The 24-year-old Brazilian signed for United from Ajax in August 2022 for £81.3m – the second most expensive player in the club’s history behind Paul Pogba.

He has scored 12 goals in 96 appearances for United but has only scored once in the Premier League since April 2023.

United sources say the deal is covering a minimum of 84% of Antony’s salary, which is over £100,000 per week.

He remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2027.

“Everybody at United would like to wish Antony the best of luck for his spell in Seville,” said the Old Trafford club.

Antony started brightly under former United manager Erik ten Hag – also his previous boss at Ajax – by scoring three goals in his opening three league games.

However, after failing to live up to his transfer fee, Antony has struggled for first-team opportunities and this season has featured in just 13 of United’s 33 games in all competitions.

Mbappe scores first two La Liga goals in Real Madrid win https://www.adomonline.com/mbappe-scores-first-two-la-liga-goals-in-real-madrid-win/ Sun, 01 Sep 2024 11:39:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2442308 Kylian Mbappe scored his first two La Liga goals as Real Madrid beat Real Betis.

The France forward ran on to Federico Valverde’s backheel before slotting the opener past Rui Silva.

He then sent Silva the wrong way with a penalty after the goalkeeper had brought down Vinicius Jr.

Mbappe had failed to score in his previous three La Liga fixtures, having netted on his debut for the club in the Uefa Super Cup against Atalanta.

The 25-year-old was a summer signing from Paris St-Germain, where he remains the all-time top scorer with 256 goals.

His first goal came from his 25th shot of the La Liga season – with the penalty coming from his 26th. That is more shots than anybody else in Europe’s top five leagues.

Real Betis had chances to score earlier on with Abde Ezzalzouli heading wide from close range and Barcelona loanee Vitor Roque forcing a save with his first touch from the bench.

Spanish champions Madrid had plenty of chances too though, with Mbappe failing with seven shots before his goal and Eder Militao and Valverde testing the goalkeeper.

Vinicius also hit the post with a deflected shot.

Madrid are unbeaten after four league games, although four points behind Barcelona. Betis have only picked up one point from their opening three matches.

Diallo stars in Man Utd friendly win over Betis https://www.adomonline.com/diallo-stars-in-man-utd-friendly-win-over-betis/ Thu, 01 Aug 2024 12:42:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2428407 Manchester United wide-man Amad Diallo was the star of the show as Erik ten Hag’s side recorded a 3-2 pre-season victory over Real Betis in the Snapdragon Stadium for their first win of their US tour.

Diallo scored himself after winning Marcus Rashford’s penalty, and Casemiro’s first-time effort gave United the win with a dominant first-half performance.

But while Diallo commanded most attention in San Diego, United manager Ten Hag was left with more injury headaches with the news that Leny Yoro will miss three months with a foot injury and Rasmus Hojlund six weeks with a hamstring strain.

And forwards Antony and Rashford came off in the second half, with Antony visibly frustrated.

Diallo shines as chief creator

On Tuesday Diallo spoke of his desire to remain with United “for life”.

He also said he met fellow Ivorian Yaya Toure on holiday in the Maldives, where the former Barcelona and Manchester City star offered some advice for the season that lies ahead.

There was certainly a purpose about Diallo at the Snapdragon Stadium.

The 22-year-old was clean though twice but on the first occasion opted to nudge the ball on to Jadon Sancho, who was offside, while Scott McTominay burst on to the loose ball on the second occasion, only to go down under the tackle that followed and not be rewarded with a free-kick.

It was Diallo’s purposeful burst almost immediately after Iker Losada had prodded Betis in front that did bring the penalty that allowed Rashford to level.

Diallo is clearly full of confidence and his goal showed it as Harry Amass’ left-wing cross bounced perfectly for the powerful drive into the bottom corner that followed.

Diallo had a couple of forceful runs in the second half before he was replaced, with a few others, after an hour.

Manager Erik ten Hag challenged Diallo at the start of this trip, declaring “this has to be his year”.

Diallo seems to agree.

“He was dynamite,” said United goalkeeper Tom Heaton about Diallo.

“Since I have been here his ability has been incredible. Now you see more confidence and more belief and he is getting more game time, then you can see his game coming together.”

New Rashford injury worry

Under the circumstances, Ten Hag could do without suffering any more injuries before the season starts and United did not seem impressed at what they perceived was a soft refereeing performance from Alexis da Silva, an MLS regular.

Rashford was on the wrong end of a couple of tough challenges. He needed treatment after the second, when Da Silva appeared not to notice the England forward getting caught on the ankle inside the box, and eventually went off.

Rashford was not moving freely but it was not clear whether the substitution was pre-planned as, within a couple of minutes, United made half a dozen.

Antony only lasted 23 minutes of the second half before he was forced off. The Brazilian indicated to reporters afterwards he had hurt his hand.

It was a special night for Heaton.

The 38-year-old has not played a competitive game since February 2023 and told BBC Sport last week of his hope he would get more opportunities this season.

Although he admitted responsibility for Real Betis’ opening goal, he still enjoyed playing in front of a crowd of over 20,000.

“Yes is the honest answer,” he said, when asked if it felt good to play. “It was fantastic to be out there. The feeling you get when you play is incredible. I love it.

“Other than bounce (practice) games it has been a while since I had a proper 90 minutes. It felt quick at times but I built into the game.”

Szoboszlai goal gives Slot first win as Liverpool boss https://www.adomonline.com/szoboszlai-goal-gives-slot-first-win-as-liverpool-boss/ Sat, 27 Jul 2024 11:54:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2426561 Arne Slot earned his first win as Liverpool manager with a 1-0 victory over Real Betis courtesy of an excellent Dominik Szoboszlai finish in Pittsburgh.

The Reds were beaten 1-0 by Preston in a behind-closed-doors friendly at their training ground earlier this month but the post-Jurgen Klopp era is now up and running with their first win on their US tour.

Hungarian midfielder Szoboszlai opened the scoring after 34 minutes by sweeping in Mohamed Salah’s through ball, while Betis striker Juanmi missed two chances in front of 42,679 fans.

Liverpool lost midfielder Curtis Jones on the half-hour mark with Slot saying it was too early to say how bad the injury was.

The Reds face Arsenal in Philadelphia on Thursday and then take on Manchester United in Columbia on Sunday, 4 August.

How did Liverpool play?

Slot has taken over from Klopp, who was in charge for nine years, and the German’s often dubbed ‘heavy metal football’ looked a little more soft rock under their new Dutch manager.

The changes in the style of play came in a fluid 4-2-4 formation and the Reds played without a striker.

Again, it was partly down to the limited personnel, but Klopp’s gegenpressing style turned into a slower possession-based approach, typically favoured by Johan Cruyff-influenced Dutch coaches.

Slot delivered his instructions at the Pittsburgh Steelers’s half-full Acrisure Stadium while constantly stood in the technical area and moved players into position with hand gestures and measured shouts.

Harvey Elliot and Szoboszlai took turns playing in the attacking midfielder number 10 role, so Liverpool were effectively without a striker for the majority of the game.

“I think during the season you will see us playing with a real striker but at this moment we have no-one with Darwin [Nunez] unavailable,” Slot said.

“We played with two number 10s and put them in the position they will play during the season. That was maybe out of necessity.

“But for the rest of the style of play, we tried to build from the back, that is our style to control the game, not concede constant counterattacks.

“That will hopefully be our style during the season and there were also many things we can improve but that’s normal after two weeks.”

It looked similar to the unenforced but successful tactical approach taken by Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag in the FA Cup final, with Bruno Fernandes up front in the win against Manchester City.

For Liverpool, it worked well given they had so few senior players. They dominated early on with shots from Fabio Carvalho, Salah and Wataru Endo, albeit from difficult positions. Elliot then scuffed the first real chance from a good Conor Bradley cutback, before Szoboszlai’s goal.

The second half was more of a non-event for the spectators as a host of youngsters disrupted the rhythm. Nabil Fekir hit the side netting from a good free-kick position and Carvalho had a shot saved by former Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian before coming off.

But it was an important exercise in fitness building, and introducing Slot’s style to his players, the supporters and football world before the new Premier League season starts.

Who stood out?

Defender Bradley was the pick of the starters, linking well with Salah on the right flank and created the majority of the best chances.

Meanwhile, Carvalho, fresh from a loan spell at Hull City, looked determined to impress with a number of dangerous moments.

There was ultimately a total change in line up as youthful substitutes Trey Nyoni, Vítezslav Jaros, Tyler Morton, Harvey Blair, Ben Doak, Luke Chambers, Nat Phillips, Luca Stephenson, Owen Beck, Stefan Bajetic, Kaide Gordon and Lewis Koumas all came on in the second half.

Nyoni, 17, excelled as the first of the youngsters coming on for an injured Curtis Jones. He dictated the play in the middle of the pitch and also created a big chance for Blair.

The youthful squad was down to Liverpool’s policy to give their players from Euro 2024 and Copa America their full recommended three-week holiday, as dictated by players’ union FIFPro when many rivals cut them short.

Ibrahim Konate and Diogo Jota will return early, however, having had minimal involvement for their national teams.

Jones injured?

The midfielder highlighted just how much he is enjoying Slot’s approach before kick-off but he came off injured in the 28th minute and went straight down the tunnel.

After the match, Slot played down concerns about Jones’ fitness saying: “I think it’s too early to tell [how bad it is]. He maybe could have played on, but I think maybe you could see he was not at 100%.”

Ferran Torres hat-trick helps Barcelona see off spirited Real Betis https://www.adomonline.com/ferran-torres-hat-trick-helps-barcelona-see-off-spirited-real-betis/ Sun, 21 Jan 2024 20:04:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2344641 Ferran Torres netted a hat-trick as Barcelona survived a scare away at Real Betis to claim a 4-2 win in LaLiga.

Torres scored twice early on before Xavi’s side were stunned in the second half by Isco’s brace.

Joao Felix, who came off the bench, was set up by Torres to score before the potent winger finished once more to keep Barca within seven points of leaders Real Madrid.

Betis started brightly and should have scored after four minutes.

The creative Isco gained possession after a flick-on and the experienced 31-year-old coolly lifted the ball over the Barca defence and into the path of Luiz Henrique, who shot over for a goal kick.

The visitors responded and also went close in the 14th minute.

Frenkie De Jong instinctively found midfield partner Pedri, who made a dangerous run in behind but, typically for the match to that point, the Spaniard struggled to compose himself and his effort looped over the bar.

But after 21 minutes Barca made it 1-0. Pedri evaded his marker to find space in behind and cut the ball back to find Torres, who tapped into the open net to give his side the lead.

Lamine Yamal was pulling the strings for Barca. Minutes after his curled effort rattled the post, the 16-year-old used his footwork to spin a defender and play in Robert Lewandowski. Although the striker was offside, the pass highlighted Barca’s first-half dominance.

The visitors doubled their lead on 48 minutes. Yamal wreaked havoc down the right, beating his man before his cross struck the upright and fell nicely to the feet of Torres who tapped home from close range again to strengthen Barca’s advantage to 2-0.

The hosts need a response and Isco provided it in style with a quickfire double.

After 56 minutes Inaki Pena punched the ball into the danger zone where Isco sweetly struck a half-volley into the back of the net.

And the former Real Madrid man stunned his former rivals when he scored again just three minutes later.

Henrique picked up a smart position on the right and tested the unsteady Pena with a cross. The keeper failed to react and Isco capitalised by looping the ball into the open net to level the score at 2-2.

Felix was sent on and the Portugal international had an immediate impact when he combined with Torres before producing an expert outside-of-the-boot finish in the 90th minute to separate the sides at 3-2.

And in stoppage time Torres completed his hat-trick with a deft chip over the keeper to round off the victory.

Jude Bellingham on target again but Real Madrid held by Real Betis https://www.adomonline.com/jude-bellingham-on-target-again-but-real-madrid-held-by-real-betis/ Sat, 09 Dec 2023 18:14:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2330211 Real Madrid were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at Real Betis despite another goal from Jude Bellingham.

The England midfielder netted in the 52nd minute of a thrilling LaLiga contest at the Benito Villamarin Stadium but it was not enough for victory as Aitor Ruibal hit back.

The result took Madrid a point clear at the top of the table but Girona and Barcelona – second and third respectively – will have a chance to take advantage when they face each other on Sunday.

Bellingham’s goal was his 16th for the club and continued his extraordinary start to life in Madrid since his summer move from Borussia Dortmund.

Yet he did not have things all his own way in what was an open and entertaining encounter.

Betis had the first opportunity when Marc Roca tested Andriy Lunin but Madrid also went close as Luka Modric flicked a header wide.

Rodrygo suffered double frustration as he was denied a penalty after going down in the area and then thwarted by an offside flag after teeing up Brahim Diaz to score.

Betis enjoyed a good spell and Ayoze Perez forced a fine reaction save from Lunin with a powerful shot before Willian Jose sent a ferocious strike narrowly wide.

Modric attempted to score from distance on a quick Madrid counter-attack but Rui Silva got back to save. David Alaba was also just wide with a strongly-hit free-kick on the stroke of half-time.

Betis threatened early in the second half when Perez released Isco but Lunin forced him away from goal.

Bellingham opened the scoring after brilliantly exchanging passes with Diaz and then running through to slide the ball beneath Silva.

Diaz had a chance to double the lead but shot wide from a tight angle and Betis responded as Ruibal took the ball from Jose on the right and lashed a thunderous strike into the far corner.

Both sides had good opportunities to win the game, with Silva first making a decent save from a Toni Kroos free-kick.

Isco went even closer for Betis in the final minute when he got his head to a cross into the box but his effort thumped against the post.

Madrid had one last chance in stoppage time as Rodrygo fed Joselu but his shot flew narrowly wide.

La Liga: Barcelona crush Real Betis to go top https://www.adomonline.com/la-liga-barcelona-crush-real-betis-to-go-top/ Sun, 17 Sep 2023 17:38:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2295058 Barcelona thumped Real Betis to go top of La Liga and extend their unbeaten run to five matches.

Portugal forward Joao Felix, who is loan from Atletico Madrid, scored his first Barcelona goal in an impressive display at the Nou Camp.

Robert Lewandowski, Ferran Torres, Raphinha and Joao Cancelo were also on target for the champions.

Barcelona are a point ahead of Real Madrid, who host Real Sociedad on Sunday.

Barcelona had 66% of possession and created passing intricate moves to break down a Betis side whose best chance came when William Jose was denied from close range by goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

Betis, who travel to Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday, are ninth in the table.

Yamal makes history as Barcelona thrash Real Betis https://www.adomonline.com/yamal-makes-history-as-barcelona-thrash-real-betis/ Sun, 30 Apr 2023 12:21:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2244392 Fifteen-year-old winger Lamine Yamal became Barcelona’s youngest-ever player as they beat 10-man Real Betis to move 11 points clear at the top of La Liga.

The academy product, who turns 16 in July, was brought on in the 84th minute to replace Gavi.

At 15 years and 290 days, Yamal is the fifth-youngest player to appear in the competition.

Goals from Andreas Christensen, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and a Guido Rodríguez own goal secured the win.

Mallorca youngster Luka Romero is the youngest player to feature in La Liga when he came on against Real Madrid in 2020, aged 15 years and 219 days.

Yamal, who Barca boss Xavi Hernandez called “fearless”, was included him in the squad for the first time against Atletico Madrid last Sunday.

Betis winger Joaquin, 41, who also featured at the Nou Camp on Saturday, had already made 215 La Liga appearances when Yamal was born.

Barca took the lead when Christensen got on the end of Raphinha’s inswinging cross to head home his first goal for the club from six yards out.

Betis substitute Edgar Gonzalez, who had been brought on for the injured Luiz Felipe, was sent off in the 33rd minute after collecting two yellow cards in quick succession.

Lewandowski scored from a Jules Kounde cross three minutes later to increase the hosts’ lead.

Raphinha added a third before half-time, following a lengthy video assistant referee check after the goal was initially ruled out for offside.

Then in the 82nd minute, Ansu Fati’s cross was turned into his own net by Betis defender Rodríguez to seal the result.

After an open first half Rashford put United ahead in the 55th minute with a thunderous long-range effort dipping into the bottom corner.

The hosts had created plenty of chances before United opened the scoring as Betis’ Joaquin saw his early curled effort hit the outside of the post.

Erik ten Hag’s side had done the hard work in Manchester last week and advanced as 5-1 winners on aggregate.

The draw for the last eight takes place on Friday (12:00 GMT).

La Liga: Rodrygo keeps Real Madrid perfect with win over Betis https://www.adomonline.com/la-liga-rodrygo-keeps-real-madrid-perfect-with-win-over-betis/ Sun, 04 Sep 2022 09:53:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2158520 Real Madrid stay perfect with a 2-1 win over an impressive Real Betis side who drop their first points of the season.

Madrid returned to the Bernabeu for the first time this season, delaying kick off in order to show off the trophies won last season.

They started strongly, but Betis could have had the lead when Nabil Fekir went down in the Madrid box under pressure from Dani Carvajal. He was denied, and, to make things worse, the French midfielder was forced off with injury soon after.

Betis were determined to play their positive, aggressive style, but that gave Madrid a route to goal. The hosts opened the scoring when David Alaba chipped a pass over Betis’ high defensive line for Vinicius to run onto. The Brazilian made it three goals in three games with a dinked finish.

The visitors exploited sleepy Madrid defending with Borja Iglesias flicking on a quick throw for Sergio Canales to equalise against his former club.

From that point, Madrid took control. Benzema, Vinicius, and Rodrygo could all have restored Real’s lead, but the visitors just about held on to resist.

After the break, it was breathless stuff with both sides countering at speed.

Carlo Ancelotti’s introduction of Fede Valverde had an instant impact, with the Uruguayan finding space in the box and setting up Rodrygo for Madrid’s second goal. Betis huffed and puffed, but Madrid kept them at arm’s length, and were a constant threat on the counter-attack.

On another day, Benzema would probably have scored a hat-trick. Madrid held on to their lead to make it four wins from four to start the season.

La Liga: Betis end Xavi’s unbeaten start at Barca https://www.adomonline.com/la-liga-betis-end-xavis-unbeaten-start-at-barca/ Sat, 04 Dec 2021 20:01:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2053977 Xavi’s unbeaten start as Barcelona boss was brought to an abrupt end as the Catalan giants were defeated at home by Real Betis in La Liga on Saturday.

Juanmi finished a swift Betis break to send the visitors third in the table, six points behind leaders Real Madrid but having played a game more.

Xavi had won his opening two league games in charge, as well as drawing with Benfica in the Champions League.

But his side now sit seventh in La Liga, six points off the top four.

It was a deserved victory for Betis, who thought they had taken the lead when Juanmi flicked the ball beyond Marc-Andre ter Stegen, only to be ruled offside.

He did however get his goal with 11 minutes to go after Betis counter-attacked down the right and worked the ball across to the forward, who slid an effort into the corner.

Philippe Coutinho poked an early strike at goal that was saved at the near post but Barcelona struggled to open up the visitors before the break.

Second-half substitute Ousmane Dembele made a difference and curled an effort wide from distance before fizzing another across the face of goal.

But Barcelona, who need a result at Bayern Munich in midweek to guarantee they reach the Champions League knockout stage, could only muster three shots on target with one of those a Clement Lenglet header from a corner.

The hosts wanted a penalty when Ronald Araujo and Andres Guardado tangled in the box in added time, only for it to be deemed a foul on the Betis captain.

It meant the visitors held on for their third successive win in La Liga and they now switch attention to a trip to Celtic in the Europa League on Thursday.

La Liga: Real Madrid misses chance to go top as Real Betis earn point in Madrid https://www.adomonline.com/la-liga-real-madrid-misses-chance-to-go-top-as-real-betis-earn-point-in-madrid/ Sun, 25 Apr 2021 22:57:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1951777 Real Madrid missed the chance to return to the top of La Liga as they were held to a goalless draw at home by Real Betis.

Zinedine Zidane picked a strong team despite the Champions League semi-final first leg against Chelsea on the horizon with Eden Hazard on the bench following a period out through injury.

Real Betis dominated much of the possession in the first half but failed to create many scoring opportunities as Real Madrid also struggled in the attacking third with Karim Benzema isolated.

Rodrygo struck the crossbar with a mishit cross before Vinicius Junior was introduced with half an hour left to play. It was Betis, however, that cranked up the pressure with Guido Rodriguez and Borja Iglesias both passing up good chances.

Hazard made his return from injury with just over 10 minutes remaining, but there was to be no breakthrough as Real Madrid were held at home, leaving them two points off Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga.
