targets lead in drinking water by improving how water systems are tested for lead levels and lowering lead action level, or the threshold that requires additional compliance activities.

Water systems would also have to show consistent progress toward replacing lead pipes, with a minimum of 10% of lead pipes replaced each year and minimal exceptions.

The EPA can enforce regulations under the Safe Drinking Water Act with civil penalties or fines.

“We cannot survive without water. Yet for millions of homes, for millions of children, their water has been delivered by a poisonous straw,” Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, a pediatrician and clean water advocate, said during a briefing hosted by the EPA.

Experts agree that no amount of lead exposure is safe. Excessive exposure can put adults at higher risk for cancer, stroke, kidney disease and other poor health outcomes. It’s particularly harmful for children; even low levels of lead can negatively affect a child’s growth and development, and childhood exposure can lead to long-term harm, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We can’t see lead in water; we can’t taste it; we can’t smell it. But it has silently and innocuously diminished the promise of generations of our children,” said Hanna-Attisha, who worked in Flint, Michigan, during the city’s water crisis. “This proposed rule, these improvements, ensure that in a not-too-distant future, there will never be another city and another child poisoned by their pipes.”

New lead pipes have been banned in the US since the 1980s, but there are still 9.2 million lead service lines in the US, according to estimates from the EPA. The two states with the highest proportions of service lines requiring replacement are Illinois and Rhode Island, where a quarter or more of service lines need to be replaced. In New Jersey, an estimated 14% of lines need to be replaced and in Michigan, 11%. The national average is about 8%, according to the EPA.

A 2021 analysis by an environmental nonprofit found that more than half of the population drank from water systems that had detected lead levels exceeding those recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

“This a public health concern that has, unfortunately, spanned generations and an issue that has disproportionately impacted low-income and minority communities,” EPA Administrator Michael Regan said at the briefing. “Everyone in this country should be able to turn on their tap for a glass of water and know that it’s safe to drink.”

Compliance with the proposed rule is estimated to cost billions of dollars, but a cost-benefit analysis presented with the proposal suggests that the benefits would be four to 10 times greater. And the benefits are largely centered around public health prevention, Regan said: protecting against IQ loss among children, preventable death and disease and more.

“Those benefits are truly priceless,” he said.

The Biden administration has dedicated $15 billion to removing lead service lines through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and there is an additional $11.7 billion in general funding available through the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund that can be utilized for these types of projects.

“The bottom line is, lead poisoning is preventable,” Brenda Mallory, chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, said at the briefing. “This is a problem we can and will solve to save more children and families from facing it.”

The EPA will collect public comments on the proposed rule for 60 days and hold a public hearing in mid-January.

2023 WWC: Horan denies Netherlands famous World Cup win https://www.adomonline.com/2023-wwc-horan-denies-netherlands-famous-world-cup-win/ Thu, 27 Jul 2023 10:15:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2277473 Captain Lindsey Horan came to the rescue of defending champions the United States after the Netherlands had threatened an upset at the Women’s World Cup.

New Manchester City signing Jill Roord put the Dutch on course for a famous win after a clinical finish from the edge of the box.

The Stars and Stripes have been a superpower on the world stage, winning their previous 13 matches spanning three tournaments, but they struggled to break down a resolute Netherlands defence until Horan equalised with a header from a corner.

In a repeat of the 2019 final – which the USA won 2-0 in Lyon – Savannah DeMelo fired wide when the game was goalless while Trinity Rodman forced Daphne van Domselaar into a fingertip save moments after the Dutch had taken the lead.

It looked like being a bitterly frustrating day for the USA when Julie Ertz had a header deflected behind before Horan equalised.

The United States stay top of Group E with four points from two games – the same number as the Netherlands who trail on goal difference.

“We performed brilliantly and at times it was really fantastic,” said Netherlands coach Andries Jonker. “You have to be happy with 1-1.

“These games are battles from the first second to the last. The only thing you can say is that women’s football has evolved incredibly.

“We’re there, along with the US, and I’m very satisfied with that.”

The USA face Portugal next at Eden Park, Auckland, on Tuesday (08:00 BST) while the Netherlands play Vietnam in Dunedin at the same time.

Portugal and Vietnam, who are both yet to record a point, play their second group game in Hamilton on Thursday (08:30 BST).

US returns 23 looted artefacts to Nigeria https://www.adomonline.com/us-returns-23-looted-artefacts-to-nigeria/ Wed, 12 Oct 2022 15:38:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2170833 The United States has returned 23 pieces of looted artefacts to Nigeria.

The Benin Bronzes were handed over to a Nigerian delegation at a ceremony on Tuesday in Washington.

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed, who received the artefacts, hailed the US and its institutions for the repatriation of the “highly-cherished” cultural artworks.

“These artefacts are intrinsic to the culture that produced them. A people ought not be denied the works of their forebears. It is in the light of this that we are delighted with today’s repatriation,” he said.

The information ministry said the returned artefacts “comprise 21 from the Smithsonian and one each from the National Gallery of Arts and the Rhode Island School of Design”.

The repatriation is part of a bilateral cultural property agreement to prevent illegal import into the US of some categories of Nigerian artefacts.

Lonnie G. Bunch III, the secretary of the Smithsonian, said the institution was “humbled and honoured to play a small role in transferring ownership of the art works to Nigeria”, based on ethical consideration.

The items were part of thousands of artworks known as the Benin Bronzes stolen from the Benin Kingdom in present-day Nigeria by British colonialists in 1897.

The items were then distributed to various museums and institutions across Europe and the US.

Nigeria is set to receive more of such artefacts from The Netherlands, the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, Mexico, the University of Cambridge in the UK and Germany.

The West African country says it will soon launch an international traveling exhibition with the artefacts ”in a manner that will win more friends and promote greater goodwill for Nigeria and the ethnic groups that produced [them]”.

Trump granted special master in documents case https://www.adomonline.com/trump-granted-special-master-in-documents-case/ Tue, 06 Sep 2022 15:04:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2159470 A judge has granted Donald Trump’s demand for a “special master” to oversee the case into his handling of classified materials.

Mr Trump is being investigated for allegedly taking documents with him when he left the White House.

But the “special master” is an independent lawyer who decides if any of the records are covered by attorney-client or executive privilege.

The move is seen as a blow to prosecutors and a win for Mr Trump.

The former president had asked for the special master to be appointed, while prosecutors had strongly opposed it – and the appointment is likely to slow down the justice department’s ongoing criminal investigation.

That is because the judge has banned the government from reviewing or using the seized materials for its investigation until the special master’s independent review has been completed.

READ MORE:

Department of Justice officials previously said that documents stored at former President Donald Trump’s Florida home were likely to have been concealed as part of an effort to obstruct an FBI investigation.

The authorities say these documents should have been handed over to the National Archives – which US presidents are legally obliged to do upon leaving office.

Mr Trump, meanwhile, denies any kind of wrongdoing, arguing that as president he had declassified all the documents, and that they were kept securely at his Mar-a-Lago home.

The Department of Justice resisted Mr Trump’s request saying that any presidential records seized in the FBI’s 8 August search of Mar-A-Lago “belong to the United States, not to the former president”.

It is not clear how long the special master’s review will take.

Mr Trump’s lawyers have argued some of the documents are covered by attorney-client privilege – a part of US law that allows people to keep conversations with their lawyers private.

His legal team have also claimed “executive privilege” over the documents, which allows presidents to keep certain communications under wraps.

However, some legal experts argue that these moves are merely a tactic to delay proceedings – since the documents have already been looked at.

Before the decision was handed down, law professor and US constitutional law expert Aziz Huq told the BBC the demand for a special master was simply “throwing sand in the gears”.

“It’s unclear why a special master is required. A special master is usually used before the government sees the underlying material, and here the government has seen them,” the former law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said.

Former federal prosecutor and former deputy attorney general for New York, E Danya Perry, said: “What really strikes me here is it’s too late… you can’t unscramble the egg or put the genie back in the bottle. These documents have been reviewed.”

You destroyed so many lives – Survivors to R. Kelly https://www.adomonline.com/you-destroyed-so-many-lives-survivors-to-r-kelly/ Thu, 30 Jun 2022 16:37:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2132807 Some of the women who were abused by singer R. Kelly described how he had “destroyed so many people’s lives” as they addressed him in court before he was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Wednesday.

“You made me do things that broke my spirit. I literally wished I would die because of how low you made me feel,” one survivor told the disgraced star in the New York hearing. “Do you remember that?”

Another sobbed as she told the court that Kelly victimised her after she attended one of his concerts at the age of 17.

“I was afraid, naïve and didn’t know to handle the situation,” she said, explaining why she didn’t speak up at the time. “Silence is a very lonely place.”

The singer, who was previously best known for chart-topping songs like Ignition (Remix) and I Believe I Can Fly, heard seven impact statements from his victims in court shortly before he was jailed for racketeering and sex trafficking crimes.

Some women used their real names, while others were only known by their first name or a pseudonym, and several became emotional as they spoke.

READ ALSO:

Lizzette Martinez described how Kelly had promised to be a mentor when she was pursuing a singing career at 17.

“I am now 45, a mother, and I struggle with mental health,” she told the court. “Robert, you destroyed so many people’s lives.”

Speaking after the sentencing, she told the BBC: “I was a very young girl, under-age girl, who had a lot of dreams and he cut my dreams short and abused me mentally, physically, emotionally, any way that you can imagine.

“I just wanted to just live a normal life and just kind of try to heal, but it could take me a lifetime to heal. Just because he’s sentenced doesn’t mean it goes away for us.”

Prior to the sentencing, a lawyer for Kelly blamed the singer’s “hypersexual” behaviour on being repeatedly sexually abused himself as a child.

But Ms Martinez said: “There are so many people that are abused in this world and we don’t turn around and abuse others. He had all the resources. We don’t have resources like that. He could have gotten help. So many things he could have done to stop himself. It’s the power of celebrity.”

Another survivor, Stephanie, said Kelly had left a “permanent stain” on her life. “I felt special, because someone who was special to the world was interested in me,” she said.

“I hope you go to jail for the rest of your life.”

One woman, Addie, recalled meeting the singer at a concert where he sexually assaulted her. “I never knew that going to that concert in September of 1994 was going to change me for ever,” she said.

“These last four years have been a rude awakening of how my silence has hurt others. I hope Robert Kelly cannot sleep at night, knowing this is what he’s done.”

Angela (a pseudonym) detailed the singer’s “deplorable and inexplicable” behaviour.

She referred to the fact that Kelly was known as the self-styled “pied piper of R&B” – a title which she said applied “both in music and in technique and in approach”.

“Success and love… you presented these glittering gems as if they were gold,” she told him. “You used your fame and power to groom and coach under-age boys and girls for your own sexual gratification.”

She continued: “With every addition of a new victim you grew in wickedness, cockiness, diminishing any form of humanity or self-awareness, which soon became the breeding ground for your God-like complex.

“You were doing, saying and encouraging despicable things that no-one should be doing. We reclaim our names from beneath the shadows of your afflicted trauma.”

At one point, a woman known as Jane Doe number two told the singer: “You are an abuser, you are shameless, you are disgusting.”

Several women testified that they were at the mercy of Kelly’s perverse and sadistic whims while they were under the legal age of consent.

They said they were ordered to sign non-disclosure agreements, which prevented them from going public with their experiences.

Some also referred to “Rob’s rules” – which, if broken, saw them subjected to threats and violent punishments.

As Kelly was sentenced, Kitti Jones said “many of us have been waiting for this day to come”, while Faith added: “I hope you get some help, as well as ask God for forgiveness.”

Another survivor, Sonja, told the court: “There were numerous times I was scared for my life, scared for my daughter’s life. I hope and I pray to God that we can all heal.”

Jovante Cunningham, a former backing singer for Kelly, said: “We are starting to see justice and we still have more litigation to go.”

Ms Cunningham took part in the docuseries Surviving R. Kelly, where she talked about witnessing the adult singer having sex with Aaliyah when the late R&B star was under age.

Referring to his sentencing, Ms Cunningham said: “You know, the Bible says that what you do in secret, God will reward you openly. He did all of this in secret, so now he gets rewarded openly.”
