His appointment places him at the forefront of enhancing road infrastructure across Ghana, a crucial sector for national development.

DRIP, launched in July 2024 by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, aims to improve road networks in all 275 constituencies.

The initiative provides Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) with the resources and machinery needed for effective road maintenance and construction.

With a focus on decentralizing infrastructure development, the programme empowers local authorities to undertake essential road projects efficiently and transparently.

Mr Vanderpuye’s appointment is notable due to his strong advocacy for transparency and accountability in government-led infrastructure projects.

As National Coordinator, he will oversee the implementation of DRIP, collaborating with key stakeholders to ensure its success.

AU Finance Ministers endorse African Monetary Institute Statute https://www.adomonline.com/au-finance-ministers-endorse-african-monetary-institute-statute/ Tue, 18 Feb 2025 09:08:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2505662

Ministers of Finance and Central Bank Governors from African Union (AU) Member States have endorsed the draft statute for establishing the African Monetary Institute (AMI), marking a significant step toward strengthening the continent’s financial and economic integration.

This move was endorsed by the Specialised Technical Committee on Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning, and Integration.

President John Dramani Mahama, AU Champion for Financial Institutions, announced this in his keynote address at the Heads of State and Government breakfast dialogue in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, held on the sidelines of the AU Summit. The theme of the event was “Africa at the Forefront: Mobilizing African Investment and Financing for Implementing Agenda 2063,” hosted by the Alliance of African Multilateral Financing Institutions.

The AMI is envisioned as a precursor to the African Central Bank and will undertake crucial preparatory work, including technical and legal assessments, and ensuring the implementation of macroeconomic convergence criteria. The AMI’s draft statute awaits further consideration and adoption by AU heads of state and government.

President Mahama also highlighted the African Monetary Fund (AMF), which aims to support macroeconomic stability and boost investor confidence, and the African Investment Bank, pivotal for funding infrastructure projects such as energy, transport, and digital transformation.

He also spoke on the Pan-African Stock Exchange initiative, which aims to integrate capital markets across Africa, facilitating capital mobilization, boosting intra-African investment, and offering alternative financing mechanisms for governments and the private sector.

Mahama emphasized that progress is being made on these initiatives, with efforts underway to establish the Pan-African Stock Exchange through the work of the African Security Exchanges Association and the AU Commission.

He reiterated that the establishment of the African Central Bank, African Investment Bank, African Monetary Fund, and Pan-African Stock Exchange would be instrumental in reducing dependency on external aid and fostering a self-sustaining economic ecosystem for Africa. The African Central Bank’s goal is to establish a single African currency, reducing exchange rate risks and boosting investment flows.

In his closing remarks, President Mahama called for increased political will, effective policy coordination, and continued commitment from governments, the private sector, civil society organizations, and development partners to mobilize resources for the AU’s Agenda 2063. He urged collective efforts to bridge the financing and investment gaps and drive Africa toward achieving its vision of an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful continent.

“The Africa we envision is within our reach,” Mahama concluded, highlighting the importance of reforming financial systems and investing in the continent’s people to realize the goals of Agenda 2063.

Mahama applauds AU Commission https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-applauds-au-commission/ Tue, 18 Feb 2025 06:11:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2505593 President John Dramani Mahama has commended the African Union (AU) Commission for its proactive role in building the capacity of Member States and advocating fair and equitable international tax rules.

Delivering a keynote address at the Heads of State and Government breakfast dialogue at the AU Commission headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Mahama, who serves as the AU Champion on Financial Institutions, praised the Commission’s efforts in strengthening Africa’s financial autonomy.

The event, themed “Africa at the Forefront: Mobilizing African Investment and Financing for Implementing Agenda 2063,” was held on the sidelines of the AU Summit under the auspices of the Alliance of African Multilateral Financing Institutions, also known as the Africa Club.

Mahama cited the recent withdrawal of USAID support as a wake-up call for Africa to prioritize domestic resource mobilization.

“Addressing the financing gap requires a multifaceted approach. Strengthening tax administration, combating illicit financial flows, and fostering a culture of tax compliance can significantly boost revenue generation,” he stated.

He highlighted the ongoing efforts under the United Nations Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation, describing it as a crucial step in eliminating base erosion and profit shifting, which threaten national revenues.

“It is projected that African countries need to raise their median tax-to-GDP ratios by about 13.2 percentage points to 27.2 percent of GDP by 2030 to close the financing gap,” he noted.

Mahama further emphasized the need for innovative financing mechanisms and a reformed global financial architecture to ensure equitable resource distribution.

He stressed the role of African multilateral financial institutions in addressing trade, investment, and development challenges across the continent.

“It is our responsibility to strengthen these institutions to support the continent’s transformation and the realization of Agenda 2063,” he said.

He lauded the establishment of the Alliance of African Multilateral Financial Institutions (AMFI), also known as the Africa Club, as a testament to Africa’s commitment to collaboration and homegrown solutions for development.

Mahama also underscored the importance of innovation, citing the launch of the African Virtual Investment Programme (AVIP) by the AU Commission as a significant milestone.

“By aggregating comprehensive data on investments and policies, AVIP will provide critical insights for informed policymaking, attract investment, and ensure resources are deployed for sustainable development and inclusive growth,” he stated.

He reiterated the urgency of accelerating the implementation of key AU financial institutions, including the African Central Bank, the African Investment Bank, the African Monetary Fund, and the Pan-African Stock Exchange, to facilitate investments and financing for Africa’s development agenda.

I was deceived; I regret attacking Mahama – Owusu-Bempah https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-deceived-i-regret-attacking-mahama-owusu-bempah/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 11:40:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2505306 Leader of Glorious Word Power Ministries International, Reverend Isaac Owusu-Bempah, has publicly expressed regret over his past attacks on former President John Dramani Mahama.

In an emotional confession, the controversial preacher who was once a vocal critic of Mahama, described his actions as a mistake influenced by deceptive political influences.

“I was blinded and wasted my time on unnecessary things. I rallied and fought against a good person without knowing the truth. I now realize that Mahama is a man with a good heart; that’s what God revealed to me.”

He added that upon interaction with Mahama, he can state on authority that he is a worthy of leading the nation.

The preacher commended Mahama for his leadership qualities and expressed admiration for his character beyond politics.

“Beyond politics, I genuinely like Mahama for his good heart. How could I have spoken badly against such a person? When I think of those days, I am beyond pained.”

Rev. Owusu-Bempah further accused some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of manipulating him into opposing Mahama, only to later turn against him.

The preacher also took a swipe at former President Nana Akufo-Addo, accusing him of being ungrateful despite his support for his administration.

His comments have sparked mixed reactions, with some applauding his honesty while others questioned the timing and sincerity of his apology.

Stop mass dismissals of public servants – Mpraeso MP to Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/stop-mass-dismissals-of-public-servants-mpraeso-mp-to-mahama/ Wed, 12 Feb 2025 12:22:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2503670 The Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider a directive that revokes appointments and recruitments made after 7 December 2024.

The MP has expressed concerns over the legality and fairness of the decision, warning that it could undermine job security and institutional stability.

In a letter addressed to the President, Opoku stated that the directive, signed by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, contravenes the Public Services Commission Act, 1994 (Act 482).

He argued that such actions risk setting a dangerous precedent where public sector employment becomes subject to political interference.

The MP stressed that governance transitions should not be used as a basis for mass dismissals, as public servants are protected by law from arbitrary termination.

“Public servants must not be casualties of political transitions. Their job security is protected by law, and arbitrary dismissals must be resisted,” he asserted.

Mr. Opoku further highlighted the need for due process in managing public sector appointments.

He emphasized that the stability of Ghana’s civil service depends on fair and transparent policies that prevent politically motivated purges.

As a solution, the MP has called for constructive dialogue between the Executive, the Public Services Commission, and Parliament.

He recommended that employment policies be developed to uphold professional integrity while allowing governments to make necessary strategic appointments within the confines of the law.

Speaking in an interview during President Mahama’s visit to the Central Region, Okatakyi Komey VIII emphasized the factory’s potential to drive economic growth and employment opportunities for the people of Komenda and beyond.

He urged the President to prioritize its revival, stating that its continued inactivity over the past eight years has been a major setback for the region’s development.

The chief also used the occasion to remind President Mahama about the poor state of roads in the area, stressing that the dust and deteriorating conditions are causing severe respiratory health issues among residents.

He further expressed gratitude to the President for nominating their daughter, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, as his running mate, making her Ghana’s first female Vice President.

He assured the President of the traditional council’s unwavering support for his administration.

In response, President Mahama acknowledged that it was unacceptable for the Komenda Sugar Factory to remain non-operational for eight years.

He revealed that he has directed the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry to present a comprehensive report on the factory’s current state, after which he will take decisive action to restart its operations.

President Mahama

He assured the chiefs and people of the Central Region that once revived, the factory would make the region the largest producer of sugar in Ghana.

Adding his voice, the Member of Parliament for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA), Samuel Atta Mills, thanked President Mahama for his commitment to reviving the factory.

He criticized former President Nana Akufo-Addo for failing to operationalize it during his eight-year tenure, arguing that this delay deprived many young people of employment opportunities.

He expressed confidence that President Mahama would fulfill his promise and create sustainable jobs for the unemployed youth in the area and across the country.

Ras Kuuku reveals President Mahama’s comeback inspired his upcoming EP https://www.adomonline.com/ras-kuuku-reveals-president-mahamas-comeback-inspired-his-upcoming-ep/ Thu, 06 Feb 2025 14:50:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2501565 Ghanaian reggae artiste Ras Kuuku has opened up about the inspiration behind his upcoming EP, revealing that it was fueled by the remarkable comeback of former President John Dramani Mahama.

In an interview on Daybreak Hitz with DJ Slim, Ras Kuuku expressed his admiration for Mahama’s resilience and determination, which influenced his new project. He recalled how many people, including prominent pastors, had written off Mahama’s chances of returning to power after his tenure ended in 2017.

“My next EP coming was inspired by JDM. Whatever he went through and his journey inspired my EP,” he shared.

Ras Kuuku described Mahama’s political comeback as remarkable, noting that the margin with which Mahama won was even greater than the total votes some other candidates managed to pull.

“Looking at his position where people put him, like he would never come back, he was someone nobody thought would return. But he came back and won. The gap is even larger than someone else’s win,” he said.

The artiste also drew parallels between Mahama’s journey and his own career in music, emphasizing that both are examples of the power of perseverance.

“I see that Ras Kuuku, your brand, and whatever you’re doing is not too late. What’s ahead is what’s significant,” he added.

Ras Kuuku’s reveal underscores the values of hard work, patience, and consistency, advocating that time is a storyteller of the future.

The project, initiated by the NDC government in 2011, was left incomplete after Mahama exited office.

The college, located in Anomabu, features lecture theatres, a principal’s bungalow, fish ponds, boreholes, and a water pumping station. Designed to accommodate 300 students, it aims to promote sustainable fishing practices and aquaculture education.

During his Thank You tour of the Central Region on Thursday, February 6, Mahama stressed the importance of completing the facility, noting that only furniture, teaching materials, and campus roadwork remain before students can begin their studies.

“This is why we promised to complete all abandoned projects, whether started by the NPP or the NDC,” Mahama stated.

“We will secure the necessary funds to finish it. The project is near completion—only chairs, tables, beds, and some campus roads remain to be done for the first phase. Fortunately, every government prepares a new budget, and the Finance Minister will present ours in Parliament this March.

“I have instructed the Fisheries Minister to take immediate action and work with the Finance Minister to allocate the required funds. Once we complete phase one, we will move on to phase two,” he added.

Speaking at the 2025 Africa Prosperity Dialogues in Accra, he emphasized the need for a strategic shift to harness the continent’s full economic potential.

President Mahama argued that trading in finished goods would not only strengthen intra-African trade ties but also foster economic growth, reduce import dependence, and create wealth for citizens.

The 2025 Africa Prosperity Dialogues was held under the theme “Delivering Africa’s Single Market through Infrastructure: Invest, Connect and Integrate.”

The discussions focused on enhancing trade relationships across the continent to create jobs, boost intercontinental business, and build a stronger African economy.

During the closing ceremony, President Mahama highlighted the importance of trade capacity-building and the creation of an enabling environment for private sector growth.

He urged African leaders to prioritize supporting private businesses to help reduce unemployment and improve the overall quality of life on the continent.

“African nations must invest in infrastructure and policies that drive the production of finished goods and foster private sector growth. This will open doors for employment and elevate economic standards,” President Mahama remarked.

The call comes at a crucial time when Africa is focusing on operationalizing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to strengthen its position in the global market.

Odike demands dismissal of Emeafa Hardcastle [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/odike-demands-dismissal-of-emeafa-hardcastle-video/ Wed, 29 Jan 2025 15:46:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2498472 The founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addae Odike, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss Emeafa Hardcastle, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Commission, following a heated exchange at the Appointments Committee proceedings.

The altercation between Ms. Hardcastle and Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh occurred on Tuesday during the vetting of Defence Minister-designate Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.

Tensions flared after Ms. Hardcastle reportedly referred to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus as a “Micro-Minority,” leading to a confrontation.

Reacting to the incident, Mr. Odike, in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, described Ms. Hardcastle’s behavior as disrespectful and inappropriate.

“What is painful in this country is that people work hard to pay taxes, yet those in high offices still disrespect us. Mahama needs to fire her because that attitude is uncalled for. Respect and consideration for others are signs of an educated person,” Mr. Odike stated.

The retreat convenes African leaders to discuss and advance key reforms aimed at strengthening the Union’s ability to address the continent’s pressing challenges.

Mahama’s attendance underscores Ghana’s commitment to influencing continental policies and fostering unity, development, and self-reliance across African nations.

His decision to use the presidential jet for this official engagement follows public criticism regarding his previous use of his brother’s private jet for certain domestic and international trips.

This choice signals responsiveness to public concerns over transparency and the appropriateness of presidential travel arrangements.

Speaking during the President’s thank-you tour to Ho on Friday, he reassured the people that the future remained bright for the region.

“The sun will surely shine high on the Volta Region,” he stated, expressing gratitude to the President for his appointments so far and for entrusting sons and daughters of the region with significant roles.

President John Dramani Mahama embarked on the thank-you tour starting from the Volta Region to express his gratitude to the people for their overwhelming support and votes during the elections.

He expressed appreciation to them for their overwhelming support in voting him back to power, describing the region as a beacon of democracy and a cornerstone of the NDC.

President Mahama emphasized that his appointments were guided by principles of competence and the ability to deliver, adding that the appointment of Madam Dzifa Abla Gomashie as Minister of Tourism was aimed at developing the region’s rich tourism potential.

Similarly, the Roads and Highways Minister, Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza, was expected to ensure the maintenance and improvement of quality road infrastructure.

President Mahama reiterated his commitment to fulfilling the needs of the Volta Region and leveraging its strategic importance for national development.

Highlighting the region’s contributions to the NDC’s success, Mr. Agbavitor said it had a 90.11 percent voter turnout in favor of the party in the 2024 general election, reclaiming the Hohoe seat (winning all parliamentary seats in the region).

It significantly reduced the influence of opponents by 48 percent, he said, expressing optimism that with the President’s initiatives and resetting agenda, the margin would shrink further to single digits in the future.

He, however, indicated that the region remained open to more appointments in the coming years.

Togbe Patamia Dzekle VII, Paramount Chief of Bator and Vice President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, pledged the support of the chiefs to helping the President achieve his “Resetting Ghana Agenda.”

He reminded the President of the promises made to the people during his campaign and the advice offered by the chiefs, urging him to deliver on them.

Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, expressed his appreciation to the President for the swift ministerial appointments since taking office.

He urged the President to prioritize resolving the water challenges facing Ho and fix the roads around the region.

Rev. Seth Mawutor, Chairman of the Christian Episcopal Association in the Volta Region, appealed to the people to exercise patience and pray for the President’s success.

He emphasized that the task ahead was challenging, and collective support was needed for the President to fulfill his promises.

He said this during his Thank-You tour in Ho.

Addressing a durbar of chiefs and the people, the president expressed his deep commitment to ensuring that the region finally receives its fair share of national development.

His assurances touched on critical infrastructure projects and social interventions aimed at boosting economic growth and improving the quality of life in the area.

Central to his promises was the rehabilitation of the Ho-Denu road, a vital economic artery for trade and commerce.

He also pledged to complete the long-awaited Eastern Corridor Road, which has been a source of frustration for residents due to delays.

The president underscored his administration’s commitment to revamping the Ho airport, enhancing its capacity to spur tourism and business opportunities.

President Mahama also outlined plans to extend the Keta Sea Defence Project and develop the Keta Port, both of which are expected to protect coastal communities and create avenues for maritime trade.
He also assured victims of the Akosombo-Kpong dam spillage that they would be duly compensated for their losses.

In education, the president promised to transform the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) into a world-class tertiary institution and upgrade the Ohaʋu Agricultural College to a full tertiary status.

Mahama to join other African Leaders for high-Level AU Institutional Reforms Retreat in Nairobi https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-to-join-other-african-leaders-for-high-level-au-institutional-reforms-retreat-in-nairobi/ Sat, 25 Jan 2025 15:08:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2497101 President John Mahama has departed Ghana for Kenya, where he will join other African leaders to participate in a High-Level Retreat on African Union (AU) Institutional Reforms.

The retreat is scheduled to take place from 26th to 27th January 2025, in Nairobi.

The event, which is being held at the invitation of Kenya’s President William Ruto, will focus on the progress and future of AU reforms.

President Ruto, who was designated the African Union Champion for Institutional Reform in February 2024, will use the retreat to update fellow heads of state on the strides made in implementing the mandate given to him by the Assembly of the African Union. He will also present proposals for the way forward for their consideration.

The retreat provides an opportunity for President Mahama to contribute his leadership experience and insights, as well as Ghana’s commitment to the African Union agenda.

His participation is expected to enrich the discussions aimed at enhancing the efficiency, accountability, and sustainability of the AU as it strives to meet the needs of the African continent.

The call for AU reforms was first made in 2016 when African leaders identified the urgent need to restructure the organization to better address the continent’s challenges.

The AU’s role in driving Africa’s Agenda 2063 vision focused on inclusive economic growth and development was seen as critical in shaping the future of the continent.

The outcome of extensive consultations on these reforms led to the identification of five key areas requiring immediate action to transform the AU:

  1. Prioritising Continental Scope – The AU must focus on fewer priority areas with a broader continental reach.
  2. Structural and Operational Review – There is a need to review the structure and operations of the AU, ensuring institutional realignment for improved service delivery.
  3. Connecting with African Citizens – The AU must strengthen its connection with the African citizenry.
  4. Operational Effectiveness – The AU needs to improve its operational efficiency in executing its mandate.
  5. Sustainable Financing – The organisation must implement sustainable financing mechanisms to reduce its over-reliance on development partners.

Mahama must appoint more females, persons with disability – Bashiratu Kamal https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-must-appoint-more-females-persons-with-disability-bashiratu-kamal/ Sat, 25 Jan 2025 11:32:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2497026 Fellow at the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ), Bashiratu Kamal, has called on President John Mahama to ensure greater inclusivity in his appointments by increasing the representation of women and including persons with disabilities in his government.

According to Madam Kamal, while President Mahama has made commendable efforts in some areas regarding appointments, significant gaps still need to be addressed.

In an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, January 25, she noted that despite some progress in balancing appointments between men and women, the overall representation remains unimpressive.

She pointed out that with the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill, the measurement of inclusivity should not be done arbitrarily but across different levels of governance, including district and ministerial appointments.

“As we speak, out of 42 ministerial appointments, only seven are women, which amounts to a woefully inadequate 16.7%. However, in other areas, the President has done well in ensuring balance,” she noted.

She also referenced a press statement from advocacy groups representing persons with disabilities, expressing their disappointment over the lack of representation in government so far.

“As much as possible, it is important that whilst we strive to build an inclusive government, we consider all people and minority groups in our society,” she stressed.

Madam Kamal cautioned that there may be further disappointment in the coming days as more appointments are made, urging the President to take the necessary steps to address the concerns of underrepresented groups.

She also acknowledged the concerns of party members who may not be entirely satisfied with certain appointments but reiterated that the President’s decisions are not made in isolation.

“For a country where we have always spoken about the ‘winner takes all’ system and how it deprives us of utilising the expertise of other Ghanaians, the President has done well. Some members of the party rank and file may not be too happy with the caliber of some appointees, but I believe the President knows what he is doing. These decisions are not made by him alone,” she stated.

I’ve not been sidelined; I am in close touch with President Mahama – Bole/Bamboi MP https://www.adomonline.com/ive-not-been-sidelined-i-am-in-close-touch-with-president-mahama-bole-bamboi-mp/ Thu, 23 Jan 2025 11:01:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2496255 The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bole/Bamboi, Yusif Sulemana, has dismissed claims that he has been sidelined following the announcement of President John Dramani Mahama’s ministerial list, which did not feature his name.

The MP assured his constituents that he remains in close communication with the President and is focused on serving their interests.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews on Wednesday, January 22, Mr. Sulemana addressed concerns that emerged after some disturbances broke out in his constituency.

These were reportedly linked to dissatisfaction over his absence from the President’s ministerial appointments.

He emphasised that his relationship with President Mahama remains strong.

“I’ve not been sidelined, and I am closely in touch with President Mahama,” he stated. Mr. Sulemana explained that the President’s decision to limit his cabinet to 60 ministers was a reflection of his commitment to a lean and efficient government.

He further highlighted that President Mahama’s roots in Bole provide a unique advantage for the constituency.

“The President promised to appoint 60 ministers, and he is a man coming from Bole. What do we need a minister for? We are looking for a minister or an appointment to bring development to our people. So if we have the President himself coming from the constituency, what will be a minister’s duty in this equation?” Mr. Sulemana asked.

The MP called for calm among his constituents and urged them to rally behind President Mahama’s leadership.

He reiterated that the President’s presence and influence would ensure development for Bole/Bamboi, even without a ministerial appointment from the area.

Majority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has refuted claims that President John Dramani Mahama used a private jet for his recent visit to the United Arab Emirates.

The allegation, made by former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul, has sparked debate over the President’s travel arrangements.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, Dr. Ato Forson dismissed the assertion, stating that he personally accompanied President Mahama on the trip, which was made on a commercial Emirates flight.

“I traveled with President Mahama on his recent trip to the UAE, and he didn’t use a private jet. I was on the flight with him, and we used Emirates,” Dr. Forson explained.

Challenging the former Defence Minister to substantiate his claim, Dr. Forson insisted that evidence should be presented to support the allegation.

“Mr. Speaker, the immediate past Defence Minister claimed that the President used a rented private jet, and I challenge him to bring evidence now,” he stated emphatically.

Bole unrest: Mahama never promised anyone ministerial position – Savannah Regional Minister-designate https://www.adomonline.com/bole-unrest-mahama-never-promised-anyone-ministerial-position-savannah-regional-minister-designate/ Wed, 22 Jan 2025 10:02:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2495699 The Savannah Regional Minister-Designate, Salisu Bi-Awuribe, has clarified that President John Dramani Mahama never promised anyone a ministerial position.

He said not even the MP for the Bole-Bamboi constituency, Yusif Sulemana or anyone from the Savannah region.

Rather, he noted that what President Mahama assured the people of Bole was his commitment to bringing adequate development to the area.

“There was never a promise by President Mahama to appoint anyone from Savannah, including the MP for Bole, to any position in government or anyone at all. What President Mahama has done is to ensure that the people of Bole receive the development they deserve. That should be the focus, not ministerial appointments,” he said in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem.

Mr. Bi-Awuribe acknowledged the competence of Mr Sulemana, stating, “The MP for Bole is competent and could occupy any position he is given, but the decision lies with the President.”

His comments come after some individuals in Bole reportedly destroyed party properties in protest, claiming that President Mahama had promised the MP a ministerial position if the NDC came to power.

But Mr. Bi-Awuribe condemned the actions, calling them “barbaric,” and said the party distances itself from the destructive behaviour. He called on the police to take action against those responsible.

“We cannot condone such actions. Whether you are a party member or not, if you break the law, you should be arrested and punished,” he said.

The Minister-Designate stressed that despite the unrest, the region remains hopeful.

“We are still praying that some deputy positions may be allocated to the region. We have competent people here who can serve well, but that doesn’t mean we should destroy things.”

He also praised President Mahama’s leadership and his ability to balance appointments across the country.

“Mahama is a unique individual who is committed to involving everyone in government. He is the only one who ensures fairness in appointments. No one is being used and dumped,” Mr. Bi-Awuribe stated.

He further reassured the people of Savannah that there would be more opportunities for them.

“If anyone says Mahama will appoint only his family and friends, they are lying. There are many more positions, and everyone will get their share when it’s due. We must maintain the trust we have in Mahama. He has competent people who will work to make Ghana better.”

Our women cannot be second-class appointees – Minority Leader criticises Mahama’s gender representation https://www.adomonline.com/our-women-cannot-be-second-class-appointees-minority-leader-criticises-mahamas-gender-representation/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 21:25:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2495566 The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed disappointment over the perceived lack of gender balance in President John Dramani Mahama’s ministerial appointments.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, January 21, Mr Afenyo-Markin accused the President of failing to uphold his campaign promise to ensure at least 30% of government appointments go to women, as mandated by the Affirmative Action Law.

The gender debate emerged when the Speaker of Parliament read the President’s latest list of ministerial nominees, which reportedly did not include any women.

This omission, according to Afenyo-Markin, is a stark deviation from the President’s commitment to champion gender equality in leadership.

“It appears President John Mahama is not willing to stick to his own promise made to Ghanaians prior to the 2024 elections that nearly 30% of all appointments would go to women in his government,” Mr Afenyo-Markin lamented.

He further criticised the President for not matching the record of former President Nana Akufo-Addo, whom he described as a true gender champion.

“There are over 30 women elected to Parliament from the NDC majority side. Of all these hardworking women, only a handful have been given substantive ministerial appointments.

“Is it the case that they are being matched for deputy ministerial roles? That is not right. Our women cannot be second-class appointees,” he asserted.

The Effutu MP called on the President to demonstrate genuine belief in the competence and capability of women, arguing that inclusive representation is critical for addressing systemic gender inequality.

Ato Forson urges Minority to allow two-week-old Mahama gov’t to steer affairs of the nation https://www.adomonline.com/ato-forson-urges-minority-to-allow-two-week-old-mahama-govt-to-steer-affairs-of-the-nation/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 16:03:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2495469 The Majority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has called on the Minority to exercise restraint and allow President Mahama’s newly sworn-in government the peace and space to govern effectively.

Addressing a press conference in Parliament on Tuesday, 21 January 2025, Dr. Forson urged the opposition to engage constructively rather than offer premature criticisms.

“The Mahama administration is barely two weeks old, yet it has already been inundated with unwarranted attacks from the Minority. I appeal to our colleagues on the other side to give the government the necessary breathing space to steer the affairs of this country. Let us work together to build a better Ghana,” Dr. Forson stated emphatically.

The Majority Leader emphasised that President Mahama’s government has demonstrated a clear vision for addressing national challenges and implementing policies aimed at economic recovery and social cohesion.

He further noted that while dissent is an essential part of democracy, the opposition must avoid actions that could derail national progress or destabilise governance.

“The government has laid out a comprehensive roadmap to address the economic and social issues confronting our nation. Let us allow it to implement its policies without undue interference,” he added.

Dr. Forson concluded by expressing confidence in the government’s ability to deliver on its mandate, urging all stakeholders to support the administration in its quest to fulfil the aspirations of Ghanaians.

Sammi Awuku commends Mahama over recruitment of young politicians into gov’t https://www.adomonline.com/sammi-awuku-commends-mahama-over-recruitment-of-young-politicians-into-govt/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 12:21:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2495333 The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North in the Eastern region, Sammi Awuku, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for some of the appointments made to his government.

Following his victory in the December 7, 2024, presidential election and subsequent swearing-in on January 7, 2025, President Mahama appointed key individuals to lead state agencies and state-owned enterprises in acting capacities.

These appointments are part of the President’s efforts to solidify leadership within critical institutions as he establishes his administration.

On Adom FM’s Burning Issues, the MP, who also served as the former Director-General for the National Lottery Authority (NLA), expressed his satisfaction with the appointment of some young politicians.

Despite belonging to the opposition party, Sammi Awuku said, “Let me also commend the President on some of the appointments he has made because he has recruited some young politicians into government. Look at George Opare Addo, he is a solid guy. He’s been the youth organizer, DC, and now the Minister for Youth and Sports.”

“Sammy Gyamfi too has been appointed to oversee the PMMC. A solid guy, and I reject anyone who says he is too small for the position. Who do you expect should be appointed after toiling for his party? Even my successor, Alhaji Mohammed, is a solid man.”

Sammi Awuku further responded to Ghana’s criticism of the appointment of Mohammed Abdul Salam, a Muslim, as the acting CEO of the NLA. He said that accepting the position does not imply involvement in the lottery business. “When I was appointed to oversee the NLA, I heard people from my church raising concerns. I did my best, and now that Alhaji has replaced me, the same thing is happening. But what I want to say is that the profit made from this lottery is used to support the country’s economy and to help the needy as well.”

The policy, introduced by the Akufo-Addo administration, was a central theme in President Mahama’s 2024 election campaign, where he pledged to refine and improve it if elected.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 20, Haruna Iddrisu clarified that the government has no plans to cancel the Free SHS policy.

Instead, he highlighted plans to make the initiative more sustainable and to broaden its scope, ensuring greater benefits for Ghanaians.

Haruna Iddrisu also announced the government’s intention to convene a stakeholder forum to gather insights and recommendations aimed at enhancing the education sector.

“Let me assure this committee that President John Dramani Mahama has no intention to cancel Free SHS. Therefore, those who listen to him, even during his campaign, will hear that he has stated that he will expand Free SHS.

“It was to inform Ghanaians that as President of the Republic, he wants to give 2 million to Article 25 of the 1992 Constitution and Article 38, which outlines the objectives of our educational policy.

“Chair, the important thing is that he will subject the Free SHS to a review.”

Mahama’s commitment to 60 ministers shows he’s a promise keeper – Kwame Agbodza https://www.adomonline.com/mahamas-commitment-to-60-ministers-shows-hes-a-promise-keeper-kwame-agbodza/ Mon, 20 Jan 2025 14:50:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2494899 Roads and Highways Minister-designate, Kwame Agbodza, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to limiting the number of ministers in his administration to 60, highlighting the move as a means to reduce wasteful public expenditure.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee on Monday, January 20, Agbodza emphasised that Mahama’s decision to stick to this pledge, including Deputy Ministers and Regional Ministers, demonstrates his dedication to keeping his promises.

Mr. Agbodza described Mahama as a “man of his word,” noting that many doubted a president would maintain such a limit on the number of ministers.

The Adaklu lawmaker also pointed out that this step was a positive example of fiscal responsibility, reinforcing the President’s focus on ensuring a leaner and more efficient government.

This approach, according to the nominee, aligns with Mahama’s broader agenda of cutting waste and prioritising effective governance.

“The fact that President Mahama is insisting on having only 60 ministers is one of the ways to cut waste in public expenditure. Nobody thought that a president would insist on having 60 ministers, including Deputy Ministers and Regional Ministers, but he is doing it. He’s a man of his word,” Agbodza said.

Speaking at the first Akwasidae celebration of the year at the Manhyia Palace on Sunday, January 19, President Mahama outlined plans to address the challenges hindering the 250-bed hospital’s operations.

He highlighted the hospital’s crucial role in easing the patient burden on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), the region’s largest healthcare facility, which is operating beyond its capacity and requires significant renovations.

“The Sewua Hospital is not operational because there is no electricity, there is no water, and the road to the hospital has not been constructed. I wish to assure you that we will tackle it immediately and make sure that we can open the doors of that hospital so that it will ease the pressure on Komfo Anokye,” Mahama stated.

He explained that transferring patients to Sewua would allow for necessary renovations at KATH without disrupting its services.

The Sewua Hospital has been mired in controversy after its premature commissioning by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, despite warnings from the contractor, Euroget De-Invest S.A., that critical components were incomplete.

The move drew public criticism and raised concerns about the delivery of operational healthcare infrastructure.

President Mahama is legacy-focused – A/R Minister designate on completing stalled projects in Ashanti https://www.adomonline.com/president-mahama-is-legacy-focused-a-r-minister-designate-on-completing-stalled-projects-in-ashanti/ Fri, 17 Jan 2025 14:39:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2494200 Ashanti Regional Minister designate, Dr. Frank Amoakohene is reaffirming the National Democratic Congress’s commitment to boosting developmental growth in the Ashanti region.

Describing President Mahama’s second administration as ‘legacy-focused’, the regional Minister-designate says he is poised to support the President accomplish his visions for the Ashanti region.

Dr. Amoakohene is assuring residents of honouring their campaign promises including the completion of most stalled projects in the region.

The Ashanti region is home to over 5 million inhabitants in Ghana, making it the country’s second most populous region.

But the region has over the years been challenged with infrastructural deficits under successive governments, especially in the healthcare and trade sectors.

The only biggest market in the region’s capital, the Kejetia Market was demolished in almost a decade ago to make way for renovation into a modern trading centre.

After the first phase of the market’s redevelopment, its second phase which was to accommodate more of the traders now sits uncompleted and covered in weeds.

Access to quality healthcare in the region has also been a drudgery to residents as the only modern hospital, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital grapples with congestion.

The Sewua and Afari Military hospital were to complement healthcare delivery to the region, but the two projects have also since not seen their commissioning.

Following his nomination by the President, Ashanti regional minister-designate, Dr. Frank Amoakohene has been outlining his priorities for the region once given the nod by Parliament.

“Everything the President spoke about; we are going to work on that. He made a strong promise that government is continuous. For that matter, every project that was started irrespective of the government, we need to go through to completion,” he said.

Dr. Amoakohene is assuring of accountability and commitment of the NDC government in the region.

“John Mahama in his first tenure was a lamb, but now he is coming as a lion. He is not going spare anyone who will come in his way so far as the progress of the nation is concerned. Because he is legacy focused,” he said.

The medical doctor’s nomination has been greeted with excitement from residents as they anticipate transformational growth for the region.

Dr. Amoakohene, deemed the youngest regional minister, is however courting support from the citizenry to accomplish his visions for the region.

Prof. Kobby Mensah predicts Mahama will reshuffle his appointees https://www.adomonline.com/prof-kobby-mensah-predicts-mahama-will-reshuffle-his-appointees/ Fri, 17 Jan 2025 13:25:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2494178 A Marketing lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, Prof. Kobby Mensah, has predicted that President John Mahama will most likely carry out a ministerial reshuffle during his four-year term.

Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews, he praised the president’s approach to appointments so far, noting a focus on party loyalty, professionalism, and regional balance compared to his predecessor, Nana Akufo-Addo.

“I have no doubt the president will ensure fair representation for almost all regions,” Prof. Mensah remarked, urging Ghanaians to remain patient as appointments unfold.

Unlike Akufo-Addo, who largely avoided reshuffles, he believes President Mahama will adopt a more flexible approach, allowing room for adjustments to meet demands for inclusivity and performance.

He also highlighted key appointments already made by President Mahama, including the Finance, Energy, and Justice Ministers, all of whom have strong ties to the party.

According to Prof. Mensah, this marks a significant shift from Akufo-Addo’s government, where some senior officials lacked strong grassroots connections within the party.

“Under the previous administration, sensitive positions were held by individuals with minimal involvement at the party’s constituency level. President Mahama’s appointments reflect an effort to strengthen party loyalty and connect more with the base,” he explained.

Prof. Mensah acknowledged public concerns about regional representation in ministerial appointments but reassured the public of the president’s commitment to balance.

“President Mahama has ample time to ensure inclusivity. His selections so far also show a focus on gender balance, demographics, and professional diversity,” he added.

On the president’s promise to limit ministerial appointments to 60, Prof. Mensah expressed confidence that this key pledge would be upheld.

“This is a flagship promise, and breaking it would destroy public trust. I believe the president will stick to it,” he stated.

Prof. Mensah concluded by emphasizing that the president’s ability to balance inclusivity, party loyalty, and professionalism will be central to his success over the next four years.

“Mahama’s success over the next four years will largely depend on his ability to strike a balance between inclusivity, party loyalty, and professionalism,” Prof. Mensah concluded.

Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe stated that the President’s determination to constitute the leanest government under the Fourth Republic remains unchanged.

In an interview in Kumasi, Mr Tamakloe explained that cutting down government expenditures was a key strategy the President sought to adopt for efficient resource management.

He assured Ghanaians that the overwhelming mandate given to the President and the NDC would be used judiciously to build a strong and resilient nation for the benefit of all citizens.

Mr Tamakloe emphasized that reducing waste in public expenditures would be one of the cardinal principles of the Mahama administration.

Responding to the new government’s reduction of ministries from 30 to 23, Mr Tamakloe maintained that the party would not renege on promises made in its 2024 manifesto, describing it as a social contract between the NDC and Ghanaians.

He further assured the people of Ghana that President Mahama and the NDC would not take the confidence reposed in them for granted, stressing their commitment to working in the best interest of the citizens who brought them to power.

The President has so far nominated three individuals who have already been vetted by Parliament:

  • Dr Dominic Ayine, Attorney General and Minister of Justice

President Mahama had pledged to put together his cabinet within 14 days of being sworn in and is expected to release nominees for the remaining ministries in the coming days.

TEWU urges Mahama to expedite conditions of service implementation https://www.adomonline.com/tewu-urges-mahama-to-expedite-conditions-of-service-implementation/ Wed, 15 Jan 2025 16:12:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2493266 The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of TUC (Ghana) has called on the Mahama administration to expedite the implementation of revised conditions of service currently under negotiation with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).

In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, TEWU’s General Secretary, King James Azortibah, emphasized the urgent need for action, citing unfulfilled assurances from the FWSC following a nationwide strike in November 2024.

“TEWU of TUC (Ghana) has some emergency pending issues with the FWSC regarding the delayed conclusion and implementation of reviewed conditions of service for our members in the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, Ghana Library Authority (GLA), and public and technical universities. The gift we want from the new government is the timely conclusion of these negotiations,” Mr. Azortibah stated.

TEWU further urged the government to actively involve labor unions in socio-economic policy reviews.

Highlighting key areas such as the Free Senior High School Programme, constitutional reforms, and Ghana-IMF agreements, the union stressed the importance of considering workers’ perspectives in decision-making processes.

“Labour’s input must be sought and seriously considered in such reviews, as the cumulative negative effects are borne by Ghanaian workers in both formal and informal sectors,” the statement added.

The union also appealed to President Mahama to address the formation of rival unions in public universities, calling it a divisive practice. They urged the government to denounce such actions and direct relevant state agencies to ensure compliance with established labor laws.
