Four well-known Ghanaian musicians share surprising family ties https://www.adomonline.com/four-well-known-ghanaian-musicians-share-surprising-family-ties/ Sat, 17 Aug 2024 01:36:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2435130 In Ghana’s vibrant music scene, some of the biggest names are not just connected by fame but by blood as well.

Surprisingly, four of the country’s most prominent artistes share family ties that many fans might not be aware of.

Despite their family bonds, these stars have carved out individual paths in the industry, often navigating complex relationships along the way.

King Promise and KiDi

It was revealed during an episode of United Showbiz that King Promise and KiDi are cousins.

This revelation surfaced after a dispute between the two, sparked by King Promise’s management asking for his verse to be removed from KiDi’s hit song Enjoyment.

Despite this tension, their connection remains strong. Following a joint performance, King Promise took to social media to acknowledge their relationship, posting:

“Big love, cousin! I remember when we began this music journey, like yesterday! Proud of you, like you are of me!”

While the two artistes have pursued solo careers, they remain major figures in Ghana’s music scene.

Interestingly, despite their shared family background, their musical styles differ significantly, and they haven’t collaborated on many projects, partly due to past disagreements.

Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy

Another surprising connection exists between two of Ghana’s biggest dancehall artistes, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy. Known for their rivalry in the music industry, few people are aware that they are actually related.

This surprising detail was shared by Shatta Wale’s mother, Elsie Avemegah, during an interview on Peace FM in 2019.

According to Madam Elsie, Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale are cousins, with both hailing from the Ahiableh family. She explained that while neither artist may be aware of this connection, Stonebwoy’s mother is her aunt, making the two artistes family.

“Both of them are not aware, but I know that Stonebwoy’s biological mother is my auntie. I am from the Ahiableh family, and Stonebwoy’s uncle is Ahiableh, and my grandfather is Ahiableh. So they are related, and they both don’t know,” she shared.

Despite their familial bond, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy have been perceived as fierce competitors within the industry, often labelled as rivals. Their ongoing feuds have overshadowed the fact that they share the same lineage.

These revelations highlight the complex and intertwined relationships in Ghana’s entertainment industry, where family ties can coexist with fierce professional competition.

Even though they are related by blood, these artistes continue to thrive independently, each making their mark on Ghanaian music in their own unique way.

During an interview on Hitz FM, Stonebwoy explained that he saw the message while scrolling through social media but didn’t feel the need to respond.

He attributed this to having many messages he hadn’t responded to yet, and King Promise’s message simply fell into that category.

Stonebwoy cautioned that his lack of response should not be interpreted as harboring any ill feelings towards King Promise.

He reiterated that he values congratulatory messages and believes in extending such gestures to others in the industry.

Asked if some utterances made prior and after the awards night contributed to his decision to snub the congratulatory message, Stonebwoy remarked that he is not petty and has no issues with King Promise personally.

He described King Promise as one of the junior brothers in the music industry, reminding that they have collaborated in the past.

Stonebwoy emphasized that he prefers to avoid unnecessary drama or misunderstandings in the industry.

He urged against misconstruing his actions as indicative of any underlying issues with King Promise.

Efia Odo comes under fire over comments on Stonebwoy https://www.adomonline.com/efia-odo-comes-under-fire-over-comments-on-stonebwoy/ Sat, 01 Jun 2024 01:18:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2403098 Actress and socialite Efia Odo has faced significant backlash over her comments regarding Stonebwoy and the upcoming Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).

Her remarks were related to the Artiste of the Year category, where she suggested that an older artist like Stonebwoy should not win merely to equal the achievements of other top-tier artists.

Efia Odo expressed her support for King Promise, advocating that the younger, vibrant artist should be crowned the winner.

In a series of tweets, she praised King Promise as the future of Ghanaian music, stating that the Artist of the Year title should go to him.

She remarked that King Promise’s numbers speak for themselves and implied that Stonebwoy’s bid for the title was driven by a desire to match the accomplishments of Shatta Wale and Sarkodie, who have each won the award twice.

But Efia Odo’s comments did not sit well with Stonebwoy’s supporters, who took to social media to criticize her.

They argued that her remarks were disrespectful to Stonebwoy, who has made significant contributions to the music industry.

The controversy has sparked a heated debate among fans, with many defending Stonebwoy’s legacy and right to compete for the prestigious award.

It’s us against the world – King Promise speaks on music industry https://www.adomonline.com/its-us-against-the-world-king-promise-speaks-on-music-industry/ Wed, 20 Dec 2023 13:48:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2334798 Ghanaian highlife and Afrobeats artiste, King Promise has expressed discontent about the lack of unity among musicians in the country.

He cited how a colleague refused to allow him to perform at his show in London to buttress his point.

King Promise stated that, some Ghanaian musicians see collaborations like these as competition.

“I was in London sometime and there was a concert by a Ghanaian artiste I was there and they didn’t let me perform, I’m like are we fighting ourselves? I came to show you guys love. Respectfully I can actually sell out the venue, it’s for Ghana at the end of the day but I think they see it as competition rather than us building together” he said in an interview with Kwadwo Sheldon.

King Promise believes the music industry would expand if artistes build pleasant relationships with each other.

“It’s just the mentality of us as Ghanaians. It’s not us against each other, it’s us against the world. I have been on several stages, Wizkid put me on a stage, and whenever we are in the same city together, Omah Lay comes to my show and vice versa” he said.

His comments come at a time the Creative Arts Agency and some musicians called on DJs and radio stations to play Ghanaian songs for enhanced promotion through the #PlayGhana campaign.

Nigerians outraged as Super Eagles Instagram admin features Ghanaian song https://www.adomonline.com/nigerians-outraged-as-super-eagles-instagram-admin-features-ghanaian-song/ Thu, 12 Oct 2023 13:23:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2305079 The administrator of Super Eagles official Instagram account has been attacked for using a Ghanaian song in a training video.

Ahead of their friendly match against Saudi Arabia, the team’s Instagram admin use King Promise’s “Terminator” song as the background music.

This choice of music erupted into a firestorm of criticism, exposing the rift between Nigerian and Ghanaian Afrobeat music lovers.

Irate Nigerian fans took to the comments section to vent their anger and demanded removal of the post.

Some even threatened to unfollow Super Eagles’ official Instagram page if their request is not granted.

Others also called for the administrator of the page to be sacked.

But the conduct of these Nigerian fans have been described as hypocritical since many Ghanaians and other nationals use Nigerian songs in their social media contents.

However, others argue that, Nigerians want to promote their music at any given opportunity.

Music critics also say what happened only exposes the tension between highlife, a genre deeply rooted in Ghana, and Afrobeats being championed by Nigerian artistes.

Aside this social media banter, the Super Eagles is focused on their upcoming international friendly match against Saudi Arabia.

The game will take place at the Estádio Municipal de Portimão in Portugal on Friday evening, with a kick-off time of 5:pm.

Following the Saudi Arabia clash, Nigeria will face Mozambique in another friendly match next week.

These friendly matches serve as crucial preparation for the Super Eagles as they gear up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with a pivotal encounter against Lesotho scheduled for November.

Let’s keep our prayers up for Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Black Sherif & King Promise – Bulldog says https://www.adomonline.com/lets-keep-our-prayers-up-for-sarkodie-stonebwoy-black-sherif-king-promise-bulldog-says/ Wed, 23 Aug 2023 12:44:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2286303 Artiste manager Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, also known as Bulldog and formerly the manager of dancehall icon Shatta Wale, has added his voice to the chorus of support for Ghana’s music stars.

Drawing from his industry experience, which includes managing the celebrated music group VIP during their prime years, Bulldog emphasized the need to support acts like Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Black Sherif, and King Promise.

In a statement, Bulldog encouraged Ghanaians to stand in solidarity and keep their prayers alive for these artistes who are consistently elevating Ghana’s cultural footprint worldwide.

“Our artistes are not just entertainers; they are ambassadors of our culture, carrying our identity to the global arena,” Bulldog wrote.

Reflecting on Ghana’s rich musical history, Bulldog drew parallels between the present-day Afrobeats phenomenon and the legacy of iconic groups like Osibisa and VIP, who blazed trails for Ghanaian music on both the African continent and the global stage.

“These artistes are setting the pace for a new generation, and their deliberate and constant efforts are nothing short of a generational blessing,” Bulldog asserted.

Bulldog, known for his candid perspectives, further suggested that it’s a medium for communication just as much as it is for entertainment.

He wrote, “Music has always been politics, a means of conveying messages and inspiring change,” he noted. “Unfortunately, we have yet to fully grasp the potential of music as a force for political and cultural impact.”

“The only difference between politicians and musicians lies in the melodies they use to convey their messages,” he observed. “The day we recognize this truth is the day we propel our nation to attain global success once more.”

I was advised to ignore VGMA – King Promise admits https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-advised-to-ignore-vgma-king-promise-admits/ Sat, 27 May 2023 12:41:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2253969 Ghanaian singer, King Promise would have lost his two awards at this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) had he listened to people to quit the popular awards.

According to him, many people advised him to boycott the VGMA after going home empty handed several years of getting nominations.

King Promise, however, turned down such counsel and entered nominations for his fans, who he said had been his strong bone over the years.

King Promise, who is known for songs such as CCTV, Choplife, Ginger, Tokyo and Commando, said apart from his fans, he has higher calling, which is to be constant in music production.

“I always get going regardless. I feel like I have a higher calling than just letting things get to me because a lot of people listen to me and it brings joy into their lives. Put a smile on their faces, it makes them feel good and lifts them up when they are down.

“That is like a higher calling. In 2019, I won at VGMA and since then I’ve not won until this year. The years I hadn’t won, I was still going hard. I just kept going, just kept dropping music. It is funny when those things happen, I always come back with a smash,” she stated.

Many fans of King Promise heaved a sigh of relief after winning the Afrobeat/Afro Pop Artiste of the Year award and Album of the Year at this year’s VGMAs which came off at the Grand Arena of Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on Saturday, May 6.

King Promise had always been a favourite contender but unfortunately, he has not been lucky to win any category since 2019 but the “curse” has been broken this year.

Sarkodie, King Promise were invited to Grammys but… – Dentaa https://www.adomonline.com/sarkodie-king-promise-were-invited-to-grammys-but-dentaa/ Mon, 13 Feb 2023 15:17:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2215994 The Founder of GUBA Enterprise, Lady Dentaa Amoateng MBE, has disclosed that apart from Stonebwoy, KiDi and Edem, two other Ghanaian artistes were invited to the 65th Grammy Awards.

According to her, Sarkodie and King Promise who were also invited could not make it to the ceremony which took place on February 5, 2023, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, USA.

Speaking to Sammy Forson on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, she said she requested that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Recording Academy of the Grammy Awards, Harvey Mason Jnr. invites some Ghanaian artistes.

This was after selling him the African Nominees Brunch idea and subsequently inviting him as a special guest.

“I was like ‘Harvey, can I get invites to some of these African artistes because there are not many Ghanaians that get the opportunity to be at the Grammys so if I am able to go I wanna extend that to my African brothers and sisters?’” she said.

She added when the CEO accepted the request she had to decide who to invite.

“At that time it was a bit crazy because I was like ‘okay who do you get?’ Because I’d got only like three invitations that have been given. And how do you invite the right and key people and I had to think about okay who is in America right now,” she noted.

Dentaa stated she also considered the possibility of the artistes having visas at that time to attend the programme.

“I knew that Stonebwoy was in the US., KiDi was planning on going to the US, Edem was also in the US. We did extend an invitation to Sarkodie but he wasn’t able to make it. King Promise wasn’t able to make it. But for me I really wanted to make sure that we had a good representation at this year’s Grammy Awards,” she further disclosed.

Assessing the impact of the presence of the Ghanaian and African acts at the event, Dentaa said it was a platform for them to network.

Her African Nominees Brunch which was held on the eve of the Grammy Awards in California for the African nominees in the Grammys had a lot of the top record labels in the world present to network with the artistes.

She promised that the African Nominees Brunch will be held again next year and hoped more artistes including the females would also will get the chance to be represented.

The event has been scheduled to take place at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, but some fans are threatening to boycott the show.

The issue follows King Promise’s inability to show up when he was billed to perform at the recently-held Wizkid Live concert at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Oh Yeah hitmaker took to his social media pages, shortly after Wizkid pleaded with his fans for not showing up, saying:

“Performing for my fans is my topmost priority. I don’t take the love and support you show me for granted. What I will never do it to compromise your safety no matter how much I’m paid for a show. It’s your unflinching support that makes me who I am. I profusely apologise for last night’s mishap. I promise to make it up to you really soon. God Bless and keep you safe. Love you.”

But some angry fans are still asking King Promise to cancel the show, especially when Stonebwoy is also holding his Bhim Concert at the Grand Arena on the same day.

Meanwhile, music producer Killbeatz, reacting to a fan who promised to attend Stonebwoy’s show over his had this to say, “no worry! You can go to Stonebwoy’s show! Even if 3 people show up to Promiseland, we will perform for them. [sic]”

King Promise opens up on relationship with Wizkid [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/king-promise-opens-up-on-relationship-with-wizkid-video/ Tue, 20 Dec 2022 18:28:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2198215 Popular singer and songwriter, Gregory Bortey Newman, known in showbiz circles as King Promise, says Nigerian singer Wizkid is not his boss but his long-time friend.

According to the Ginger hitmaker, they have been friends before he [King Promise] saw his breakthrough in the music scene.

In an interview with Doreen Avio on Daybreak Hitz, King Promise said, “First of all, he [Wizkid] is not my boss. He is a friend.”

This comes as a response to entertainment writer and pundit, Kwame Dadzie, who asserted that Wizkid is King Promise’s boss —and thus, he [King Promise] refused to perform at the Wizkid Live in Accra concert because his boss [Wizkid] did not.

This follows King Promise’s failure to perform at the event held at the Accra Sports Stadium on December 10.

The headliner of the event, Wizkid, could not perform due to “safety” and “production issues”.

Shortly after the event, King Promise, in a statement, wrote that he would not compromise the safety of his fans, even though he had been paid to perform at an event —and that was his reason for not being able to perform.

In the same statement, he apologized for not being present on stage to perform as advertised.

But the ’10 Toes’ singer’s apology did not sit well with some fans and industry players.

Among the industry players was Kwame Dadzie, who in a tweet posted on December 11, registered his displeasure at King Promise for not performing at the event.

He went on to say that King Promise insulted other artistes like Darkovibes, and Gyakie, who felt safe and performed at the same show that was purported to have lacked safety protocols and sufficient production arrangements.

According to Kwame Dadzie, King Promise’s reason for not performing was just an excuse.

Speaking on Hitz FM on Monday, Kwame Dadzie, in his quest to find answers from King Promise, posed a question to the singer: “Was he coming on stage to fire teargas? Does he not think his statement wreaks of betrayal of his Ghanaian people, just to pay allegiance to his boss Wizkid?”

In response to Kwame Dadzie, King Promise said: “My allegiance has always been to Ghanaians, and everyone knows that.

“You guys saw my tour right? I had the Ghana flag with me every day. I am an ambassador for my people to the world. I don’t think anybody can doubt the fact I show ‘Ghana to the World’ everywhere I go.”

As part of proving his loyalty to his fans, the Carry Me Go singer said: “On my birthday, I spent it with my fans. I could have been with my family. I also did a free show and performed for my fans just to let them know that I appreciate you guys for how far you’ve brought me.”

He concluded by saying that his inability to perform at certain events does not necessarily mean he disrespects his fans.

He went on to reveal that he will disclose the actual reason he wasn’t able to perform at the Wizkid Live in Accra concert when the time is right.

King Promise’s forthcoming event, Promise Land, is slated for December 23, happening at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.

I wasn’t invited to Criss Waddle’s concert – King Promise [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/i-wasnt-invited-to-criss-waddles-concert-king-promise-video/ Tue, 20 Dec 2022 18:20:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2198166 Musician, King Promise has revealed the reason he wasn’t present at Criss Waddle and Medikal’s AMG Connect Concert.

According to King Promise, he didn’t receive any formal invitation from Criss Waddle or his team to attend the event.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz with Doreen Avio, King Promise said: “I wasn’t invited to the event. And even if I was, I had other engagements yesterday. I try to be everywhere I can. But I hope the event went well.”

His comment comes after the Bie Gya rapper, in series of posts on Snapchat, expressed his disappointment in not seeing King Promise and R2bees at his concert on Saturday, 17th December 2022.

A few hours after videos of King Promise and R2bees performing at Gyakie’s Party Live with Gyakie, held on Friday, 16th December 2022, surfaced online, Criss Waddle took to social media to vent, accusing the artistes of ignoring his concert, AMG Connect Concert.

Criss Waddle believes he deserved some level of support from the aforementioned artistes considering their longstanding relationship, spanning over two decades.

But Criss Waddle laid more of the blame at the feet of King Promise’s manager, Ohene Faruku.

According to the Ayi hitmaker, King Promise’s absence at the AMG Connect Concert was engineered by his manager, though he (Criss Waddle) had a good relationship with the artiste.

The rapper also accused Gomi, R2bees’ manager, of not making the necessary arrangements for the duo to offer some support to him at his concert.

King Promise reacts to Samini’s ‘wack’ Ghana World Cup theme song comment https://www.adomonline.com/king-promise-reacts-to-saminis-wack-ghana-world-cup-theme-song-comment/ Mon, 21 Nov 2022 15:29:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2186348 Ghanaian singer King Promise has finally reacted to series of tweets made by colleague musician Samini, who has been mocking the official World Cup theme song for Ghana.

King Promise tweeted, “long live the Idols, may they never become our rivals”, after Samini voiced out his opinion concerning the official Black Stars song outdoored by the Ghana Football Association.

According to King Promise, he is shocked by Samini’s gesture because he respects him as an idol in Ghana’s creative space.

Interestingly, the official song that was outdoored by the GFA was composed by the Kentos Band in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, dubbed ‘Osey’.

According to Samini, the ‘Osey’ song, which was launched at the Sky Bar 25 and witnessed by former Black Star players, is wack and not up to standard.

But Samini’s tweet has also sparked speculations as some fans believe he is indirectly jabbing King Promise, who has equally outdoored another official song following the backlash of ‘Osey’.

Earlier, King Promise collaborated with the Ghana Football Association, the sports governing body, to release an official song, Black Stars (Bring Back The Love), for Ghana ahead of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Apparently, when fans lambasted Samini for putting out such, Samini reiterated his tweet, adding that, it is just an opinion, and he stands by it.

King Promise, feeling sad, about the whole incident said he wonders why his idol has decided to kick against the song.

He wrote on Twitter, “Idols become Rivals… Sad” [SIC].

In another tweet, King Promise prayed he never holds a grudge with Samini.

Meanwhile, Samini has gone ahead to release a new song for the World Cup titled, ‘WinAfricaWin’ to silence critics.

According to him, although there are several avenues that have the tendencies to push songs far, TikTok is phenomenal.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, he said he will be surprised if music marketers ignore the significance of TikTok when it comes to promotion lately.

“My target audience is all around the world. It’s not vague as someone might think. TikTok is phenomenal, you must be a fool not to accept that. It’s part of the whole marketing process right now.”

He said TikTok contributes to how a song may go viral across the globe.

“We have thrived without it, and it doesn’t mean that’s the only way, but I acknowledge that it’s also a contributing factor for music going crazy because it gets things viral.”

Talking about his regrets in life, King Promise said: “I don’t live to regret… anything that happens happens. I take my Ls as lessons.”

Kuami Eugene, King Promise send strong message to lookalikes https://www.adomonline.com/kuami-eugene-king-promise-send-strong-message-to-lookalikes/ Sat, 18 Jun 2022 13:05:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2127442 Musicians Kuami Eugene and King Promise have warned their lookalikes to desist from performing under the brand names.

Social media has been flooded with videos of the respective lookalikes performing hit songs of the artistes, and even sharing a stage at events.

The recent video is of Kuami Eugene and King Promise’s lookalikes performing in the streets of Accra during an activation exercise.

In reaction, the original artistes have finally voiced out their displeasure following series of advice from industry stakeholders to bring their lookalikes to order.

While admitting that imitation is the highest form of flattery, Kuami Eugene, however, registered his displeasure.

He believes the impersonation is diluting his good music, and the fact that his lookalike charges for performances just makes him cringe.

“It’s just beautiful to have almost every young boy growing up wanting to be like you. People want to sound like me, dress like me but the only problem is when people start going in for money and impersonate me. When someone goes out there to make money off your hard work or sweat, that’s when it’s illegal,” he stated in an interview on YFM .

Speaking on same topic, artiste King Promise shared in Kuami Eugene’s sentiments, warning his lookalikes to watch out.

He indicated that he was initially unconcerned when his lookalikes started sprouting and attaining fame, but he is uncomfortable with the monetary values placed on them.

He described as funny those who engage impersonators in deals to perform at their events.

‘Disrespect from KillBeatz and King Promise’s team got me angry’ – 3Music CEO https://www.adomonline.com/disrespect-from-killbeatz-and-king-promises-team-got-me-angry-3music-ceo/ Tue, 11 Jan 2022 13:27:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2066018 The festive season was one to remember with a lot of events happening all over the country.

One of the debut events that was highly anticipated by patrons from the country and the diaspora was the Wildaland concert hosted by 3Music boss, Sadiq Abdulai Abu.

However, the event was not devoid of controversies as Sadiq revealed that singer, King Promise and his team did not treat him fairly during preparations for the event.

He explained that the development fueled his reason to ban King Promise’s contents from the 3Music platform. Sadiq said he is dissociating himself from the ‘Slow Down’ hitmaker.

MORE:

“It was a disrespect from KillBeatz and the whole King Promise team and everything that got me off,” he said.

In an interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, Sadiq revealed that King Promise and his team, after an initial back-and-forth negotiation over his performance at the Wildaland concert, demanded full payment before any official announcement with regard to his participation in the gig.

“They mentioned a particular amount. Then we also gave them a counter check and we approved it. They came back with another request for instance that I shut down. I was like, no. This is happening in Accra. So the request on cars. They wanted a number of V8s or cars.”

Sadiq Abdulai explained that the inconsistency on the part of King Promise’s team led to some miscommunication.

“At a certain level, you need to give people the kind of respect. The next minute I hear you (King Promise) going about, talking about industry people and how they don’t enable, they don’t do these things and stuff like that, and we go back to some of the treatment that you do to some of these people. Stop.

“I put it out. In 2022, I’m not going to tolerate any of those from any of these talents anymore.”

Set in the heart of the blooming wilderness of the Shai Hills Forest Reserve, Wildaland was a two-day music and entertainment lifestyle festival that featured performances from notable Ghanaian, African and global artistes.
