Video shows dog starting house fire by turning on stove in middle of night https://www.adomonline.com/video-shows-dog-starting-house-fire-by-turning-on-stove-in-middle-of-night/ Thu, 04 Jul 2024 16:01:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2417737 Authorities have released a video of a dog starting a house fire when it turned on the stove in the middle of the night and ignited some boxes sitting on top of it, fire officials said.

The incident occurred early in the morning on June 26 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, when the Colorado Springs Fire Department was dispatched to a home on the 1600 block of Rushmore Drive at approximately 4:43 a.m. after receiving a call from a family saying they had experienced a fire on their stove but had been able to extinguish it relatively quickly, according to a statement released by fire officials.

“Engine 23 arrived at the scene at 4:47 a.m. at a residential home with no visible fire or smoke. Upon investigation, crews did not find any active fire but did find evidence of a fire,” said the Colorado Springs Fire Department in a statement on social media.

The male homeowner was able to extinguish the fire before crews got there, authorities said, but he was later transported to a local hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. There were no other injuries reported in the home, either to people or their pets.

“After talking to the homeowners and looking through their home security footage, we determined their pup got a bit curious and accidentally switched on the oven which had some boxes on top of it,” said the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
The footage shows a dog jumping up and placing its paws on the stove to inspect the boxes placed on top and authorities believe that when it jumped down, it accidentally turned the stove on which ignited the boxes and started the house fire.
The homeowners were immediately alerted and woken up by their Apple HomePod sending them a “high heat” notification and were able to get to the fire before it had time to spread through the home.
Officials took this unique situation to remind people about fire safety inside their homes.
“This is a good reminder to always have working smoke alarms inside and outside every sleeping area and on every floor of the home, ensure all combustibles are away from your stovetop/oven, and know two ways out of every room in your home in the event of a fire,” said the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

The tragic fire incident occurred when the siblings reportedly engaged in a heated altercation with their grandmother, who resides in the same house, and purportedly threatened to set her ablaze.

Fearing for her safety, the grandmother promptly sought refuge at the police station to report the looming danger.

In her absence, the brothers allegedly proceeded to set their home ablaze, unaware that their ailing mother was inside the residence, ultimately resulting in her demise.

Upon arrival, firefighters battled tirelessly to extinguish the flames, but unfortunately, the inferno consumed the entire house, and the mother lost her life in the blaze.

The lifeless body of the deceased has been conveyed to the morgue, as law enforcement authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, May 15, Evans Opoku, the Assembly Member for the Abuakwa-Manhyia Electoral Area, asserted that the actions of the brothers appeared to be deliberate.

“So, what he was doing was to burn the house and the grandmother too. Not knowing that the grandmother had left. So, before they realised someone was burnt and it was the guy’s mother.

“They were two, so the police arrested them. The police said that the two people caused the incident, so they arrested them yesterday [Tuesday],” he said.

Firefighters eventually came to the scene after several calls were placed, but the damage had already been done.

After the fire was brought under control, the children, she said, were found burnt beyond recognition under the bed

House fire kills 2; injures another in Volta region https://www.adomonline.com/house-fire-kills-2-injures-another-in-volta-region/ Sun, 25 Sep 2022 16:51:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2165673 A 26-year-old woman at Ahiatsikope, near Dzodze in the Volta Region, Joyce Fianu, and her nine-year-old niece were burnt to death when fire gutted their house last Saturday.

The girl was identified as Christie Fianu.

Meanwhile, an elder sister of the deceased, Mavis Odor, who sustained serious burns, was rushed to a health facility in Accra for treatment.

The midday blaze also destroyed the roof of the house and personal belongings of the family.

The Volta Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Joy Ayim Ameyibor, who conducted the Daily Graphic round the scene last Tuesday, said Joyce sold petroleum products in bottles and other containers which were kept in the kitchen.

Okada

He said on that ill-fated day, an ‘okada’ rider turned up in the house to buy fuel, while she was cooking on a gas cylinder.

As she served the customer, the bottle containing the petrol fell off her hand and the content erupted into flames, which spread rapidly to other parts of the house as result of the explosions from the other containers.

Ms Ameyibor, who is an Assistant Chief Fire Officer 1 (ACFO), said attempts by neighbours to put out the fire and rescue the victims proved futile.

At the time personnel of the GNFS from Dzodze arrived at the scene, the harm had already been caused, he explained.

GNFS team

According to him, the GNFS team saw the two dead bodies outside, close to the entrance of the house.

The bodies, he said, had been conveyed to the Saint Anthony Hospital in Dzodze, while the incident was being investigated.

ACFO Ameyibor expressed misgivings about the rising trend of the retail of fuel in containers in the region and said the practice posed a serious danger to households and the public.

“Under no circumstance should petrol be kept at home,” ACFO Ameyibor maintained.

He urged the assemblies to take a decisive step to halt what he described as the “micro-retailing of fuel” in homes and on mounted stands in the communities.

A man, believed to be in his 30’s, has committed suicide after setting his family house on fire at Kpone in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality of Greater Accra Region.

The lifeless body of the deceased only identified as Tetteh was found on a tree behind the house after setting the fire over the weekend.

Family members in the house revealed the deceased on several occasions threatened to cause harm in the house.

This, according to them, was after his metre was disconnected over the non-payment of electricity bills, an act he blamed on the co-tenants, adding he was at loggerheads with his relations around.

Narrating the incident in an interview with Adom News, a witness, Sherifatu Ibrahim, said the deceased stayed in the room for several minutes after setting the fire with his door locked.

Over fears that he was trapped and may die inside, they later saw the deceased who had sustained burns coming out of the thick smoke but he spoke to nobody.
