President Mahama announced Dumelo’s appointment on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Adugwala emphasized the association’s long-standing call for the Agriculture Ministry to be led by individuals with direct industry experience.

He expressed confidence that Dumelo, being a farmer himself, understands the challenges faced by farmers.

“We have always advocated that those at the ministry should have firsthand knowledge of the difficulties farmers face. So, we believe that with John Dumelo being a farmer, he understands these challenges,” he stated.

The association also noted that Dumelo’s youthful energy could help attract more young people into agriculture.

“Looking at his youthful nature, we expect policies that will encourage the youth to engage in agriculture, leveraging technology to make modern farming easier and more productive,” he added.

Mr. Adugwala further highlighted Dumelo’s knowledge and experience, stating that he is well-positioned to support the implementation of President Mahama’s 24-hour economy policy in the agricultural sector.

Just months after stepping into the role of an MP, Dumelo has been named the Deputy Minister-Designate for Food and Agriculture.

The appointment comes in recognition of his extensive experience in agribusiness, particularly his success as a farmer with plantations across the northern regions of Ghana.

Dumelo owns a variety of agricultural ventures, including poultry and ginger farms, and employs around 400 people annually, providing them with jobs and contributing to the local economy.

However, his recent appointment has sparked diverse reactions from Ghanaians, with many praising his selection while others express mixed opinions.

Many Ghanaians have hailed the decision as a well-deserved recognition of Dumelo’s hard work and commitment to the agricultural sector.

A netizen described him as a true farmer at heart whose work in agribusiness speaks volumes.

Another commented that his appointment is a great step for the future of Ghana’s agriculture as the country needs someone who understands the challenges faced by farmers.

Nonetheless, some Ghanaians have expressed reservations, questioning the timing of the appointment and whether Dumelo’s political experience is enough for the complexities of the agricultural sector.

While Dumelo’s business background is admirable, some critics argue that political roles require more than just personal success.

As the Deputy Minister-Designate, Dumelo will be expected to bring fresh ideas, and his supporters hope his passion for agribusiness will translate into impactful policies for the sector.

“I was with him in Parliament for orientation, but I just left. A Plus says we need sirens; maybe that’s his opinion, but personally, I don’t think I need a siren,” he said, referring to comments made by his colleague, Kwame Obeng Asare, popularly known as A Plus.

The Ayawaso West Wuogon MP acknowledged that the issue has sparked a long-standing debate among MPs, with some advocating for the use of sirens. However, he reiterated his personal disagreement with this view.

“I know some people do, and it’s a debate that has been ongoing for some time, but personally, I don’t,” he added.

The debate over whether MPs should be permitted to use sirens for transportation continues to divide opinions, with some arguing that it enhances efficiency in performing their duties, while others view it as unnecessary and disruptive.

Politicians can’t fool the people all the time – John Dumelo https://www.adomonline.com/politicians-cant-fool-the-people-all-the-time-john-dumelo/ Thu, 12 Dec 2024 14:26:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2482993 The newly-elected Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, John Dumelo, has emphasized the increasing discernment of voters when choosing their leaders.

Dumelo made this remark while reflecting on the strategies employed by his opponent, Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during the recent elections.

He previously accused Lydia of attempting to influence voters with food items, money, and even whispering into their ears while they were in the queue to cast their ballots.

In an interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, Dumelo attributed his victory to his hard work and the democratic maturity of the electorate.

He noted that, many voters are no longer easily swayed by handouts but instead make decisions based on policies and their prevailing circumstances.

“Judging by the results that came in, you can’t fool the people all the time. If they don’t want to vote for you, they will collect the things and still not vote for you,” he remarked.

Dumelo described the act of distributing items to win votes as politically unethical, stating, “You don’t fight crime with crime; that’s why I was just cool and calm about it.”

He highlighted his commitment to prioritizing the needs and interests of his constituents, aiming to build strong relationships and effectively address their concerns.

Running on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dumelo secured victory over the incumbent MP, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, with 47,560 votes to her 39,214 votes.

The actor-turned-politician John Dumelo addressed the challenges of redefining political participation as an entertainer, emphasizing the importance of representation and respect for all professions in Ghana’s Parliament.

He said this in an interview on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz with Andy Dosty.

John Dumelo, who has transitioned from a successful acting career to a political role, was asked about overcoming the stigma of being perceived as limited by his entertainment background.

“I see it as a little bit disrespectful because you have lawyers, you have doctors, you have businessmen in Parliament”.

He highlighted the diverse backgrounds already present in Ghana’s Parliament, pointing out that professionals from various fields, including law, medicine, and business, serve as Members of Parliament.

“We even had hairdressers in Parliament,” he added, stressing that the core of political service is about effectively representing one’s constituents, regardless of prior career paths.

“But the same politicians are the same people who come to entertainers to endorse them during political seasons and political campaigns because they know how powerful entertainers can be.

“And so, for me, that stigma is just one of those things that I just when people say it, I just laugh about it. But all in all, it’s for us to represent the people well” Mr. Dumelo added.

John Dumelo emphasized that students face significant challenges in traveling to the district office at Ridge Centre to transfer their votes.

He remarked that, thousands of students from institutions such as UNIMAC, GIJ, UG-Legon GIMPA, UPSA, and Knustford are eager to transfer their votes but are hindered by the location barrier.

With only ten days remaining to complete the voter transfer exercise, he urged the Electoral Commission to set up centers in these universities to facilitate the process.

He pointed out that students have lectures, internal assessments, examinations, assignments and other commitments that make it difficult for them to travel to Ridge.

Many of these students have registered in their home regions but are currently residing in Accra for their studies and will likely remain there on December 7.

Mr. Dumelo stressed that these students are likely to be disenfranchised and suggested that even a four or five-day presence of voter transfer machines in the universities would be immensely beneficial.

He urged the Electoral Commission to consider this proposal to ensure a large turnout and smooth voting process for the students.

John Dumelo issues strong warning to Lydia Alhassan and her campaign team https://www.adomonline.com/john-dumelo-issues-strong-warning-to-lydia-alhassan-and-her-campaign-team/ Thu, 30 May 2024 02:17:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2402064 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has addressed a video circulating on social media that depicts a confrontation between him and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the ongoing limited registration center at the University of Ghana, Legon.

The incident, which occurred on May 27, 2024,started with Dumelo engaging peacefully with registrants at the center.

However, he claims some NPP members attempted to interfere with his interactions, leading to disrespectful behavior towards him.

The video has sparked significant attention and necessitated a response from Dumelo’s campaign team to clarify the situation.

Dumelo’s campaign team alleged that these interruptions are part of a deliberate strategy by the incumbent Member of Parliament, Lydia Alhassan, and her supporters, who feel threatened by Dumelo’s popularity and engagement with voters.

They alleged that Lydia Alhassan had instructed her supporters to attack Dumelo on several occasions during the registration exercise.

The statement further referenced the violent incidents during the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, which were instigated on behalf of Lydia Alhassan, noting that despite efforts to defuse the situation, the attacks on Dumelo have continued.

In response, John Dumelo has sent a resounding warning to Lydia Alhassan and her team to conduct themselves appropriately or face similar actions from his supporters.

They expressed a strong stance against the continuation of violence and intimidation tactics leading up to the 2024 general election and vowed to defend themselves to protect the democratic process.

John Dumelo, however, reassured the public that he would never undermine the integrity of the registration exercise.

He urged the public and NDC members to disregard the false propaganda being spread by the NPP and Lydia Alhassan.

The incident involved Dumelo and a student identified as Dacosta, who confronted Dumelo over restrictions on his phone usage at the center.

The verbal exchange escalated and nearly turned physical before security officers intervened and escorted Dumelo away.

A political commentator later reported on social media that Dacosta had sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).

The commentator even attached a photo of a bloody knee, which was later proven to be unrelated to the incident and did not even occur in Ghana.

In response to calls for legal action against the individual spreading false information, Dumelo dismissed the idea.

He remarked that in legal terms, it is often impractical to sue someone without substantial means (“a man of straw”) as it would be challenging to enforce any resulting financial judgment.

The clip, filmed years ago on the set of a movie, captures a moment he expressed concern over shooting a scene on water without proper safety precautions.

Ayawaso West: Dumelo highlights three reasons for loss to Lydia Alhassan in 2020 https://www.adomonline.com/ayawaso-west-dumelo-highlights-three-reasons-for-loss-to-lydia-alhassan-in-2020/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 02:40:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2378053 Actor-turned-politician, John Dumelo has revealed three key reasons behind his loss in the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary elections in 2020.

During an interview with Bola Ray, Dumelo cited several factors that contributed to his defeat, highlighting significant setbacks encountered during the campaign.

One crucial factor, according to Dumelo, was the absence of students from tertiary institutions within the constituency during the election period.

This absence, he explained, adversely affected his vote count, as he believed he could have garnered more support if students had been present on campus.

Another setback Dumelo acknowledged was the insufficient attention given to door-to-door campaigning by his team.

He admitted that while they engaged in door-to-door activities, they did not cover all areas adequately, hindering their ability to reach a significant portion of constituents and solicit their backing.

The actor also acknowledged unspecified mishaps that occurred during the election period, which contributed to his loss. While he did not elaborate on these incidents, he emphasized the importance of learning from past mistakes.

Looking ahead to the 2024 parliamentary elections, Mr Dumelo expressed confidence in his ability to secure victory, noting that he had learned valuable lessons from his previous campaign. He emphasized the need to work smartly, leveraging the strengths and weaknesses of opponents to his advantage.

As he prepares to contest against the incumbent, Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dumelo assured that he and his team have thoroughly assessed their past performance, identified areas for improvement, and are determined to mount a stronger campaign in the upcoming elections.

With a strategic approach and a renewed focus on addressing previous shortcomings, Dumelo aims to reclaim the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat in 2024.

Farmer Dumelo rates govt’s Planting for Food and Jobs initiative https://www.adomonline.com/farmer-dumelo-rates-govts-planting-for-food-and-jobs-initiative/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 13:01:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2376607 Budding farmer, John Dumelo has rated the success of government’s Planting for Food and Jobs (PJF) initiative seven years since it was launched.

PFJ was launched in April 2017 by President Akufo-Addo, focused on improving the yields of farmers, access to markets, reducing post-harvest losses and enhancing extension service delivery.

However, to John Dumelo, the initiative has fallen short of expectations.

In a recent Twitter Q&A session, the farmer offered his candid assessment of the government’s policy, rating it a 4 out of 10.

When probed about what policy he would prioritize to enhance the agricultural sector if he were to assume the presidency, Dumelo pointed to the critical need for irrigation.

He stressed that, enabling farmers to irrigate their lands would allow for year-round farming activities, rather than being confined to a single planting season.

Owing to his knowledge in agriculture, Mr. Dumelo expressed belief more can be done to improve the sector.

Prince David Osei was among a group of actors who actively campaigned for Lydia Alhassan, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, leading her to victory in the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat against colleague John Dumelo.

However, as her term nears its end, Osei has criticized Alhassan’s leadership, claiming a perceived lack of responsiveness to constituents’ concerns and a failure to acknowledge her supporters, including himself.

During a recent interview on GhOne, Osei hinted at feeling undervalued, pointing out that despite enduring name-calling and public criticism for supporting Alhassan, he received no acknowledgment from her.

To avoid a repeat of feeling neglected, Prince David Osei expressed his intention to redirect his support to John Dumelo, emphasizing that Dumelo is also part of the entertainment industry and “one of us.”

“I feel like when people go all out for you, you don’t take them for granted. We stood on that platform and got a lot of insults because of Ma Lydia. I sent her PA a message alerting them of Legon students needing support, and I never got a response. So if after the insult and humiliation, you do nothing, then I will support John,” Osei explained.

Despite being known as an NPP sympathizer, Osei stated that it should not come as a surprise if he is seen actively campaigning for the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) John Dumelo in the future.

“My ginger factory in Oti is not and cannot be under 1d1f. We built that factory under 9 Months.,” he clarified. Adding that, “It’s almost 8 years and the government hasn’t even laid a block to fulfill their ginger factory promise to the people of Oti.”

This came up after the actor asked how much government has spent on the (1D1F) initiative aimed at moving Ghana’s agric sector from consumption to production.

He wrote: “How much has gov spent on 1d1f so far? How many factories are fully functional and operational? Which specific product (being produced here in Ghana) as a result of the 1d1f initiative has reduced our import bill?

Mr Dumelo, who is certain to he would become the next MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon asked why the 1D1F website has no details on projects across the country.

According to the actor, the Vice President cannot critise Mahama’s policy because all the flagship programmes promised by his government have failed.

Dr Bawumia during his tour of the north on Monday, November 20, criticised Mahama’s proposal, stating that a 24-hour economy is already a reality for many businesses based on market demand and opportunities.

This comes after the former President, John Mahama promised to establish a 24-hour economy when elected as President in the 2024 presidential election.

According to the actor, he’s dreamed of making millions of dollars out of farming and not politics.

“I’m just getting into parliament to serve my people and to receive my salary as all the other parliamentarians do. I have dreamt of making a million dollars through farming but not through politics,” he said on Accra-based TV3.

According to him, the constituents will retain the sitting Member of Parliament (MP), Lydia Alhassan.

He expressed his disappointment in Ghana Movie Awards Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Fred Nuamah for stepping down from the contest.

To him, Mr Nuamah would have given Mr Dumelo a good run for his money.

“I was happy Fred was contesting John because, in this second attempt, John was too boastful as if he owns the place. He was so overconfident that he was winning so I was happy he was being contested just to prove that the people can change. It’s politics anyone can win but if he says he has backed down, I don’t think he’s confident enough. He doesn’t believe that people love him.

“I loved Fred Nuamah more than John and if I had the chance to vote I would vote for Fred. Aside from the fact that John is hardworking, I think he only wants to be an MP to prove a point. John will lose again because the people already have a candidate,” he said on Accra-based UTV.

In a letter addressed to the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s General Secretary and the chairman of the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Mr Nuamah officially withdrew and threw his support behind his former political rival, Mr Dumelo.

He stated, “I am happy. It’s a relief, and it’s a good time.”

He revealed that he had met with Nuamah prior to the public announcement of the withdrawal, having engaged in discussions “once or twice” regarding the situation.

Dumelo also acknowledged the role of party leaders in influencing Nuamah’s decision, saying, “I knew some of the leaders in the party talked with him, and he believes that also accounted for his decision.”

With Nuamah’s exit from the race and another candidate also stepping down, Dumelo is now poised to contest the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat for the NDC without opposition.

Confident about his prospects, Dumelo emphasized, “We will make sure we unseat the incumbent MP in that constituency, Lydia Alhassan. I have seen her weak point and will ensure that I have done my homework and believe that I will win hands down, with or without the students on the University of Ghana campus.”

Meanwhile, Fred Nuamah, speaking on the same show, revealed that he has yet to meet with Dumelo following his decision to withdraw.

He mentioned that Dumelo had reached out to discuss how to proceed and offer support.

Nuamah and Dumelo’s relationship had been strained due to political rivalry, with Dumelo accusing Nuamah of betraying him by contesting against him in the 2020 primaries.

The Ayawaso West Wuogon primary, among several others, had been postponed by the NDC in an effort to address internal matters before holding the primaries.

The withdrawal of Fred Nuamah adds a new dimension to the political landscape, setting the stage for a focused and unopposed effort by John Dumelo to secure the parliamentary seat in the upcoming elections.

I was losing my brother – Fred Nuamah on Ayawaso West Wuogon race https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-losing-my-brother-fred-nuamah-on-ayawaso-west-wuogon-race/ Tue, 08 Aug 2023 12:21:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2281354 Fred Nuamah, a contender against John Dumelo in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary, has said his decision to withdraw from the race is borne out of his relationship with the latter.

Mr Nuamah has said he was losing his brother as a result of his political ambition, and that was not something he was happy about.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the movie producer stated it was therefore important for him to take immediate steps to restore their friendship.

“We have a great relationship and from the beginning, it was quite difficult. I was losing my brother and that is not what family is for. So I have to quickly take a decision to win my brother back,” he said.

Mr Nuamah, a few months ago, raised eyebrows and set tongues wagging for ‘stealing’ his very good friend John Dumelo’s spot.

As a result, many called on him to step down for Mr Dumelo who represented the NDC in the 2020 election and polled 37,778 votes against the incumbent, New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Lydia Seyram Alhassan’s 39,851 votes.

But Fred stated it is too late for him to step down since he engaged his friend [Dumelo] about his decision and he gave him his blessings.

He added he was surprised about Mr Dumelo’s u-turn because it was evident and crystal clear that he was not going for the Ayawaso seat anymore and rather invested in Guan/SALL.

Following the development, Mr Dumelo clarified that his relationship with Mr Nuamah, who he has been friends with for almost two decades, is now strictly professional.

“If I see him, I will say hi and ask how he is, and move on,” Mr Dumelo stated, adding that he didn’t think Mr Nuamah would behave the way he currently is if he were still a true friend.

However, in an interesting twist, Mr Nuamah on Monday, August 7, 2023, wrote to the NDC about his decision to withdraw from the race and support Mr Dumelo.

NDC Primaries: Fred Nuamah withdraws from Ayawaso West Wuogon race https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-primaries-fred-nuamah-withdraws-from-ayawaso-west-wuogon-race/ Tue, 08 Aug 2023 07:05:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2281254
Actor-turned-politician, Fred Nuamah, has withdrawn from the Ayawaso West Wuogon National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary.

In a letter addressed to the party, Mr Nuamah said the decision was arrived at after extensive consultations with key stakeholders and without any external influence.

“I firmly believe that the NDC must present a unified front for the 2024 general election. As a dedicated member of the NDC, I prioritise we the party’s unity and the President John Mahama project aimed at rescuing our country,” the aspirant noted.

Mr Nuamah, following his decision, endorsed and threw his support behind his best friend and key contender, John Dumelo.

“I wholeheartedly endorse and throw my support behind my good friend and brother, Mr John Dumelo, to be the parliamentary candidate for the NDC in the Ayawaso West-Wuogon constituency,” he pledged.

He further expressed appreciation to his fans and all well-wishers for their support, adding that he is grateful for the time spent with them all and urged them to support Mr Dumelo as well.

“I urge all my supporters across all levels of the party in the constituency to rally behind John Dumelo and provide him with the needed support.

“Together, with a renewed sense of togetherness, we can secure victory in the 2024 elections and uplift our nation from its current state,” he appealed.

This comes a few days after the NDC opened nominations in 18 constituencies where elections were put on hold due to some differences which have now been resolved.

In some of the affected constituencies, nominations were opened but the elections did not take place while in others, nominations did not open at all.

In Ayawaso West Wuogon, the party suspended the vetting of the candidates in April, with the election, which was set for May 13, also suspended.

Ghanaians were left in shock in March when Mr Nuamah announced his decision to contest the same seat against Mr Dumelo.

This was a few days after the latter publicly declared his bid.

All advice for Mr Nuamah to step down proved futile while he accused Mr Dumelo of bad faith, alleging that he had the blessings of his friend to contest the polls.

Mr Dumelo, however, denied the claims, stating they never had any conversation about Mr Nuamah’s political bid in the same constituency.

John Dumelo reveals game-changing ambition with Cecilia Dapaah’s money https://www.adomonline.com/john-dumelo-reveals-game-changing-ambition-with-cecilia-dapaahs-money/ Mon, 31 Jul 2023 13:43:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2278834 Renowned Ghanaian actor, farmer, and entrepreneur, John Dumelo, has expressed his aspirations after observing the recent controversy surrounding former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah.

The Minister had made headlines for apprehending her househelp and other individuals, accusing them of being involved in the disappearance of funds from her residence.

In light of this incident, Mr Dumelo couldn’t help but imagine what he could achieve with just a fraction of Cecilia Dapaah’s considerable wealth.

He revealed that with such financial capital, he would be able to expand his onions and tomato farm significantly.

With a clear vision, he stated that the funds would be primarily directed towards implementing modern irrigation techniques and acquiring high-yielding seeds to make his farm highly productive and profitable.

The Ghanaian actor emphasized that his ambitions extended beyond personal gains. He believed that by bolstering his farm’s productivity, he could play a significant role in reducing the country’s reliance on onion and tomato imports.

Outlining his ambitious targets, Mr Dumelo envisioned a 10% reduction in importation of these vegetables from Burkina Faso and Niger by the year 2024. Furthermore, he aimed for an even more substantial decrease of 19% by 2025.

He wrote: “Only if I had a fraction of Cecelia Dapaa’s $1m, the importation of onions and tomatoes from Burkina and Niger will reduce by 10% in 2024 and 19% in 2025. I will invest it heavily in irrigation and high yielding seeds and make some good profits. So help me God! [SIC].”
