This road, serving as a crucial thoroughfare, connects various neighborhoods in Accra to different locations. However, its deteriorating condition has raised concerns for both commuters and authorities.

In response to numerous complaints and a notable increase in accidents resulting from the road’s poor state, the National Security Ministry’s Human Security Department has initiated a comprehensive rehabilitation project.

The goal is not only to repair existing potholes but also to undertake crucial infrastructure improvements, ensuring the safe and easy navigation of the road for all motorists.

Rehabilitation work commenced on Thursday, January 25, as part of a concerted effort by the Human Security Department to prioritize the well-being and safety of the public.

The project is expected to be completed within ten working days, demonstrating the department’s commitment to expedite the process and minimize disruptions for commuters and residents.

This initiative is integral to the department’s broader strategy, emphasizing the tackling of fundamental community needs and concerns by focusing on enhancing vital infrastructure for everyday life.

The National Security team affirmed that this proactive approach aims not only to alleviate immediate challenges faced by motorists but also to contribute to the overall improvement of transportation infrastructure, enhancing the quality of life for residents and commuters alike.

They emphasised that the rehabilitation of the Spintex Road would effectively “resolve the road challenges faced by motorists who use the stretch.”

One shot dead as irate youth clash with police at Kotobabi [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/one-shot-dead-as-irate-youth-clash-with-police-at-kotobabi-video/ Thu, 02 Dec 2021 18:05:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2053196

One person has reportedly been shot dead with another in critical condition after a group of irate youth clashed with the police at the Kotobabi market near Spintex.

The incident occurred on Wednesday after the security personnel stormed the area to enforce a reclamation exercise by the Tema West Municipal Assembly.

However, squatters in the area resisted, creating a chaotic scene.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Anna Adukwei Addo, explained the group, numbering over 70, attacked the team while all attempts to maintain order proved futile.

A reinforcement team is said to have been called in to augment the efforts of the police as tempers were still high.

Meanwhile, some persons suspected to have been part of the attack have been arrested pending further action.

This comes on the back of a similar exercise in November.

Spintex Road slum demolished https://www.adomonline.com/spintex-road-slum-demolished/ Tue, 16 Nov 2021 16:39:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2044691 A slum community located in a prime area along the Spintex Road in Accra has been pulled down in a landmark demolition exercise carried out by the Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA).

Officials said the area was notorious for child prostitution and drug peddling, among other nefarious activities.

The exercise followed what the assembly said were the health hazards the squatters and residents of the area were exposed to during a recent fire outbreak in the slum, which destroyed some of the makeshift homes.

Located at the Kotobabi Junction, some 30 metres from the Ecobank Junction, the slum had for years been seen as a hub of the operations of alleged drug peddlers and syndicates of prostitution gangs and armed robbery.

The vibrancy of the slum saw rapid development of a business enclave that hosted night clubs, food joints, drinking bars, clothing and hairdressing salons, pharmacies, among others, over the last decade which had impacted the regular vehicular traffic along the stretch.

Attempts by the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, which previously had jurisdiction over the area, and later the TWMA, were halted over reasons said to be humanitarian.

Victims

Some victims who spoke to the Daily Graphic lamented the manner the exercise was conducted last Thursday, saying they had no prior notice from the assembly.

A food vendor, Gloria Narteki, said she had barely started work about 9:40 a.m. when a heavy police deployment accompanied by bulldozers razed the area, pulling down every structure in sight, including her food joint.

“We don’t know the rationale behind the demolition apart from rumours we heard over the weeks that a popular church located along the stretch and an iron rod dealership company, which also has an apartment building on the stretch, had purchased the land,” Ms Narteki said.

She said she was saddened by the development because some of the residents were making a genuine living there and were not into any form of nefarious activity.

Some others affected by the demolition exercise were seen scavenging for their belongings from the debris.

Debunk allegations

The Chief Executive of the assembly, Ms Anna Adukwei Addo, told the Daily Graphic that the assembly took advantage of the fire outbreak incident to clear the area since it has had difficulties doing so in the past.

She debunked suggestions that the assembly failed to give ample notice to the squatters prior to the exercise.

She said the assembly would want to engage the Nungua Traditional Council, the custodians of the land, so they could find an alternative use for the land.

“My understanding is that it was earmarked for a market but with an already existing market at Batsoona, we will have to analyse and see what alternative arrangements could be done apart from a market,” Ms Addo said.

She said the assembly was seeking to arrange for vocational training for many of the young girls who were within the settlement and had no skill set and were thus being forced into alleged nefarious activities.

“We are trying to identify them through a registration process so we can begin some form of counselling for them while we arrange the skills training programme for them to enable them to earn incomes on their own,” Ms Addo said.

The construction has affected some sections of the road, leaving a narrow passage for road users.

The outfit in a public notice has since advised motorists using the affected roads to exercise patience and follow the directions of the personnel deployed to control the traffic.

Meanwhile, the Police are engaging the Department of Urban Roads and the contractor concerned to help manage the situation, including they considering the possibility of working in the night for early completion.

Members of the public may explore alternative routes where possible.
