The unfortunate incident on Saturday has left residents in shock.

Some residents told Adom News Sam lives alone and has no electricity supply, hence cannot fathom what could have caused the outbreak.

Despite the swift response from firefighters, they arrived at the scene with motorbikes and had to douse the fire with water from nearby homes.

This is because the Sawla District fire tender has been faulty over the past month.

With the cause of the fire yet to be established, the chief of Sawla, Sawlawura Abdulai Nungbaso has appealed to residents to be cautious as the harmattan season sets in.

He also appealed to the government to work on the Sawla fire tender.

The deceased has since been released to the family for burial according to the Vagla tradition.

12 killed, 30 injured in fire outbreak nationwide from January to June – GNFS https://www.adomonline.com/12-killed-30-injured-in-fire-outbreak-nationwide-from-january-to-june-gnfs/ Fri, 09 Aug 2024 13:26:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2431508 A total of 12 people were killed and 30 injured in 3,576 fire outbreaks recorded nationwide from January to June this year, according to statistics from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

This represents a decrease compared to the same period last year when 18 deaths and 90 injuries were reported from 3,448 fire outbreaks.

The estimated cost of damages during this period was GH¢83,591,961.25, while GH¢60,190,209.00 worth of properties were saved.

The Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana National Fire Service, Divisional Officer Grade Three (DOIII) Desmond Ackah, disclosed this information to the Ghanaian Times in Accra, on Tuesday.

He identified some of the major causes of fires as electrical faults from appliances, gas leakages from improper use of LPG stoves and cylinders, indiscriminate burning of refuse, misuse of naked lights such as mosquito coils, candles, lighters, and matches, lightning, and deliberate acts.

DOIII Ackah noted that the Greater Accra Region reported the highest number of fire cases, with 708 incidents, followed by the Ashanti Region with 661 cases.

The North East Region reported the fewest with 17 cases, a decrease from the previous year.

He also highlighted that domestic fires were the most common, accounting for 35.8 per cent of incidents in June 2024, a slight decrease from 36.2 per cent in 2023.

He said bushfires followed, accounting for 17 per cent down from 17.8 per cent in 2023, while industrial fires made up 0.3 per cent, a reduction from 0.4 per cent in 2023.

In addition, he said the Fire Service attended to 285 road traffic crashes within the same period, resulting in 128 fatalities and 1,095 injuries.

The service also responded to 83 rescue operations, recording 15 deaths and 46 injuries.

DOIII Ackah observed an increase in fire cases related to electrical installations, institutional settings, and refuse dumps.

He reported a three per cent increase in out-on-arrival fire cases, reflecting the positive impact of the GNFS’s public fire safety campaigns and improved public ability to manage fires before firefighters arrive.

The PRO announced plans to intensify fire safety audits and inspections at public and private commercial premises to identify hazards and implement mitigation measures.

He said more community fire volunteers would be trained and motivated to prevent and control bushfires through climate resilience strategies such as creating fire belts around farmlands and plantations, encouraging controlled burning, and promoting alternative livelihood programs.

He said the Fire Service would also collaborate with the National Road Safety Authority and other stakeholders to enhance road safety education. DOIII Ackah assured that the GNFS remains committed to intensifying public fire safety campaigns through traditional and social media, focusing on residential areas, lorry stations, market centres, and institutions.

He urged the public to adhere to fire safety protocols to prevent fire outbreaks and protect lives and property across the country.

The incident occurred around 7 PM on Monday, May 27, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.

At least three fire engines were dispatched to the scene to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.

DO2 Nicholas Poku Antwi, who is in charge of regional operations at the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), confirmed the swift deployment of fire engines from Chirapatre, KMA, and Manhyia stations, as the nearest tender at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was out of service.

Despite the extensive damage to the shops, there were no reported casualties. The prompt action of the fire service prevented the fire from causing more widespread destruction in the area.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to DO2 Antwi.

Authorities are working to determine the cause of the blaze and assess the total damage.

“Four shops that the fire engulfed that was where they tackled and now the fire is out. Fire engines from KMA, Manhyia and Chirapatre came because when they saw how the fire was raging, they immediately called two additional pumps to come and make sure the fire was suppressed as early as possible. The items that were salvaged were more than the items that got burnt”, the fire officer stated.

“Nobody got injured. We have to make sure we do excavation and other things and come up with the actual cause of the fire,” he further indicated.

Four fire engines were then dispatched to douse the fire whose cause investigation is yet to be established.

Mr Mensah disclosed that, their 40-year-old guardian who was with them had stepped out to get something when the incident happened.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

However, the Assemblyman said he suspects there was a candle in the room because there is no electricity in the house, hence it couldn’t have been an electrical fault.

“The boy is the woman’s last born and the girl is her granddaughter. The boy was burnt beyond recognition and from where we retrieved the body, it appeared he tried to escape but got trapped.

“The woman is currently devastated and hasn’t said a word since the incident. But for the swift intervention of bystanders, she might have jumped into the fire and died too,” he narrated.

Mr Mensah revealed that, the children may have been saved if firefighters were deployed to the scene.

“I called the Agona Fire Station immediately I heard the news but was told the fire tender is not working so the residents had to get water to douse the fire. Unfortunately, they couldn’t make it,” he said.

The fire, whose cause is yet to be established, started at about 12:24 a.m on Saturday.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) for Fire Service ADO2, Alex Nartey, confirmed the incident in an interview with Adom News.

He said firefighters from the Makola Fire Station arrived at the scene within two minutes but had to call for reinforcement because the fire was fast spreading.

ADO2 Nartey revealed it took them about five hours to douse the fire, adding there were several explosions to the items in the shops.

The PRO said wigs and perfumes were the items mainly sold in the affected shops, and because they are highly combustible, it kept increasing the fire.

“We realised there were gas cylinders because some of the traders cook and leave them in the shops. The lives of our men were in danger, and at a point, they had to jump over walls for safety, but we managed to salvage over 3,000 shops,” he said.

Simms SHS students sleep in classrooms after fire incident https://www.adomonline.com/simms-shs-students-sleep-in-classrooms-after-fire-incident/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 07:17:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2306511 Following a devastating fire that engulfed the boys’ dormitory at SIMMS Senior High School (SHS) in the Ashanti region last Friday, a dire situation has unfolded, leaving many students stranded and without their belongings.

Some students have been allowed to return home, while those remaining are forced to use classrooms as makeshift sleeping quarters.

According to affected students who spoke anonymously to Citi News, their frustration is mounting, and they are urging authorities to address the urgent accommodation issue.

They are also appealing to the government to resume construction of the abandoned dormitory block project that has remained dormant for over a decade.

Background

The fire incident on Friday ravaged the boys’ dormitory at Simms Senior High School, leaving behind a trail of destruction that included the loss of student essentials like trunks, beds, books, buckets, and clothing from four rooms. The first-year students primarily occupied the first floor, while the second-year students were housed on the ground floor.

Although the prompt response by Ghana National Fire Service personnel contained the flames to the first floor, the building’s compromised structure poses a considerable risk to students on the ground level.

Consequently, students on the ground floor have been advised against using the area for safety reasons, instead utilizing it solely for changing clothes and storing personal belongings. Nights find them sleeping in classrooms after study hours, as the damaged building remains perilous.

Despite recent achievements in sports and academics, such as winning the Ashanti region inter-school soccer competition and securing a bronze medal at the Regional National Science and Maths Quiz, Simms Senior High School is grappling with infrastructure challenges.

Students, speaking anonymously, express concerns about the abandoned boys’ dormitory project initiated over ten years ago. They believe completing this project would significantly alleviate their current accommodation predicament.

Under the looming uncertainty of their nightly arrangements, students find it challenging to concentrate on their studies. While investigations by the Ghana National Fire Service are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, no casualties were reported.

The devastating inferno raged for hours and destroyed two separate rooms dedicated to Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) as well as a Mental Health Unit.

Several items, including vaccine carriers, furniture, air conditioning units, glass doors, T&J ceilings, and other health equipment valued at over GH¢10,000, were destroyed in the fire.

Mr. George Mireku Asiamah, Operations Officer of the Asuogyaman National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that, NADMO had reports that indicated a section of the health facility had been consumed in flames [August 23] at approximately 1600 hours.

He said that a staff member at the health centre reported hearing a distinct sound coming from the ceiling fan regulator, which subsequently ignited and began to burn.

Before the Fire Service officers arrived, Mr. Asiamah said they used their extinguishers to successfully contain the fire with the help of some community members and staff.

By that time, the fire had already been extinguished.

After a thorough assessment of the situation, Mr. Asiamah suggested that, the root cause of the damage could be attributed to an electrical fault.

He said the necessary report had been completely filed and will eventually be forwarded to the appropriate authorities.

He pointed out that, over the next few weeks, the rooms will undergo reconstruction.

“Authorities must expedite their efforts to ensure the prompt opening of the facility, as it serves as an essential healthcare centre for residents of the area” Mr. Asiamah added.

The GNA gathered that, the establishment was among the most frequented health facilities in the area, providing essential medical care to the public.

The Asuogyaman District Chief Executive, Samuel Kwame Agyekum, and the Coordinating Director embarked on an inspection visit following the reports of the fire.

They are set to convene a management meeting to deliberate on strategies for the reconstruction of the fire-ravaged facility.

In a related development, the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman constituency, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, has taken proactive measures to address the prevailing issue.

66 dead, 24 injured in fire outbreaks https://www.adomonline.com/66-dead-24-injured-in-fire-outbreaks/ Thu, 24 Aug 2023 13:51:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2286753 At least 66 persons died and 24 others suffered injuries due to fire outbreaks and other related incidents in the first half of this year as against 69 deaths and 162 injuries the previous year, the Greater Accra Regional Fire Command has said.

Similarly, 662 fire outbreaks were recorded within six months as against 640 fires within the same period last year, representing three percent increase in the fire outbreaks attributed to human behavior in the region.

The Accra Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Grade One, Roberta Aggrey Ghanson, disclosed this at an engagement with journalists in Accra yesterday to discuss issues related to fire outbreaks in the region.

It also formed part of this year’s fire educational campaign to create fire safety awareness to the public.

The programme, which was on the theme “60 years of existence, fire safety: the choice for safer environment”, brought together Municipal Fire Commanders, senior and junior officers from the regional command.

ACFO I Ghanson said domestic fires top the cases with 234 as compared to 197 fires in 2022, representing an increase of three per cent, all attributable to human behaviour.

She stated that the media had contributed immensely in bringing the Service’s vision to bare considering its function of educating the public.

ACFO1 Ghanson said the Command also in the first half of 2023 responded to 22 rescue incidents as well as 22 road traffic accidents.

She said the estimated cost of damages caused by fire outbreaks in the first half of this year was GH¢34,590,914.00.

ACFO1 Ghanson said the Ghana National fire Service (GNFS) would sensitise members of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and market women.

She said the Service would also inspect national installations, undertake stimulation exercise, and meet with operators of event centres, club houses, drinking spots and night clubs.

The Accra Regional Fire Safety Officer, Divisional Officer Grade One (DOI), Evans Osei Owusu, stated that the role of the media was crucial in addressing fire safety issues in the country.

He urged journalists to collaborate with the GNFS in its education drive to ensure that lives and properties were saved in the country.

DOI Owusu urged the public to desist from attacking GNFS personnel while on duty.

The Deputy Director of Operations, DOI Joseph Kofi Forson, mentioned accessibility, inadequate source of water, negative attitudes as some of the things affecting GNFS’ operations.

He urged the public to make fire safety a priority, which according to him was a shared responsibility.

A representative from the Ghana Institute of Architects, Mr David Parkins, commended personnel of the GNFS for ensuring that lives and properties were saved even at the peril of the own lives.

Aggressive media campaign has led to less fire outbreaks – GNFS https://www.adomonline.com/aggressive-media-campaign-has-led-to-less-fire-outbreaks-gnfs/ Thu, 06 Jul 2023 16:17:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2269373 The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Command has attributed the consistent drop in fire outbreaks recorded in the country from January 2023 to the aggressive media fire prevention campaign and fire safety education embarked on by the fire safety directorate.

In January 2023, a total of 827 fire outbreaks were recorded, this figure, however, reduced to 728 in February a decrease of 99 representing 11.9%, 622 fire outbreaks were recorded in March a decrease of 106 representing 14.5% and in April 506 incidents recorded a decrease by 116 representing 18.6%, in May.

The incidents came further down to 428 a decrease by 78 representing 15.4% and in June it trickled down to 337 cases a decrease by 91 representing 21.3%.

According to the Chief Fire Officer, intensive media fire safety campaigns, floats and fire safety education in second-cycle schools, institutions, lorry stations, religious bodies and other places of public congregations across the country have yielded positive results.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Larteh Fire Station, Chief Fire Officer, Julius A. Kuunor, indicated that the command is hopeful that beneficiaries of these fire safety campaigns will share their knowledge with family and friends to expand public awareness creation and help reduce fire incidents to the barest minimum by December 2023.

Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery, who lauded the efforts of all stakeholders who donated to the office complex indicated that government will continue to partner with private individuals and organizations to provide fire cover for all communities.

He added that the support of the government remains a priority to help the fire command achieve its mandate as plans are far advanced for the retooling of the fire service.

Fire consumes five-bedroom house at Pankrono estate https://www.adomonline.com/fire-consumes-five-bedroom-house-at-pankrono-estate/ Wed, 21 Jun 2023 18:12:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2263177 A five-bedroom house at Pankrono Estate in the Old Tafo Municipality of the Ashanti Region fell victim to a destructive fire that engulfed the entire property.

On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at approximately 5:30 pm, firefighters swiftly responded to a distress call.

However, upon their arrival, they faced initial resistance from some residents who expressed discontent over what they perceived as a delayed response.

Despite the initial resistance, the firefighters gained access to the scene thanks to the intervention of the area’s Assembly Member.

Additionally, the police were called in to provide protection during the firefighting operation.

DOIII Peter Addai, the Regional Public Relations Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service, reported that the diligent firefighters successfully contained the flames, preventing them from spreading to neighboring houses.

Regrettably, the fire consumed the entire five-bedroom house along with its contents, resulting in a tragic loss.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown at present. However, investigations have been launched to determine the underlying cause.

Thankfully, there were no casualties reported during the incident.

In light of this unfortunate event, Mr. Addai stressed the importance of promptly notifying firefighters in the event of a fire outbreak.

He urged the general public to swiftly contact the fire service to ensure a rapid response, thus minimizing the potential for further damage.

The incidents were recorded at the school in a week. Some of the affected students complained that all their personal belongings had been destroyed by the fire.

They told Ghana News Agency (GNA) that their monies for upkeep had also been consumed by the fire leaving them stranded.

The students expressing their grievances and worries said “it is better we die in front of our parents than to die here and our corpses will not be found.”

One student lamented bitterly “now all our things are burnt, we don’t even have toothpaste. I want to go, I don’t want the school again, it is not a force. If I go and sleep outside, I will go and sleep outside than be consumed by fire.”

“The classroom we are sleeping in is burning again,” another distressed student cried.

The agitation of the students began on Sunday evening, January 22, 2023, when the first fire incident occurred at about 20:20 burning one-storey building hostel accommodation of female students and displacing about 114 students.

The affected students were subsequently moved into a temporal hostel facility but that was also guttered by fire on Monday night January 23 at about 8:19 pm, barely 24 hours after the first incident occurred.

The school authority again settled the students in a classroom block and the Assembly Hall while steps were taken to stabilise them for academic activities to return to normal.

However, the classroom block that housed the displaced students was also guttered by fire on Thursday night, January 26, 2023.

According to Ghana News Agency (GNA) source at the school, four students and a National Service Personnel collapsed upon the mention of “fire” on Thursday night and were rushed to the Upper West Regional and Wa Municipal Hospitals.

The National Service Person has since been discharged while the four students are still receiving treatment at the hospital.

Fire outbreak: 14 lives lost in Ashanti Region since beginning of 2022 https://www.adomonline.com/fire-outbreak-14-lives-lost-in-ashanti-region-since-beginning-of-2022/ Thu, 18 Aug 2022 09:55:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2150963 Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana National Fire Service of the Ashanti Regional Command, D.O. III Peter Addai, has said the Ashanti Region has recorded 14 lives lost to fire incidents since the beginning of the year.

According to him, the occurrences took place due to the weather conditions experienced lately.

“We recorded a lot of bush fires because of the worse weather during the early part of the year. The bush fires we recorded increased but the rest of the fire incidents are actually coming down,” he stated.

“From March down to today, the fires have reduced. After the harmattan season, we are recording a downward trend and we are putting in measures to ensure the downward trend continues,” he added.

The figures, he said, represent more than a hundred percent increase from the figure recorded in the first half of 2021, which recorded five cases of death.

“Ranging from domestic, and industrial to bush fires, 722 fire cases were recorded in the first half of 2022, which is 109 more cases in 2021,” Mr Addai noted.

He further stated: “We actually recorded higher numbers because people were phoning in after we embarked on a public sensitisation.”

The PRO mentioned that the recent incident of a pregnant mother and her two male children dying in their torched home at Ohwim brought the total fire death cases to 14.

The regional fire and police commands have since launched investigations into circumstances leading to the cause of the fire.

The fire unit, however, bemoaned the accessibility of fire hydrants distributed across the region.

Mr Addai revealed that the immediate environment of the fire incident at Ohwim lacked a hydrant, forcing fire tenders to call in for more support.

“Even though the tenders went with water, they needed more because the house was well alight. We called in for assistance and the Breman station also went to join them to be able to fight the fire,” he noted.

“The immediate environs of the place where the emergency happened does not have a fire hydrant around there so we had to move our tanks there to be able to get water,” he added.

However, he said the Fire Service is in talks with the Ghana Water Company to help install more hydrants in the region to effectively respond to fire incidents.

“In developed countries, we realise that in every 100m there are hydrants installed along major routes but over here, we don’t have it like that,” he indicated.

Meanwhile, the command has contacted the Ghana Water Company Limited which they have promised to install more.

According to him, a few hydrants have been installed and are making use of it but wishes to have more to fight fires effectively.

“For those in remote areas, we’ve created boreholes to connect them to big tanks where we can pick water from. So that’s the alternative arrangements we’ve made for places in remote areas,” he said.

This, according to reports, was a slight increase over the figure recorded during the same period in 2021, which stood at 217 in 2021.

Speaking to Adom News, the Northern Regional spokesperson of the Ghana National Fire Service, ADOII Baba Hudu said most of the outbreaks were caused by electrical faults which stemmed from circuit overload, electrical installation and others.

“When you look at the incidents or the fires that were recorded over the period, most of the causes of these fires were electrical faults,” he noted.

“However, he noted that the figure this year seems encouraging and has motivated the personnel to help reduce disasters in the region and the country as a whole,” he added.

“When you look at the last year 2021, the region recorded 217 incidents and out of these incidents, comparing it to 2022, we recorded 218 incidents that are an increase of only one, which is a minimal or marginal increase of just 0.14 percent and this what gives us that motivation to let the general public be aware that we are making a progress but we still need to do more”, he said.

“The fires are preventable, the accidents are preventable if only we take our safety protocols into consideration.

Residents at Bugnateng, a suburb of Tempane in the Upper East Region, are counting their losses after fire swept through a 16-bedroom house.

The frustrated tenants say the incident occurred at about 4:30 pm on Sunday.

The landlord, Azong Philip, told Adom News’ Halidas Dasmani that he was away from home when he had a distress call about the incident.

Upon arrival, he called the Fire Service only to be told the tender has no fuel.

He, therefore, had to send money for the fuel but they still came late while the fire destroyed all property with nothing to salvage.

The cause of the fire, however, is not known.

One of the tenants, Solomon Alhassan, claimed the landlord sent GHS500 for the fuel and they are in pain because they still lost their belongings.

The Tempane District Chief Executive, Issaka Anabida, has since visited the scene and expressed worry about the situation.

He has appealed to the general public to come to the aid of the victims, especially accommodating them in their homes.

11 newborn babies die in hospital fire https://www.adomonline.com/11-newborn-babies-die-in-hospital-fire/ Thu, 26 May 2022 08:57:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2118422 Eleven newborn babies have died in a hospital fire in the western city of Tivaouane in Senegal, the country’s president has said.

The fire at Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh Hospital was in the maternity department, President Macky Sall tweeted.

Initial reports suggest the fire was caused by a short circuit, according to Senegalese politicians.

Three babies were saved from the fire, said the city’s mayor, Demba Diop Sy.

The fire spread very quickly and emergency services were still at the scene, Mr Sy told local media.

The hospital had been newly inaugurated, according to AFP, citing local media reports.

Senegal’s President Macky Sall said the fire was in the maternity department of the hospital

“To their mothers and their families, I express my deepest sympathy,” President Sall wrote in a tweet.

“This situation is very unfortunate and extremely painful,” Health Minister Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr said from Geneva, where he was attending a World Health Organization meeting.

He said an investigation was underway and he would be cutting his trip short to return to Senegal immediately.

The incident has sparked a wave of indignation on social media over the state of the country’s healthcare provision.

Opposition MP Mamadou Lamine Diallo criticised the government, tweeting: “More babies burned in a public hospital… This is unacceptable”.

A similar incident occurred in the northern town of Linguère last year, when four newborn babies were killed after a fire broke out at a hospital’s maternity ward. At the time, the mayor said there was an electrical fault in the air conditioning unit of the maternity ward.

The tragedy also follows a national outcry over the death of a woman in labour, Astou Sokhna, who died while reportedly begging for a Caesarean during her 20-hour labour ordeal. Her unborn child also died.

A raging fire has swept through a warehouse at Brigade near Weija in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

The fire, which destroyed property running into hundreds of thousands of cedis, reportedly occurred on Friday night.

About five vehicles, 10 engines and other accessories at Central Automotive Company were lost to the fire incident.

The timely intervention of the Weija Fire Station officers prevented the fire from spreading to nearby residential property.

The leader of the team, ADO 2 Eric Duffuor, stated the cause of the fire is not yet known but investigations have commenced.

However, eyewitnesses suspect the fire was caused by power fluctuations the area has experienced for sometime now.

They say the fire started shortly after the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) restored power after an outage.

Some of the witnesses revealed that many of the cars have been burnt to ashes while some workers managed to drive others outside.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of the company, Daniel Kwesi Boadu, told Adom News‘ Kofi Adjei he is still in shock and yet to come to terms with the incident.

ADO2 Duffour has urged automobile companies and other shops to always switch off their metres before closing to save lives and property.
