The committee will be responsible for determining the salaries of all public sector workers, including the President, to bring consistency and transparency to the nation’s wage structure.

Speaking at a meeting with Organised Labour on Thursday, February 20, Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring fair and equitable wages across all categories of public sector employees.

He acknowledged longstanding concerns over pay discrepancies and assured labour representatives that the government was prepared to take decisive action to address the issue.

According to him, the Emolument Committee’s formation aims to resolve confusion and dissatisfaction surrounding salary structures in Ghana’s public service. He emphasized that its work would help streamline wages and ensure fairness for all.

“We are proposing an independent Emolument Committee that would set the incomes for everybody—from the President down to the ordinary labourer. We are prepared to walk this journey with you. Once the economy moves in the direction we are all hoping for, if you suggest 35 percent, I will support you because it will affect my pay too,” Mahama stated.

He further expressed his willingness to collaborate with labour unions to ensure the committee effectively fulfills its mandate.

Tullow Chairman meets Mahama, reaffirms strong partnership https://www.adomonline.com/tullow-chairman-meets-mahama-reaffirms-strong-partnership/ Fri, 21 Feb 2025 06:59:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2507075 Tullow Plc Board Chairman, Phuthuma Nhleko, has reaffirmed the company’s strong commitment to Ghana’s energy sector, emphasizing its nearly two-decade-long partnership with the country.

In a recent meeting with President John Mahama, Nhleko reiterated Tullow’s dedication to strengthening its collaboration with Ghana, stressing the need to harness the nation’s oil and gas resources efficiently, sustainably, and with environmental responsibility.

As the lead operator of Ghana’s key oil fields—Jubilee and TEN—Tullow and its partners have invested over $19 billion in the sector since inception, contributing more than $6 billion in revenue to the Ghanaian government.

During the meeting, Nhleko introduced Richard Miller, Tullow’s interim Group CEO, to the President, following the recent announcement of former CEO Rahul Dhir’s departure after four years. He assured the President of Tullow’s commitment to business continuity and stability as it advances its strategy.

Nhleko also underscored the significant potential of gas as a driver of economic growth and revenue generation, emphasizing the need for a conducive business environment to strengthen investor confidence and foster long-term collaboration.

President Mahama, in response, acknowledged the vital role of the energy sector in Ghana’s economic development. He stressed the importance of gas to Ghana’s economy and the urgent need for an economic reset to create a business-friendly environment that encourages investment.

Tullow Ghana’s Managing Director, Jean-Medard Madama, and Deputy Managing Director, Cynthia Lumor, were part of the Tullow delegation that met with the President.

Also in attendance were Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor; Acting CEO of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Kwame Ntow Amoah; Presidential Advisor and Special Aide, Joyce Bawa Mogtari; and Energy Ministry Technical Advisor, Ishmael Ackah.

Beyond its economic contributions, Tullow continues to invest in local communities. The company has committed $10 million to improving educational infrastructure in 15 senior secondary schools over five years.

Together with its partners, Tullow also supports coastal livelihoods through initiatives such as the Fisherman’s Anchor Project, which creates job opportunities for fisherfolk in the Western Region.

In addition, the company recently commenced a 4D seismic survey across the Jubilee and TEN fields—an essential step in enhancing drilling activities in 2025 and beyond.

The survey, which began in January 2025, is expected to last approximately 45 days, concluding in March 2025. The interpretation of the acquired data will help identify optimal areas for future drilling, ensuring sustainable and efficient resource development.

We’ll pay you better once the economy improves – Mahama to public sector workers https://www.adomonline.com/well-pay-you-better-once-the-economy-improves-mahama-to-public-sector-workers/ Thu, 20 Feb 2025 20:26:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2506954 President John Dramani Mahama has promised higher salaries for public sector workers if the economy recovers in the coming year.

According to him, there is a need for patience and collective effort in rebuilding the economy.

The President made this statement on Thursday during the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment.

Following a successful negotiation, the government announced a 10% increase in the base pay for public sector workers.

Addressing the labour unions, the President acknowledged the difficulties workers face but stressed the need for financial discipline.

“Let’s temper our demands for this year. Once we recover from these challenges, we will set realistic targets to bring down inflation, which will lower the cost of living. We will focus on growing the economy to improve things. Once the economy expands, we will share the benefits accordingly,” he said.

He added, “I am simply appealing to you to reach an agreement on this matter so that we can use this year as a period of correction. After we have made the necessary adjustments, we will see how the economy progresses. Once it moves in the direction we all hope for, and if we have an Independent Emoluments Committee, and if you propose a 35% increase, I will support it, as it will affect my pay too,” he assured.

While noting that workers’ demands are valid, he said the economic situation requires sacrifices from all sectors, including the government.

“We can behave like the ostrich and hide our heads in the sand and let the economy crash, but then what effect would it have on Ghanaian households and everybody?” he asked.

Mahama declares assets, sets March 31 deadline for public officials https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-declares-assets-sets-march-31-deadline-for-public-officials/ Tue, 18 Feb 2025 11:27:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2505785

President John Dramani Mahama has publicly declared his assets in line with Article 286 of Ghana’s Constitution, submitting his completed forms to the Auditor-General.

He has also directed all public office holders and appointees to declare their assets by March 31, 2025, warning that failure to comply will result in severe sanctions, including removal from office.

This initiative is part of his commitment to fighting corruption and promoting transparency in governance.

Article 286 mandates public officials to declare their assets and liabilities before assuming office, at the end of every four-year term, and upon leaving office.

The process aims to deter corruption and assure the public of the integrity of government officials.

The Auditor-General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, and his team were present at the Presidency to receive the forms, symbolizing the President’s commitment to institutional integrity.

Speaking at the event, President Mahama emphasized the importance of proactive measures against corruption.

“I have just performed a simple but very important act of presenting my completed asset declaration forms to the Auditor-General as required by Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution and the Public Office Holders (Declaration of Assets and Disqualification) Act, 1996 (Act 550). In times past, I would have privately presented this to the Auditor-General, but I have chosen to do so publicly to inject openness and transparency into the process. I believe that if earnestly curated and enforced, the asset declaration process can become a sustainable tool for tackling corruption,” he stated.

The President’s directive seeks to ensure accountability among public officials and prevent corruption before it occurs, rather than spending resources to combat it later.

Discontinuing the IMF programme would be unwise – Prof Bokpin https://www.adomonline.com/discontinuing-the-imf-programme-would-be-unwise-prof-bokpin/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 14:03:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2505466 A professor of finance and economics at the University of Ghana, Prof Godfred Bokpin, says it will be bad for the economy if the government decides to discontinue the current International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated that his administration has no immediate plans to extend Ghana’s ongoing $3 billion Extended Credit Facility agreement with the IMF.

Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg TV at the Munich Security Conference, he stressed that his government remains committed to executing the existing programme without seeking an extension.

Addressing the possibility of future modifications, President Mahama acknowledged that an extension could be considered if necessary but insisted that the current focus was on implementing the agreed measures.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show during a discussion on the economy, Prof Godfred Bopkin said, “To think about it that we are exiting the programme in May 2026 conveys considerable risk to the market,” he noted.

Prof Bopkin highlighted that the original financial programme, which aimed to restore economic balance, was designed with a follow-up extension or successor plan in mind. However, given the changing circumstances, he acknowledged that the nation now finds itself needing to adjust the course.

“What that will mean is that we have to then start another programme. If you look at the original programme, the programme was designed with an extension or immediate or a successor right after,” he explained

Prof Bopkin further estimated that it could take between three and four years before the country can access the international capital markets again. This delay, he noted, is a necessary period of rebuilding and stabilizing the economy.

“Remember that we are not able to go to the international capital market per the original programme until 2027,” he added.

The government had previously restructured its debt to avoid default, but the lengthy and complex process of recovery means that the nation will need time to rebuild its financial standing.

“The World Bank was advising us…that’s just consistent with the period,” Prof Bokpin added.

“Once you restructure your debt with the manner that ours took, we are looking at over 3-4 years before the market will receive you favourably,” he concluded.

Mahama urges quick establishment of key African Financial Institutions https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-urges-quick-establishment-of-key-african-financial-institutions/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 11:15:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2505242 President John Mahama has called for the swift establishment of key financial institutions to accelerate Africa’s economic integration and reduce reliance on foreign aid.

Speaking as the Champion of African Union Financial Institutions at the Heads of State and Government breakfast dialogue at the AU Commission headquarters in Addis Ababa, Mahama emphasized the need to fast-track the creation of an African Central Bank, an African Investment Bank, an African Monetary Fund, and a Pan-African Stock Exchange.

He highlighted the African Central Bank’s critical role in fostering economic cooperation by introducing a common monetary policy and a single African currency.

“By mobilizing resources, facilitating trade, and financing infrastructure projects, these institutions can reduce dependence on external aid and create a self-sustaining economic ecosystem for Africa. The African Central Bank is expected to establish a single African currency, reducing exchange rate risks and enhancing investment flows across the continent,” Mahama stated.

Progress on the African Monetary Institute

President Mahama also revealed advancements in establishing the African Monetary Institute (AMI), which will serve as a precursor to the African Central Bank.

“I am pleased to inform you that the ministers of finance and central bank governors have endorsed the draft statute of the African Monetary Institute (AMI) through the specialized technical committee on finance, monetary affairs, economic planning, and integration. The AMI will conduct essential preparatory work, including technical and legal assessments, while ensuring the implementation of macroeconomic convergence criteria.”

Role of Key Financial Institutions

The African Investment Bank (AIB) is expected to mobilize resources from African and global capital markets to finance investment projects across the continent, driving economic growth and regional integration.

Meanwhile, the African Monetary Fund (AMF) will work to eliminate trade restrictions, enhance monetary integration, and provide financial assistance to AU member states.

“The Fund will prioritize regional macroeconomic objectives in its lending policies while providing financial support to AU member states,” he noted.

Mahama also underscored progress toward establishing a Pan-African Stock Exchange, which aims to integrate capital markets and improve investment flows within Africa.

“The Pan-African Stock Exchange will integrate capital markets, making it easier for businesses to raise capital while enhancing liquidity, promoting intra-African investments, and providing alternative financing mechanisms for governments and the private sector. Progress is being made, with the Commission and the African Securities Exchanges Association working on the Exchange’s linkages project,” he added.

The OSP is mandated to investigate and prosecute corruption-related offences, recover unlawfully acquired assets, and implement measures to prevent corruption.

However, following the submission of the ORAL report to the President on Monday, February 10, Mr. Kpebu revealed that his work with the team exposed significant shortcomings in the law.

He contrasted the OSP’s framework with the ORAL initiative, which he described as a “masterstroke,” highlighting systemic issues that hinder the effectiveness of the Special Prosecutor’s office.

“I have seen the deficiencies in the OSP law. It gives the Special Prosecutor too much power. Every petition lands on his desk, and he alone decides whether to investigate. The rest of his directors don’t see it. That must change,” he told Channel One News.

Martin Kpebu further noted that the excessive control vested in the Special Prosecutor has contributed to the office’s limited impact, stressing that reforms should ensure greater transparency and shared decision-making among OSP directors.

He urged the President to prioritize amending the OSP law to address these critical gaps and enhance its effectiveness in fighting corruption.

The president of the association, Mr. Kofi Asante, emphasized that Dr. Brown has been an integral part of the industry and is well-positioned to meet expectations in his new role.

About Dr. Hugh Brown

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of an eight-member Constitutional Review Committee on January 30, Mahama highlighted the importance of constitutional evolution, noting that governance structures must adapt to the rapidly changing global landscape.

He dismissed the perception that constitutional reform signifies failure, framing it instead as a marker of progress and growth in democratic systems.

“The call for constitutional reforms is not an admission of failure but a recognition of progress—an acknowledgment that our democracy must be dynamic, responsive, and attuned to the needs of our people,” he stated.

The President pointed to Ghana’s history of constitutional refinement, recalling the reform efforts initiated by the late President John Evans Atta Mills in 2010.

He described those efforts as evidence of the nation’s ongoing commitment to evolving its democratic institutions.

The newly formed Constitutional Review Committee has been tasked with reviewing key areas of the constitution to ensure it aligns with Ghana’s current governance and societal needs.

“This is not the first time we have sought to refine our constitution. These efforts show our dedication to improving governance and ensuring that the Constitution serves the best interests of all Ghanaians,” Mahama noted.

He called on the President to fulfill his commitments regarding issues such as “galamsey fraud,” LGBTQ rights, and combating corruption to reflect the trust placed in him by voters.

Most Rev. Kwofie made this appeal during a sermon (Homily) at the Holy Mass, which marked the climax of the 80th Anniversary Celebrations of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Kpehe, Accra, on Sunday.

The celebration was held under the theme: “Helping Children to Seek Christ from Discovery to Discipleship.”

Most Rev. Kwofie stated that the outcome of the 2024 general election was a testament to the “deep confidence” the people had in the President to put the country on the path to growth and prosperity.

“We voted for you because of what you said on LGBTQ. We are indeed watching you,” he said, adding, “do not disappoint us.”

The Archbishop expressed concern about the rate at which corruption is destroying the country and charged leaders to live by example and “sacrifice their lives as ransom for the people.”

“Let your thoughts and actions be consistent with the titles you hold. Ghana should be built on hard work and good conscience,” he added.

Mr. Francis-Xavier Sosu, Member of Parliament for Madina, speaking on behalf of President Mahama, assured the Church that the President would fulfill the promises he made to the people of Ghana.

“President Mahama will not disappoint the Church. The National Democratic Congress will not disappoint the people of Ghana,” he said.

Mr. Sosu emphasized that the Government’s goal of resetting the country is a shared responsibility and called on citizens to contribute in their respective fields to help realize the Ghanaian dream.

Founded in 1945 with just 25 parishioners, St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Kpehe, Accra, has grown to include over 20 societies over the past eight decades.

The church’s first Holy Mass was celebrated in 1945 at Accra New Town, at the former site of West Africa Secondary School, by Reverend Father Gerhard Fini.

The current Parish Priest, Very Rev. Fr. Casmir Gosu, assumed leadership in 2020, with Rev. Fr. Isaac Amoateng Gyasi serving as his assistant until 2024, when he was replaced by Rev. Fr. Derrick Senyo Abbey.

AU’s over-reliance on external funding undermines independence – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/aus-over-reliance-on-external-funding-undermines-independence-mahama/ Mon, 27 Jan 2025 12:24:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2497473 President John Dramani Mahama has voiced concerns over the African Union’s (AU) reliance on external funding, warning that it undermines the organization’s ability to set its own agenda and effectively address the continent’s challenges.

Speaking at the opening session of the AU retreat on institutional reforms in Nairobi, Kenya, President Mahama stressed the urgent need for financial independence.

He called for the swift implementation of the Kigali Decision on Financing the Union, adopted at the 2016 AU Summit in Rwanda.

The resolution aims to establish a reliable and predictable funding mechanism for the AU, reducing its dependence on external donors.

“Over-reliance on external partners compromises the AU’s independence and its ability to set its own agenda. The implementation of the Kigali decision on financing the union must be expedited to ensure financial autonomy,” Mahama stated.

The retreat, focused on key issues such as terrorism, trade agreements, and sustainable financing, aims to address critical challenges facing the AU.

President Mahama also emphasized the importance of accountability, transparency, and value for money in the AU’s operations.

“We must adopt mechanisms that prioritize accountability and ensure every resource is maximized for the benefit of the African people,” he said.

In addition to financial reforms, Mahama advocated for greater inclusion of women and youth in leadership roles, citing Africa’s youthful population as a critical resource.

“Africa’s future lies in its youth. Over 60% of our population is under the age of 25, yet their voices are largely absent in policymaking,” he noted.

Highlighting his own example of appointing Ghana’s first female Vice President, Mahama urged AU member states to institutionalize frameworks that empower young people and women to lead at all levels of governance.

The retreat serves as a platform for AU leaders to discuss and implement strategies that will strengthen the union’s ability to address the pressing needs of the continent effectively.

Concerned NDC Disability Desk appeals to Mahama for inclusion in key appointments https://www.adomonline.com/concerned-ndc-disability-desk-appeals-to-mahama-for-inclusion-in-key-appointments/ Fri, 24 Jan 2025 09:52:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2496615 The Concerned NDC Disability Desk has called on President John Dramani Mahama to fulfill his campaign promise of ensuring the inclusion of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in key positions within his administration.

The group expressed disappointment, highlighting the absence of PWDs in the 42 ministerial appointments announced so far, out of the planned 60.

“If you look at the 42 appointments made so far, more than 50% of the expected 60 ministerial slots have been filled, and the cabinet—Ghana’s highest decision-making body—has already been formed,” the group told Citi News.

They pointed out that while women have been included in the cabinet, PWDs remain excluded, noting that this contradicts the principles of the Affirmative Action Law, which is meant to safeguard the rights and representation of women and the disabled.

The group urged President Mahama to address their concerns in the remaining appointments, emphasizing the need for representation to ensure a truly inclusive government.

Speaking after swearing in the first batch of ministers at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, January 22, President Mahama assured, “We have put in short-term measures to ensure that our children have adequate food, so they can continue their education without interruption.”

He noted that while these interim steps are critical, his government is also working on long-term solutions to address the issue comprehensively.

“These short-term measures will sustain our children in school as we strategize on streamlining the food supply system,” he explained.

Mahama further disclosed that his administration is tackling significant debts inherited from the previous government, including arrears owed to schools since 2021.

“We are preparing to pay off these debts to stabilize the education sector,” he added.

The food shortage issue was highlighted earlier this month by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), who reported inadequate food supplies and unpaid feeding fees. Some schools had asked parents to provide food for their children upon resumption.

President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the challenges, ensuring that no student is deprived of education due to food shortages.

The appeal was made during the President’s visit to the first Akwasidae Festival of the year in Kumasi, where he was warmly received by traditional leaders and residents.

Speaking on behalf of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, called on the President to ensure that development projects across the Ashanti Kingdom, including those in Mampong, are given top priority.

“You shall not let us down on all the ongoing developmental projects within the kingdom—not only in Kumasi but across the rest of the kingdom, like your own brother’s kingdom, Mampong,” Daasebre Osei Bonsu II stated.

The Mamponghene also commended President Mahama for his efforts to streamline governance by reducing the number of ministerial appointments. He encouraged the President to ensure that key officials responsible for development remain focused on addressing the needs of the Ashanti Region.

“Asanteman should always be number one because now, you are our precious president of Mother Ghana,” he added.

President Mahama, who used the occasion to express gratitude to the Asanteman Council for their support during the 2024 elections, reassured the gathering of his commitment to equitable development. He acknowledged the region’s significant contribution to his electoral victory and pledged to see all ongoing and future projects through to completion.

Kekeli Muslim Community opposes Mohammed Abdul-Salam’s NLA appointment https://www.adomonline.com/kekeli-muslim-community-opposes-mohammed-abdul-salams-nla-appointment/ Sun, 19 Jan 2025 13:51:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2494551 The Kekeli Muslim Community in Ghana has raised concerns over the appointment of Mohammed Abdul-Salam as Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Lottery Authority (NLA).

On January 15, President John Mahama appointed the former Northern Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the role. However, the Muslim community expressed apprehension in a press release, citing Islamic teachings that prohibit gambling, betting, and lottery activities.

“Intoxicants and games of chance are only an infamy of Satan’s handiwork. Leave it aside that you may succeed” (Quran 5:90), the statement emphasized.

Additionally, the community referenced a hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), which condemns games of chance, describing such acts as disobedience to Allah.

The community respectfully urged President Mahama to reconsider the appointment, stating, “This decision appears to be a direct challenge to Islamic principles and may undermine the goodwill you have fostered among the Muslim community.” They also called on Muslim leaders and clerics to urgently engage with the president to address the issue, emphasizing that reversing the appointment would uphold Islamic values and protect the youth from being influenced to engage in gambling activities.

In response to the criticism, Mr. Abdul-Salam defended his acceptance of the position, asserting that his role reflects Ghana’s secular governance structure.

“I am a practising Muslim. I’m not just a Muslim; I am a practising Muslim, but I’m not a fanatic leader. Neither am I an extremist,” he said.

The Kekeli Muslim Community concluded its statement by appealing to President Mahama to act swiftly, emphasizing that reconsidering the appointment would strengthen trust and cooperation between the Muslim community and the government.

Mahama to engage Asantehene on Jan. 19 over Bawku conflict https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-to-engage-asantehene-on-jan-19-over-bawku-conflict/ Wed, 15 Jan 2025 12:27:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2493216 President John Mahama is set to visit the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, this weekend as part of his ongoing mediation efforts to secure lasting peace in Bawku in the Upper East Region.

President John Dramani Mahama undertook a critical peace-building mission to Bawku and Nalerigu on Tuesday, January 14.

The visit underscored the President’s unwavering commitment to resolving the protracted conflict in Bawku, which has plagued the region for decades.

During his visit to the overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, President Mahama reiterated his government’s dedication to prioritizing peace.

“I just came to appeal to him and his subjects to exercise restraint and patience and trust that we will resolve this matter amicably. So, I’m just appealing to my father that they should exercise patience while I set up the government,” he said.

He also recalled his last briefing with former President Akufo-Addo just before he ended his tenure, highlighting some mediation efforts that were undertaken.

“In my last briefing with Nana Akufo-Addo, before he left office, he briefed me about some mediation efforts that they were undertaking. I wish to be able to discuss it with him and see how we can continue that effort. I know that he and the late Yagbonwura and Otumfuo were the ones who solved the Dagbon problem,” he recalled.

President Mahama emphasized the need to visit the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on January 19, since the Asantehene played an essential role in resolving the Dagbon conflict.

“Nana Addo gave me a hint that Otumfuo has been playing some role, and so I’m supposed to be with Otumfuo on the 19th of this month. So, when I go, it is one of the issues I will discuss with him. Whatever comes out of it, I will inform my father [Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II],” he concluded.

Catholic Bishops urge Mahama to fast-track Anti-LGBT+ Bill https://www.adomonline.com/catholic-bishops-urge-mahama-to-fast-track-anti-lgbt-bill/ Wed, 15 Jan 2025 09:15:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2493073 The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has urged the government, led by President John Dramani Mahama, to swiftly reintroduce the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, widely known as the anti-LGBT bill, to ensure its prompt passage into law.

During a meeting on Tuesday, January 14, President Mahama proposed that a government-sponsored version of the bill would be more effective than the existing Private Member’s Bill.

He noted that such an approach would facilitate broader consultation and foster national consensus on the issue.

President Mahama also stressed the need to revise school curriculums to include moral and cultural education that reinforces Ghanaian and African values among children.

Speaking at the meeting, Most Reverend Matthew Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, urged the government to act decisively on the matter.

“What we want is for the bill to be made into law. That does not mean it cannot also be taught in schools once it becomes law. Many of our laws are incorporated into school curriculums through civic education and other subjects.

“The fact that it should be taught does not negate the need for it to become law. Ghanaians are overwhelmingly in favor of this, and we do not want technical language to undermine the will of the people,” Reverend Gyamfi stated.

The Bishops reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for the protection of Ghanaian family values and called on the government to prioritize the swift enactment of the bill.

National Peace Council speaks on Mahama’s visit to Bawku https://www.adomonline.com/national-peace-council-speaks-on-mahamas-visit-to-bawku/ Wed, 15 Jan 2025 06:40:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2493018 The Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council has emphasised the significance of President John Mahama’s recent visit to Bawku, describing it as a critical step toward restoring peace in the conflict-ridden area.

Dr. George Amoh speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, highlighted the role of trust and leadership in resolving the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy dispute.

“The issue of trust is critical in peacebuilding, and I think that has been the biggest challenge in the Bawku crisis,” Dr Amoh stated.

He noted that the deep-seated mistrust between factions has complicated efforts to find a sustainable resolution.

“Even when people mean well, the level of distrust is so significant that intentions are often misunderstood or ignored.”

President Mahama’s visit, according to Dr Amoh, sends a strong signal to the people of Bawku and the nation at large.

“In peacebuilding, signals are very important, and his presence there, the words he’s spoken, are very critical,” he said.

Dr Amoh commended the former President for making Bawku one of his priority destinations outside Accra.

“This is his first trip outside of Accra, apart from Pomadze, where he joined the Ahmadiyya community last week. Going to Bawku is very significant. He has met the Bawku Naba, and I believe he will also meet the Nayiri, which is very critical,” he noted.

The Executive Secretary explained that the National Peace Council has been consistent in promoting coexistence and dialogue as essential tools for peace.

“If you look at the statement we issued, we are trying to emphasise the need for us to coexist and promote peace. Without peace, no development can stand, so we are in search of peace,” he said.

Dr. Amoh also drew parallels to other regions, citing Ejura as an example of a community that has faced challenges with unrest.

He urged leaders to focus on fostering trust and ensuring that appointees tasked with handling sensitive conflicts are seen as neutral and unifying.

Former Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul’s recent remarks on trust were echoed by Dr Amoh, who stressed the importance of building credibility among stakeholders in Bawku.

“Trust has been damaged to the extent that even if you mean well, people do not give your actions the attention they deserve. This is why leaders need to be deliberate about restoring faith and confidence,” he said.

Dr Amoh called on all stakeholders, including political leaders, traditional authorities, and civil society groups, to work collaboratively toward peace in Bawku.

He reiterated the Peace Council’s commitment to supporting dialogue and reconciliation efforts.

“President Mahama’s visit is a step in the right direction, but we need sustained efforts and consistent engagement to rebuild trust and ensure peace,” he concluded.

The visit comes against the backdrop of escalating violence in Bawku, which has claimed lives and displaced many residents.

The conflict, rooted in a chieftaincy dispute, continues to challenge the region’s stability and development.

Mahama meets Mamprugu King over Bawku chieftaincy stalemate https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-meets-mamprugu-king-over-bawku-chieftaincy-stalemate/ Wed, 15 Jan 2025 06:37:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2493016 On Tuesday, January 14, President John Mahama held a closed-door meeting with the King of Mamprugu, Naa Bohaga Abdulai Mahami Sheriga II, at the overlord’s palace in Nalerigu.

The brief meeting, which lasted about 30 minutes, was private and restricted. However, a member of the President’s delegation shared some details with JoyNews’ regional correspondent.

“After the usual protocol, the President expressed his gratitude to the overlord for his electoral support and appealed for his assistance in bringing lasting peace to Bawku,” the source disclosed.

President Mahama stressed the importance of peace and informed the Mamprugu King of his intention to invite him to Accra soon for further discussions on restoring law and order.

Before arriving in Nalerigu, the former President had visited Bawku, where he held similar meetings with traditional authorities. These visits were in response to escalating incidents of violence along key roads in the region.

Escalating Violence in the Region

President Mahama’s visits come amidst increasing tit-for-tat attacks by armed groups along the Nasia-Bolgatanga stretch of the Tamale-Bolga Highway (N10) and the Bolga-Bawku-Pulmakom Road.

According to regional conflict monitors, over 40 attacks have been recorded on these roads since August 2022.

These attacks, often targeting members of rival factions, have also resulted in harm to innocent drivers and passengers unconnected to the conflict.

The attackers’ modus operandi typically involves ambushing vehicles, opening fire, and setting them ablaze.

Three significant attacks have already been reported this year:

1. January 6, 2025: Gunmen opened fire on a bus travelling from Bolgatanga to Bawku. The attack caused the bus to crash into a gutter, killing the driver and injuring many passengers, most of whom were Mamprusis.

2. January 11, 2025: Armed assailants targeted a bus travelling from Garu to Kumasi along the Bolga-Bawku Road near Pusug-Namoo.

3. January 14, 2025: Unknown gunmen carried out an arson attack on a faulty truck carrying vegetables from Missiga to Kumasi in Walewale.

These incidents underscore the urgency of President Mahama’s efforts to engage traditional authorities in fostering peace and stability in the region.

Mahama proposes government sponsorship for Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-proposes-government-sponsorship-for-anti-lgbtq-bill/ Tue, 14 Jan 2025 16:05:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2492809 President John Dramani Mahama has suggested a new approach to the controversial Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, proposing that it be introduced as a government-sponsored bill instead of a private member’s bill.

Speaking during a meeting with the Catholic Bishops Conference in Accra on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, President Mahama argued that government sponsorship would give the bill greater legitimacy and improve its chances of passage.

He explained that presenting the bill as a government initiative would reflect broader institutional backing and signal a unified stance on the issue.

“I don’t know what the promoters of the bill intend to do, but I think we should have a conversation about it again,” Mahama said.

“If we decide to move the bill forward, it should be done with consensus. It probably shouldn’t be a private member’s bill but a government bill backed by consultations with all stakeholders.”

President Mahama also highlighted the importance of instilling Ghanaian values through education.

He suggested that an emphasis on teaching cultural and family values in schools could reduce the need for legislative enforcement.

“If we’re teaching our values in schools, we wouldn’t need to pass a bill to enforce family values. More than just passing the family values bill, we need to agree on a curriculum that instills these values in our children as they grow,” he said.

He expressed optimism about ongoing discussions and a potential review conference to build consensus on these issues.

The fire, which occurred on January 2 this year, destroyed hundreds of shops and property worth millions of Ghana cedis, leaving traders devastated.

In a meeting with the traders, President Mahama acknowledged the heavy loss and assured them of his administration’s support.

He revealed that his government has taken steps to prevent such fires from happening in the future.

“We can’t rule out the possibility of arsonists being behind these fires,” he said. “We’ve held a meeting with security heads to tackle this issue, and I’ve asked security to tighten security around markets.”

To prevent future fires, President Mahama has instructed the fire service to set up stations near major markets and install cameras to identify and apprehend anyone responsible for setting fires.

He also pledged to work with traders to rebuild the market in a better-designed way and to provide support to cushion their losses.

Mahama should scrap deputy ministerial position for tourism https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-should-scrap-deputy-ministerial-position-for-tourism/ Mon, 13 Jan 2025 17:42:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2492447 In fulfilment of his promise to run a lean government, one bold decision President John Dramani Mahama must take is to scrap the deputy ministerial positions in most of the sectors.

In my previous article titled ‘10 things Mahama must do in his first year’, while I indicated that President Mahama should appoint someone from the industry or someone who understands the operation and business of the turf as the minister, I also highlighted the need for him not to appoint any deputy minister for tourism, culture and creative arts.

The President, John Dramani Mahama should scrap the deputy positions for most of the ministries including our Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. There is enough evidence to show that the deputy ministers are merely titular and perform little or no functions at all. When you hold them accountable, they tell you they are not in charge and that they just assist their bosses.

Truly, they have never been in charge because the constitution does not put them in charge. Our ministry needs just one minister, particularly someone from our industry or someone who really understands the creative economy.

There are directors and CEOs at the various institutions in the ministry who can always work with the minister.

Under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture alone, we have the CEO of Ghana Tourism Authority, CEO of Ghana Tourism Development Company, CEO of National Film Authority, Director of National Commission on Culture, Executive Director of National Theatre, Director at National Folklore Board, Director of Creative Arts at the Ministry, Director of Tourism at the Ministry and Executive Secretary of Creative Arts Agency.”

At this point that people are lobbying for positions and party loyalists are looking forward to getting ‘compensated’ with positions they don’t even qualify to hold, the President might be tempted to burden the tax payer by putting square pegs in round holes.

The Deputy Ministerial positions should not be used as a form of tokenism for any minority group of people.

The fact that a tourism, culture or creative arts person has served the National Democratic Congress in various ways to win power does not mean, they automatically need to be made ministers.

There are various ways such people can still contribute to the growth of the industry. Their services may be needed in the thirteen (13) agencies under the ministry.

Once the substantive ministry has all that it takes to run the sector, the most important thing is to empower the various Chief Executive Officers, Executive Secretaries, and directors of the agencies. That done, they will assist the minister to deliver perfectly.

While I look forward to the appointment of a truly qualified person as minister of the sector, I will be highly disappointed if President Mahama also nominates a deputy minister.

Speaking at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, the President promised to uncap the NHIS levy in the upcoming budget.

This, he noted, will seek to improve healthcare access across Ghana.

You’re elected to work, not to lament – Afenyo-Markin tells gov’t https://www.adomonline.com/youre-elected-to-work-not-to-lament-afenyo-markin-tells-govt/ Mon, 13 Jan 2025 12:03:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2492270 The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the Akufo-Addo administration of attempting to shift blame for a looming power crisis onto the previous government under President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking at the start of the vetting of ministerial nominees in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin urged the administration to focus on solutions rather than revisiting past failures.

“It is deeply concerning to hear the new administration attempting to shift blame,” Afenyo-Markin said.

“The outgoing Akufo-Addo government, despite challenges, maintained a stable and reliable power supply. This contrasts sharply with the Mahama administration’s infamous ‘Dumsor’ era, which caused immense hardship to businesses and households.”

The Minority Leader called on the nominee for energy, if approved, to present a clear and sustainable plan to ensure uninterrupted power supply, stressing that Ghanaians expect leadership that delivers results, not excuses.

“Ghanaians deserve leadership that prioritizes tangible action over empty rhetoric, accountability over deflection, and results over excuses, especially when it comes to a stable power supply,” he added.

Afenyo-Markin also raised concerns about the government’s perceived backtracking on campaign promises, specifically the pledges to scrap taxes such as the E-Levy and betting tax. He criticized the apparent shift toward rationalizing these taxes, describing it as a betrayal of public trust.

“Campaign promises are binding, not conditional. They form the foundation of a social contract between leaders and the electorate,” he stated.

“Any attempt to alter those commitments after assuming office undermines public trust.”

He urged the nominee for finance, if approved, to ensure these promises are fulfilled promptly and transparently.

He warned that the Minority would hold the government accountable for its commitments, calling for the President’s budget and economic policy statement to reflect these promises.

“The people of Ghana deserve a government that honours its promises fully and without hesitation,” Afenyo-Markin added.

Ministry of Youth and Sports now Ministry of Sports and Recreation https://www.adomonline.com/ministry-of-youth-and-sports-now-ministry-of-sports-and-recreation/ Sun, 12 Jan 2025 08:29:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491914 President John Mahama has officially renamed the Ministry of Youth and Sports to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation as part of a broader governmental restructuring effort.

The renaming, carried out under Section 11 (3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D.C. Law 327), separates the previously combined sports and youth sectors into distinct ministries.

Consequently, the youth-focused arm will now operate independently as the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment.

This change is part of a streamlined approach that has reduced the total number of ministries to 23, down from the previous administration’s 30.

In related developments, President Mahama is expected to announce the appointment of a new Sports Minister in the coming week.

Former Sports Minister Nii Lantey Vanderpuije is rumored to be a strong contender for the role.

Mahama urges calm; calls on NDC supporters to act responsibly https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-urges-calm-calls-on-ndc-supporters-to-act-responsibly/ Fri, 10 Jan 2025 18:35:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491743 President John Mahama has called on National Democratic Congress(NDC) supporters to avoid illegal activities and act responsibly.

Mr Mahama’s clarion call comes in the wake of reported vandalism and looting at various state agencies as his administration begins work.

“I call on all our supporters and others engaged in illegal actions, such as looting goods and occupying government offices, to desist from such practices. We must do things differently to maintain the trust and confidence Ghanaians have placed in us,” he charged.

Speaking at the National Muslim Prayer and Thanksgiving at the National Mosque at Kanda in Accra, he reminded Ghanaians that the conclusion of elections signals the beginning of a greater shared responsibility.

“The end of elections marks the beginning of greater responsibility for all of us. Regardless of political affiliation, we must work together towards our shared vision, development and prosperity for Ghana,” he stated.

President Mahama further admonished party supporters to act differently, adding, “Many have said it’s the same thing the NPP did in 2017, and that is why Ghanaians voted them out. We must not copy their mistakes. I plead with you, let us do things in an orderly manner.”

Pledging a swift establishment of his government, Mr Mahama promised to appoint a full cabinet within 14 days.

“The government is being formed, and ministers will be put in place, and if you have any issues, you can go to them to have them resolved. Let’s exercise restraint and act responsibly,” he added.

He concluded by reminding the nation of the strength found in unity and diversity.

“Our diversity as a people is not a weakness, indeed it is our strength. Whether we are Muslims, Christians, or from any other faith, our collective aspirations for a better future bind us together,” he said.

Ghana seeks reinstatement of $190M MCC funds for electricity sector reforms https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-seeks-reinstatement-of-190m-mcc-funds-for-electricity-sector-reforms/ Thu, 09 Jan 2025 17:19:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491342 President John Dramani Mahama has announced Ghana’s readiness to renegotiate with the United States Government for the possible reinstatement of $190 million under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact, initially allocated to improve the country’s electricity sector.

President Mahama disclosed this during a meeting with Mr. Ousmane Diagana, the World Bank Vice President for West and Central Africa, in Accra. Mr. Diagana was in the country to witness the President’s inauguration on January 7 at Independence Square.

The President emphasized the importance of reforming Ghana’s energy sector to reduce debts and enhance efficiency.

Reflecting on his time as Vice President under the late President John Evans Atta Mills, Mahama recalled signing the MCC agreement to position Ghana as a leading electricity producer and exporter in Africa.

“Unfortunately, the change in government disrupted the Millennium Challenge Compact, particularly the final phase aimed at improving distribution, billing, and metering efficiency. The PDS debacle is history, but we must revisit privatizing electricity distribution to introduce private-sector efficiency,” he said.

President Mahama revealed that discussions with the MCC had left the door open for reinstating the $190 million fund.

He also called on the World Bank to consider supporting Ghana to complete reforms in the electricity distribution sector if MCC funding cannot be reinstated.

“In the meantime, we are committed to restoring transparency, stabilizing the system through the cash waterfall mechanism, and addressing inefficiencies within the power value chain,” he added.

Mr. Ousmane Diagana reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s socioeconomic development agenda, expressing optimism about the country’s efforts to enhance its energy infrastructure.

He further assured Ghanaians, “We will prioritise investment in infrastructure and human resources to ensure accessible, quality medical care.”

Sworn into office two days ago, Mahama had pledged during his campaign to revive all abandoned national projects if elected.

His health sector focus includes completing the previous government’s Agenda 111 initiative, aimed at constructing 111 hospitals and three psychiatric facilities across districts lacking major healthcare infrastructure.

Of the 111 hospitals, only three were completed under the previous administration but were left non-operational.

We shall pass a code of conduct for officeholders and ensure compliance – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/we-shall-pass-a-code-of-conduct-for-officeholders-and-ensure-compliance-mahama/ Thu, 09 Jan 2025 16:02:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491323

As part of efforts to ensure accountability, dedicated service delivery, integrity, and the elimination of corruption and unacceptable behavior among public officeholders, President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to prioritize the passage of a code of conduct for public workers in his new government.

In his speech at the 92nd annual National Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission in Winneba on Thursday, January 9, President Mahama stated, “We shall pass a code of conduct for our officeholders, and they will strictly abide by that code of conduct.”

The Code of Conduct for public officers will outline the values, principles, and standards of acceptable ethical behavior, ensuring that public officeholders are held accountable for their actions. According to Chapter 24 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, public officers are required to avoid unethical behavior, such as conflicts of interest, illicit enrichment, and other improper conduct.

Despite repeated assurances by the previous Nana Akufo-Addo administration to pass the bill into law, this was not achieved before their term ended. However, President Mahama’s government intends to make this a priority. Once passed, the bill will not only deter corrupt practices but also prevent public officers from misusing state property for personal gain.

For example, public vehicles will no longer be used for private activities before or after working hours.

Additionally, President Mahama emphasized his commitment to the fight against corruption and the strengthening of Ghana’s justice system. He promised to invest in measures to ensure transparency and accountability within state institutions.

“We shall carry out a comprehensive audit to establish the status of our state-owned enterprises,” President Mahama said. He further reiterated his commitment to operationalizing his Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) initiative, which aims to investigate and recover misappropriated public assets.

“We shall operationalize the Operation Recover All Loots and investigate individuals we believe have engaged in the misappropriation of public property, pursuing them to recover such assets,” he added.

You elected us to solve the problems, we will make sure your lights stay on – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/you-elected-us-to-solve-the-problems-we-will-make-sure-your-lights-stay-on-mahama/ Thu, 09 Jan 2025 15:52:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491319 President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing Ghana’s energy challenges and ensuring that the nation avoids a return to the power outages, commonly referred to as “Dumsor.”

Speaking at the National Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana on Thursday, January 9, President Mahama acknowledged the critical issues in the energy sector.

He assured Ghanaians that his government is implementing proactive measures to stabilize the situation and prevent future disruptions in electricity supply.

“We are assuming office at a critical time in our nation’s history. Ghana faces significant challenges, but that is precisely why you elected us. We will take full responsibility for solving these problems and transparently communicate the challenges we face,” the President said.

He urged citizens not to lose hope, adding, “There is a threat of power outages, but my brothers and sisters, don’t despair. You elected us to solve the problems, not to pass blame. I assure you we will ensure your lights stay on.”

President Mahama’s remarks come as the country grapples with fuel shortages for thermal plants and concerns over delayed pipeline maintenance by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo). Experts have warned that these issues, if not addressed, could worsen Ghana’s energy crisis.

In a significant development, WAPCo announced on January 9 that it would postpone its planned pipeline maintenance by two weeks.

This decision, reached after intense negotiations led by a technical committee established by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, has temporarily averted an imminent power crisis.

The maintenance, initially scheduled to begin this week, had been flagged by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) as a potential threat to the country’s electricity supply.

GRIDCo warned that the combination of fuel shortages for thermal plants and disruptions in gas supply from the pipeline could severely undermine Ghana’s power generation capacity.

President Mahama’s administration has pledged to prioritize resolving these challenges to ensure a sustainable and reliable energy supply for all Ghanaians.

We can encourage Burkinabe leader to embrace democracy – Joyce Bawah https://www.adomonline.com/we-can-encourage-burkinabe-leader-to-embrace-democracy-joyce-bawah/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 15:18:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490891 Special Aide to President John Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, says the Burkinabe leader, Ibrahim Traoré’s appearance with arms during the inaugural ceremony could yield positive results.

She explained that the warm welcome extended to the Burkinabe leader might encourage him to embrace democracy.

“You know, this is also a country with a very delicate history, and there are all sorts of things at play. If there is anybody who can get him to actually rescind his decision to continue as a military leader, Ghana has its own history. If we want to encourage him to return to democracy, I’m sure this could be a great way. You can still go to the polls and lead your country with whatever flair and pageantry you want,” she opined.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Tuesday, January 8, she stated that thorough security checks were conducted before the invited guests were allowed into the event’s perimeter.

Her comments followed public concerns about the leader taking the presidential platform while carrying a sidearm.

President Ibrahim Traoré was seen at the presidential inauguration ceremony exchanging pleasantries with the newly elected president while still carrying his sidearm.

Meanwhile, she expressed her frustration at seeing the weapon on the Burkinabe leader during the event, saying, “I also found it a bit awkward when I saw the gun on him.”

In an interview on Adom FM’s Midday News, Kasiebo is Tasty, Mr. Amponsah acknowledged that the announcement was sudden.

However, he stated that they anticipated this outcome once there was a change of government following the December 7 election.

“We were expecting this, but it is not surprising. Whether it came late or not, nothing would have changed. Bawumia conceded defeat, and we all prepared ourselves, but we didn’t expect it to come today,” he stated.

President John Mahama, on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, revoked the appointments of all Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

This was outlined in a letter signed by the Executive Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, and addressed to the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development.

Following the revocation, the Coordinating Directors of the various MMDAs have been directed to assume responsibility as acting Chief Executives until substantive appointments are made.

Why I pity Mahama – Dr Suleiman [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/why-i-pity-mahama-dr-suleiman-listen/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 11:56:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490736 The Founder of the Centre for Alternative Politics and Security West Africa (CAPS-WA), Dr. Muhammad Dan Suleiman, has expressed sympathy for President John Mahama.

According to him, Mr Mahama made a lot of promises to Ghanaians ahead of the December 7, 2024, election.

But considering the resources available and the current state of the economy, Dr Suleiman is skeptical about Mahama’s ability to fully deliver on his promises.

“I pity this president a bit because he made a lot of promises to develop the country but weighing what he said against the money and other resources available, Ghana does not have that strength. So he may not be able to deliver on all his promises,” he said.

However, Dr Suleiman in an interview on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem admonished President Mahama to psych Ghanaians for the challenges ahead.

“As soon as possible, he should sensitise Ghanaians so that if he starts and things gets tough, he will come back and ask Ghanaians to be patient and I agree with that.

“He has four years and I believe he may not be able to deliver on all his promises so I will appeal to Ghanaians that when he asks for patience, we would understand him,” he stated.

Dr Suleiman further stressed that given the overwhelming endorsement in the 2024 election, Ghanaians may run out of patience of President Mahama continues to give excuses after a year or two.

“His communication strategy must focus on sensitising Ghanaians to better understand the sequence of governance because from where I sit, I don’t think Ghanaians will be patient without this understanding,” he added.
