In a strongly worded statement posted on Facebook, Bawumia said recent dismissals of public servants, attacks on journalists, and military raids on former government officials’ homes signal a dangerous departure from democratic norms.

“There is a general atmosphere of insecurity, including attacks on journalists, the use of our military to raid the homes of former government officials and communities, as well as mobs attacking innocent individuals and state institutions,” Bawumia stated. “This more closely resembles a military takeover than a peaceful democratic transition.”

The former vice president, who conceded defeat in Ghana’s 2024 elections and pledged to support the new administration, said he could no longer remain silent in the face of what he described as systematic political persecution.

“The least a party that campaigned on jobs could do under conditions of unemployment is to also innovate and create jobs rather than dismiss people,” he said, accusing the government of arbitrarily sacking workers employed under the previous administration.

Bawumia also claimed that even non-partisan directors in the public service were being removed for merely being associated with politicians from the previous government. He warned that alleged plans to terminate the contracts of security personnel, nurses, and teachers hired before the new administration took office would be “most unfortunate.”

He called on President Mahama to act swiftly and “be a president for all Ghanaians by putting a stop to these developments, reversing the unfair dismissals, and protecting all our citizens.”

“We must advance our democracy. We must protect our state institutions. We must uphold our Constitution,” he said. “Ghana can do better. Ghana must do better!”

Be a President for all and reverse the unfair dismissals – Bawumia to Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/be-a-president-for-all-and-reverse-the-unfair-dismissals-bawumia-to-mahama/ Thu, 20 Feb 2025 07:21:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2506597

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged President John Dramani Mahama to uphold his promise of being a president for all by reversing the recent dismissals of public sector employees.

The Mahama government, through a directive by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, has revoked the employment of several individuals hired by the previous administration.

The decision has drawn widespread criticism, with Dr. Bawumia joining calls for President Mahama to halt the dismissals and protect affected workers.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday night, Dr. Bawumia noted that while he had intended to give the new government time to settle and focus on national development, he could not remain silent as the rights of legitimately employed Ghanaians were being violated.

“To look away whilst these ills persist is to abandon my responsibility to remind President Mahama and his government of the overriding duty to live by the democratic tenets envisioned in the 1992 Constitution and do justice and right to all manner of persons,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He accused the Mahama administration of unfairly targeting individuals employed under the previous government, calling it ironic that a party that campaigned on job creation was now rendering people jobless.

“The least a party that campaigned on jobs could do under conditions of unemployment is to also innovate and create jobs rather than dismiss people,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia urged President Mahama to protect all citizens and reverse the dismissals, emphasizing the need to uphold democratic values.

“I call on His Excellency President Mahama to be a president for all Ghanaians by putting a stop to these developments, reversing the unfair dismissals, and protecting all our citizens.”

“We must advance our democracy. We must protect our state institutions. We must uphold our Constitution. Ghana can do better. Ghana must do better.”

Dr. Bawumia also raised concerns over rising violent attacks on individuals and state institutions by organized groups.

Digital economy holds the keys to Africa’s prosperity and job creation – Bawumia https://www.adomonline.com/digital-economy-holds-the-keys-to-africas-prosperity-and-job-creation-bawumia/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 07:03:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2505165 Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana, has highlighted the transformative power of the digital economy in shaping Africa’s future.

Speaking at Harvard University on Saturday, 15th February, he emphasised that digitalisation is no longer a luxury but a necessity for survival and prosperity in the 21st century.

“We are in the midst of a global digital revolution,” he stated. “Artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things are not just buzzwords; they are reshaping our world.”

According to him, Africa must act with boldness and foresight to avoid missing out on the Fourth Industrial Revolution, as it did with previous ones.

Dr Bawumia detailed Ghana’s strides in digital transformation, citing the significant progress made over the past eight years.

He explained that digitalisation was key to solving long-standing systemic issues, particularly in areas such as financial inclusion, healthcare, agriculture, and public service delivery.

“Our focus is on digital technology that can solve our problems,” he asserted.

“We are not looking to have driverless cars or humanoid robots at this stage. We want technology that can improve access to credit, enhance public service efficiency, and boost economic opportunities.”

He noted that initiatives such as the GhanaCard, the digital property address system, and mobile money interoperability had created a more formalised, transparent, and financially inclusive economy.

One of the standout achievements Dr Bawumia highlighted was Ghana’s success in financial inclusion, facilitated by mobile money interoperability.

“When we assumed office in 2017, 70% of Ghanaians had no bank accounts,” he revealed.

“However, with mobile money interoperability, we have extended financial services to over 90% of adults, making Ghana the only country in Africa with 100% access to financial inclusion.”

This has not only facilitated seamless transactions but has also fostered entrepreneurship and e-commerce, enabling businesses to thrive without the need for physical infrastructure.

Beyond financial services, he underscored the impact of digitalisation on governance, agriculture, and healthcare.

The introduction of the Citizens App and the integration of government databases have improved efficiency and accessibility in public services. In the agricultural sector, the digitisation of farms and farmer databases has enhanced productivity and ensured better traceability of produce.

“Ghana is the only cocoa-producing country in the world with a fully digitised cocoa management system,” he said.

He also noted that Ghana now has the largest medical drone delivery service in the world, helping to address healthcare challenges in remote areas.

Concluding his address, Dr Bawumia stressed that Africa’s economic future depends on its ability to harness digital technology effectively.

“The digital economy holds the key to unlocking Africa’s vast potential and creating jobs for the youth,” he said. He called for increased investment, leadership, and collaboration across governments, businesses, and educational institutions to build a strong digital ecosystem.

“By working together, we can build a future where every African has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to a brighter tomorrow.”

Bawumia wows Harvard University with Ghana’s digitalisation drive achievements https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-wows-harvard-university-with-ghanas-digitalisation-drive-achievements/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 07:01:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2505156 Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Former Vice President of Ghana, captivated an audience at Harvard University on Saturday, February 15, as he highlighted Ghana’s impressive achievements in digital transformation.

Addressing students, faculty, and policy experts at the African Development Conference, Bawumia outlined how Ghana has strategically embraced digitalisation to modernise its economy, improve public service delivery, and create jobs.

He stated, “Africa does not lack talent. What we lack is deliberateness, leadership, and investment to create the ecosystems where innovations and innovators thrive.” He emphasised the crucial role of technology in driving economic progress.

Key achievements Bawumia discussed included the introduction of the Ghanacard, a biometric national ID system that has provided over 85% of adults with unique identities, facilitating financial inclusion, taxation, and access to government services.

Another notable initiative was the digital property address system, which mapped every inch of the country and resolved a longstanding issue.

“A modern economy simply cannot function without a reliable address system,” Bawumia said, emphasising the efficiency these innovations have brought to governance and business.

He also discussed Ghana’s leadership in digital payments, highlighting the success of Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI), which has enabled over 90% of the adult population to access financial services, making Ghana the only African country with universal financial inclusion.

“Ghana is at the cutting edge of digital payments technology,” he declared, noting the country’s global recognition for mobile money regulation.

The health sector’s digitisation was another focal point. Bawumia detailed how Ghana’s collaboration with Zipline has revolutionised emergency medical supply deliveries through drones, creating the world’s largest medical drone delivery service. This innovation has significantly improved healthcare delivery, especially in remote areas.

He also pointed to digitisation in agriculture, where a biometric farmer database has enhanced transparency, planning, and financial access for farmers.

Concluding his address, Bawumia championed Africa’s potential to lead in the digital revolution, urging policymakers to adopt a mindset of possibilities. “Digitalisation is not merely a luxury but a necessity for survival and prosperity in the 21st century,” he said.

His inspiring presentation received a standing ovation, solidifying Ghana’s position as a leader in Africa’s digital transformation.

Bawumia highlights Ghana’s digital milestones at Harvard University https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-highlights-ghanas-digital-milestones-at-harvard-university/ Sun, 16 Feb 2025 08:13:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2504730 Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, impressed students at Harvard University in the United States when he delivered a lecture on Ghana’s digitalisation journey and its impact on economic transformation.

Speaking at Harvard University on Saturday as the keynote speaker on the theme “Africa Beyond Borders: A Myth or a Mandate for Africa’s Progress,” Dr Bawumia outlined Ghana’s digitalisation initiatives and their positive contributions to economic growth.

Dr Bawumia first reflected on how Africa had missed out on the first, second, and third industrial revolutions before stressing the necessity of embracing the Fourth Industrial Revolution to drive economic transformation.

“Policymakers in Africa must adopt a mindset of possibilities. We should embrace technology and not be intimidated by it. We must believe that we can leapfrog advanced nations in many areas if we put our minds to it,” Dr Bawumia stated. He highlighted how Ghana’s digitalisation efforts, in which he played an instrumental role, are addressing long-standing challenges that have hindered modern economic growth.

“For over 60 years after independence, Ghana had a largely informal system without many of the basic elements necessary for a modern economy. Today, we are building a formal, data-driven economy to compete in the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” he said.

Ghana’s digital success story

Dr Bawumia noted that in the past eight years, Ghana has pursued an “aggressive policy of digitalisation” to “jumpstart the economic transformation of our country.”

“Our focus has been on digital technology that addresses real challenges. At this stage of our development, we are not looking at driverless cars or humanoid robots. Instead, we seek technology that solves problems in agriculture, health, education, access to credit, payment system efficiency, public service delivery, and revenue mobilisation,” he explained.

Dr Bawumia pointed out that, before this digitalisation drive, the issue was largely seen as peripheral and not central to Ghana’s national development agenda.

“My focus on digitalisation as Vice President was initially ridiculed by political opponents. But I remained committed to my vision of using digitalisation to address everyday challenges faced by Ghanaians while building an engine for economic growth and job creation,” he stated.

Expounding on Ghana’s digital transformation, Dr Bawumia demonstrated how the country has tackled long-standing challenges through technology.

“One of the biggest challenges was the inability to uniquely identify individuals. It was possible to be born, live an entire life, die, and be buried in Ghana without any official record of your existence. This made it difficult to access public services such as acquiring a driver’s licence, passport, or government permits,” he explained.

He also highlighted the absence of a functional national property address system, which he described as a major obstacle to economic modernisation.

To address these issues, Dr Bawumia cited the issuance of Ghana Cards to 85% of the adult population and the implementation of a digital address system as transformative steps.

Other key challenges being addressed through digitalisation include:

  • A large informal sector and over-reliance on cash payments, which has been mitigated through mobile money interoperability, making Ghana one of the most financially inclusive countries in the world.
  • Fragmented and manual government databases, which have been streamlined through the digitisation of services such as passport applications, driver’s licences, and business registrations.
  • Inefficient manual records in healthcare facilities, which have been replaced with digital health records in government hospitals.
  • Poor healthcare access in remote areas, now addressed by Ghana’s world-renowned medical drone delivery service.

A major pathway for job creation

Beyond modernising the economy, Dr Bawumia emphasised that Ghana’s digital transformation has created job opportunities and strengthened businesses, particularly through digital payment systems.

“The digital payments infrastructure, along with the digital property address system, is boosting e-commerce in Ghana and creating jobs,” he said.

“E-commerce is thriving in Ghana. Many sales now take place via Instagram, Facebook, and websites. Individuals who cannot afford to rent or build physical shops can now conduct business online at little cost, with deliveries facilitated by digital addresses and payments enabled through mobile money interoperability.”

A call to African Leaders

Concluding his address, Dr Bawumia urged African leaders to embrace digital technology to unlock the continent’s vast potential.

“The digital economy holds the key to unlocking Africa’s potential and creating jobs for our youth. By working together—governments, businesses, educators, and innovators—we can build a future where every African has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to a brighter tomorrow.”

Bawumia was a wrong candidate, we don’t want him for 2028 – NPP supporters in Kumasi declare https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-was-a-wrong-candidate-we-dont-want-him-for-2028-npp-supporters-in-kumasi-declare/ Tue, 04 Feb 2025 15:43:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2500704

A group known as the Concerned Traders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kumasi has called for a new flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, rejecting any attempt to reintroduce Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s candidate.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, the spokesperson for the group, Benjamin Ofori, stated that the NPP’s humiliating defeat in the 2024 elections highlighted the need for a different and winnable candidate.

He attributed the party’s electoral loss to unpopular government decisions and what he described as the selection of the “wrong candidate” in Dr. Bawumia.

“The assumption that Dr. Bawumia would secure the northern and Islamic votes did not materialize. Instead, the party suffered significant losses in these areas, eroding the gains the NPP had made since 1992,” Ofori stated.

The group emphasized that under Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy, the NPP lost four out of the five northern regions, calling the outcome “embarrassing.”

They also pointed out that even in the Vice President’s home region, the margin of victory over former President John Mahama was minimal compared to the 2020 elections. Meanwhile, Mahama secured a much larger victory margin in his own home region.

Additionally, the traders group lamented the NPP’s failure to secure a single parliamentary seat in the Upper East and Upper West regions, arguing that Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy failed to mobilize Zongo and Christian voters.

They further noted that the party lost 58 parliamentary seats nationwide and experienced a 24% decline in votes in its stronghold, the Ashanti Region.

Rejecting comparisons to President Akufo-Addo’s three-time presidential bids, Ofori stressed that Akufo-Addo consistently secured higher percentages in his losses—49.7% in 2008 and 47.7% in 2012—compared to Bawumia’s 38.4% in 2024.

The group warned that pushing for Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy again would keep the NPP in opposition for at least 12 years.

“If the party truly wants to return to power in 2028, it must choose a candidate who is a living testimony of good leadership and sound economic policies,” Ofori added.

They appealed to party members to resist any attempts to impose Dr. Bawumia as the NPP’s 2028 candidate and called for a broad-based reflection on the 2024 electoral results to ensure the party selects a stronger candidate for the next election.

At the time of writing, the NPP leadership has yet to respond to the concerns raised by the Kumasi-based traders, as the party focuses on rebuilding.

One of the biggest threats to Africa’s democracy today is ‘Next Meal’ – Bawumia https://www.adomonline.com/one-of-the-biggest-threats-to-africas-democracy-today-is-next-meal-bawumia/ Mon, 27 Jan 2025 11:06:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2497469 The former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has warned that one of the biggest threats to democracy today is what he refers to as “the Next Meal.”

Speaking in Nigeria on Monday, January 27, 2025, Bawumia addressed an audience on the vital connection between democracy, good governance, and political integrity in the context of Sub-Saharan Africa.

He pointed out that the fundamental value of democracy is not just in the process of electing leaders but in ensuring that citizens’ needs, especially their basic survival, are met.

Bawumia began his speech by quoting the late Nelson Mandela, one of Africa’s greatest leaders, who famously said, “As long as poverty, injustice, and gross inequality exist in our world, none of us can truly rest.”

The former Vice President highlighted the continuing relevance of Mandela’s words, stressing that true democracy must work towards ending these persistent societal ills.

His speech underscored the fact that, for democracy to be meaningful, it must deliver tangible benefits such as access to essential public goods and services, opportunities for economic advancement, and a fair society for all citizens.

Dr. Bawumia explained that democracy should not merely be about governance structures but about achieving concrete outcomes that improve people’s lives.

For Bawumia, the best democracy is one that efficiently and effectively provides for citizens while ensuring that no one is left behind.

He went on to highlight the dire situation in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the World Bank estimated that two-thirds of the global population living in extreme poverty resides.

Such figures, he said, should motivate African leaders to act decisively, as failure to address poverty poses a threat not only to the economy but also to the very foundation of democracy.

Further, Dr. Bawumia referenced the 2024 World Bank report on Nigeria, revealing that more than half of the Nigerian population lives in multidimensional poverty.

He argued that such widespread poverty hinders political integrity, as people struggling to meet their most basic needs are less likely to engage with democratic processes or trust the political system.

“When the priority is the next meal, democracy becomes a secondary concern,” he stated. His comments served as a call for African leaders to address the root causes of poverty in order to preserve democratic values and social stability.

In conclusion, Bawumia made a powerful appeal for democracies in Africa to focus on eradicating poverty and promoting equal opportunities.

He stated that the best democracy is one that delivers on its promises to the people, where individuals do not have to worry about survival before engaging in democratic processes.

“Only when people are assured of their basic needs can they fully embrace the values of democracy,” he concluded, stressing that the future of African democracy depends on effective governance that prioritizes citizens’ welfare.

Despite the imperfections of democracy, it remains the preferred form of governance – Bawumia asserts https://www.adomonline.com/despite-the-imperfections-of-democracy-it-remains-the-preferred-form-of-governance-bawumia-asserts/ Mon, 27 Jan 2025 11:01:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2497463 The former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has emphasized that despite its imperfections, democracy remains the preferred form of governance that guarantees individual liberties and rights.

Speaking in Nigeria on Monday, January 27, 2025, Bawumia reflected on the enduring value of democracy, acknowledging that while it may not be flawless, it offers the best framework for protecting fundamental freedoms.

He quoted Winston S. Churchill, who famously said, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others,” highlighting the pragmatic truth that, despite its flaws, democracy remains superior to other forms of governance.

Bawumia underscored the importance of democracy in ensuring the protection of individual rights and freedoms, noting that the process of self-governance, while imperfect, is preferable to any alternative.

He reiterated that the strength of democratic systems lies in their ability to safeguard freedoms while allowing for checks and balances.

“It’s not a perfect system, but it’s the best we’ve got,” Bawumia said, reinforcing the argument that democracy enables accountability and fosters the active participation of citizens in the political process.

In his address, Dr. Bawumia also referenced the findings of the 2023 Open Society Barometer report, which revealed that 92% of Nigerians believe it is important to live in a democratically governed country.

He pointed to the fact that 69% of Nigerians prefer democracy over other forms of governance, reinforcing his belief that democracy has firmly taken root in Nigeria.

“This should leave no doubt that democracy has been embraced by the Nigerian people,” Bawumia asserted, acknowledging the widespread commitment to democratic ideals in the country.

Dr. Bawumia further urged Nigerians to strengthen their democratic institutions and practices. He explained that while democracy in Nigeria may still face challenges, the desire for democratic governance among the population offers a solid foundation for future progress.

“Let us strengthen democracy, for it is through robust democratic systems that we can achieve greater prosperity and political stability,” he urged, calling on leaders and citizens alike to continue working toward a more inclusive and participatory democracy.

My early concession in 2024 polls was for Ghana’s democracy and peace – Bawumia https://www.adomonline.com/my-early-concession-in-2024-polls-was-for-ghanas-democracy-and-peace-bawumia/ Mon, 27 Jan 2025 10:58:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2497455 Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has explained that his early concession in the 2024 presidential election was made in the supreme interest of Ghana’s democracy and peace.

Speaking on Monday, 27 January, during a discourse on democracy, governance, and political integrity in Nigeria, Dr. Bawumia reflected on the events that led to his decision, highlighting the importance of maintaining national stability during electoral processes.

In his address, Dr. Bawumia revealed that he had anticipated the electoral results would take between 48 to 72 hours to be officially declared by the Electoral Commission.

Aware of the rising tension and the potential for violence if the announcement was prolonged, he decided to act swiftly.

“I was cognizant of the tension and potential violence that could result if there was a long-drawn-out process of announcing the results. Indeed, the tension had begun to mount,” he said.

Recognizing the volatile environment that could have escalated into unrest, Dr. Bawumia explained that his decision to concede the election early was a calculated move to prevent unnecessary conflict.

“I, therefore, took the decision to hold a press conference at 9 a.m. the next morning to concede the election to my opponent even before the EC had announced any collated official results,” he stated.

The former President’s concession came as part of his broader commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Ghana’s democratic processes.

According to him, his swift action aimed not only to reduce the potential for violence but also to set an example of political maturity and respect for the democratic system.

He stated that this approach emphasized his dedication to the peaceful transfer of power, which is essential for the long-term health of any democracy.

In his remarks, Dr. Bawumia underscored the significance of strong political integrity in ensuring that governance remains effective and transparent.

His concession, he said, was an effort to protect the democratic principles Ghana has upheld, reassuring citizens that the electoral process would not be compromised by unnecessary delays or uncertainty.

Veteran Ghanaian actress Adwoa Smart has refuted rumors that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia gifted her a house.

Speaking in an interview on Accra FM, the actress dismissed the claims as false, attributing the rumors to bloggers spreading fake news.

Adwoa Smart clarified that she has only met Dr. Bawumia once, at the funeral of veteran musician Nana Ampadu, and has never sought favors from him or anyone else.

“By God’s grace, I’m comfortable. I’m not where I want to be, but I’m content. I’ve never gone to anyone asking for anything,” she added.

However, she stressed that the rumors are baseless and urged the public to disregard them.

Did Bawumia secure Northern votes for NPP? – NAPO on election defeat https://www.adomonline.com/did-bawumia-secure-northern-votes-for-npp-napo-on-election-defeat/ Tue, 14 Jan 2025 12:41:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2492663

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, better known as NAPO, has criticized the tribal undertone in discussions about the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the recent election.

In an interview with Accra-based Channel One TV, NAPO reacted strongly to questions suggesting his underperformance in delivering Ashanti votes, which has been attributed to the party’s humiliating defeat.

“Did Bawumia, the Northerner, bring the Northern votes?” NAPO fired back, remarking that the question was triggering and unintelligent.

The 2024 NPP Vice Presidential Candidate stated that their loss is a shared responsibility, noting that voter turnout across the country contributed to the NPP’s decline.

“Never ask that question again because it might provoke someone to insult you. When I hear that comment, I am triggered to insult someone. No matter who you blame, the party has lost. Millions of Ghanaians didn’t vote and NPP lost millions of vote, did it all come from only Ashanti?” he retorted.

He pointed out that in the Ashanti Region which is a key NPP stronghold, voter turnout was 65%, among the highest in the country, and urged critics to avoid singling out any region.

“Tribes should not be an element in the debate at all. it’s a slippery slope we are setting up. Even Volta and Greater Accra saw shifts in votes. This is not about tribes; it’s about collective responsibility.”

Arguments prior to the elections suggested that NAPO’s presence on the ticket was intended to boost Ashanti votes, but he rubbished that assertion, clarifying that tribe was not a factor in his selection.

He remarked that competence was the basis of his selection, not ethnicity or his lineage in the Ashanti dynasty.

NAPO concluded by calling for unity within the party and an end to the blame game.

The ceremony, held at Accra’s Black Star Square, was a grand display of Ghana’s democratic strength, featuring speeches, music, and cultural performances.

However, one particular moment gained significant attention: Dr. Bawumia’s respectful bow to Mahama.

The image, shared on Facebook, quickly went viral, sparking various emotions among Ghanaians.

Some praised the former Vice President for demonstrating humility, maturity, and statesmanship.

They highlighted how his gesture showcased respect for political opponents and promoted unity in a politically divided country.

The bow was seen as a reflection of Ghana’s political values, emphasizing mutual respect and democratic principles.

But in an interview on Adom FM’s, morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Franklin Cudjoe shared his perspective on the moment.

He explained that the bow was a true reflection of Dr. Bawumia’s character, rather than a carefully orchestrated act for the cameras.

“That’s Bawumia for you—he’s not arrogant, and he’s always respectful. His gesture was simply to show respect for Mahama. It’s not about putting on a show or pretending” he said.

He continued, “People should not read too much into it. This is just his nature—he values competition but respects others. He even conceded defeat earlier, which was also a gesture of grace.”

Mr. Cudjoe concluded by stating, “Bawumia has a bright future ahead of him, and I believe his actions reflect his genuine values.”

Mr. Cudjoe, further urged Ghanaians not to overanalyze the gesture but to appreciate it as a sincere reflection of Dr. Bawumia’s humility and respect for the nation’s democratic ethos.

The tweet, brief yet heartfelt, marked the end of his eight-year service as Vice President.

He wrote: “Thank you, all Ghanaians, for all the support you gave me as Vice President of the Republic from 2017-2025. God bless our homeland Ghana.”

Dr. Bawumia’s tenure as Vice President under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration was characterised by a strong focus on digitisation, economic reforms, and infrastructure development.

As a technocrat-turned-politician, he played a pivotal role in advancing policies aimed at transforming Ghana’s economy, particularly in the realms of technology and financial inclusion.

His leadership saw the implementation of groundbreaking initiatives such as the digital property address system, mobile money interoperability, and the National ID Card project, which have significantly modernised Ghana’s public services.

The former Vice President’s message was widely interpreted as a gracious acknowledgement of the end of his term and a gesture of goodwill toward the incoming administration.

By thanking Ghanaians for their support, he emphasised the collective nature of leadership and governance.

Dr Bawumia’s concluding words, “God bless our homeland Ghana,” underscored his enduring commitment to the country, regardless of political transitions.

Bawumia’s prompt concession reflects dedication to national peace – Security analyst https://www.adomonline.com/bawumias-prompt-concession-reflects-dedication-to-national-peace-security-analyst/ Sat, 28 Dec 2024 10:08:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488248 Security analyst Dr. Asante Otchere has stated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s decision to concede defeat to John Mahama ahead of the official electoral declaration would not have impacted the outcome of the 2024 presidential election.

Speaking on TV3, Dr. Otchere emphasized that both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had their own internal data and projections.

“The same way the NPP had their data and numbers, the NDC also had theirs. Even if Dr. Bawumia had not conceded early, it wouldn’t have changed the fact that he lost to the president-elect, John Mahama,” Dr. Otchere remarked.

He acknowledged the emotional strain that often accompanies electoral defeats.

“It’s not easy to approach an election with confidence and bravado, only to face such a resounding loss. Conceding is often more about personal pride than the data. Delaying would not have changed the outcome, especially since the NDC, I’m reliably informed, completed their collation almost instantly,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia, addressing his supporters on December 26, explained his decision to concede promptly. Speaking from his residence, the NPP flagbearer affirmed that his choice was rooted in a commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s democratic values and ensuring national peace.

“The stability of Ghana must always come first,” he declared, underscoring his dedication to the country’s welfare.

Dr. Bawumia also extended heartfelt gratitude to his supporters for their relentless efforts during the campaign, expressing his appreciation for their loyalty and unwavering dedication.

Bawumia would’ve conceded defeat on election night if… – Omane Boamah https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-wouldve-conceded-defeat-on-election-night-if-omane-boamah/ Fri, 27 Dec 2024 10:01:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488048 The Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has lauded his party’s advanced collation system, asserting its superiority over that of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to Dr. Omane Boamah, the concession speech delivered by NPP flagbearer Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, following his party’s defeat in the December 7, 2024, general election, could have come earlier if the NPP had a more efficient collation system like the NDC’s.

“With over 37,000 presidential results from polling stations collated by our National Elections and IT Directorate well before 10 p.m. on election night, Bawumia was at a paltry 41.21%. Why would he not concede the following day?” Dr. Omane Boamah stated in a Facebook post on Friday, December 27, 2024.

He added, “Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia actually delayed! He could have conceded that night IF AND ONLY IF the NPP collation system was as fast as ours.”

Vice President Bawumia officially conceded defeat to President-elect John Dramani Mahama on Sunday, December 8, 2024, approximately 15 hours after polls closed.

The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, later declared the results, confirming that John Dramani Mahama of the NDC won with 56.55% of the total valid votes, while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured 41.61%.

In addition to the presidential victory, the NDC also achieved a commanding majority in the parliamentary elections.

In a Facebook post, Dr Bawumia described the visit from Priscilla who now walks with a prosthetic leg, as his “best Christmas gift.”

Priscilla according to Dr Bawumia was at the Weija Leprosarium and had the opportunity to undergo medical treatment in Italy for her amputated leg.

“I got my best Christmas gift yesterday when Priscilla returned to Ghana and paid me a visit at home to thank me and show that she can now walk with her new leg. To God be the glory,” he wrote.

Priscilla was reportedly abandoned by her parents at birth due to her condition and has been under the care of Father Andrew Campbell at the Weija Leprosarium.

After numerous failed attempts to treat her severely affected legs, her limb was eventually amputated in Ghana.

As a Patron of Lepers Aid Ghana, Dr Bawumia during one of his routine visits to the leprosarium came across Priscilla.

She has spent five months undergoing the treatment and recovery process.

NDC’s control of major media houses gave them edge in 2024 polls – Bawumia https://www.adomonline.com/ndcs-control-of-major-media-houses-gave-them-edge-in-2024-polls-bawumia/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 08:56:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485475 The 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has suggested that the campaign faced a significant communication disadvantage during the December 7 presidential election, largely due to the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) dominance of key traditional media outlets.

Speaking to NPP communicators on Wednesday, December 18 at his residence for the first time since the December 7 election, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the party’s efforts during the campaign but noted that the media imbalance hindered their electoral strategy.

Dr. Bawumia stated that while the NPP excelled on social media and outpaced the NDC by a significant margin, the party struggled against the NDC’s ownership and influence over key media platforms.

“We dominated the NDC in social media. I mean, by far, by far, very, very clearly,” he said. “But we were working against their ownership of support from key media houses. Isn’t it, you know? That put us at a disadvantage in many ways in terms of the communication field because we had a lot of these key media houses who were not on our side.”

Despite this challenge, Dr. Bawumia praised the NPP communicators for their dedication and resilience throughout the campaign.

“You fought very hard at the time you had the opportunity,” he remarked. “I must tell you that I’m very proud of you. Very, very, very, very proud.”

Reflecting on the overall campaign, Dr. Bawumia also acknowledged the impact of the unexpected low voter turnout on the final results.

“I am confident that anytime Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia decides to run, the party will support him wholeheartedly,” Aboagye stated. “The NPP recognizes his unmatched creativity, leadership skills, and innovative approach as critical for Ghana’s progress.”

When asked whether Bawumia is the best person to lead the NPP to victory, Aboagye confidently replied, “Without a doubt.”

Addressing concerns about Bawumia’s ability to recover from the 2024 defeat, he pointed to his resilience, referencing his previous experiences: “He lost as a running mate in 2008 and 2012, but he came back stronger in 2016. He has gone through this before.”

The Electoral Commission (EC) confirmed that John Dramani Mahama won the December 9 polls, securing 6,328,397 votes (56.55%) against Dr. Bawumia’s 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).

“We are really praying and hoping that he comes to lead us in rebuilding, reorganizing, reflecting, and working towards recapturing power. The party is working to rebuild,” he said.

Aboagye further emphasized that Dr Bawumia’s contributions to the party and his key roles in governance make him the only person capable of strengthening the NPP once again.

“Everybody believes that he has applied himself very well. The party, and most of us, are waiting for him to make a firm decision. The party and even the people of this country acknowledge his hard work and dedication” he added.

The NDC has already crossed 180 seats with some seats still outstanding due to disagreements. Also, the new parliament will have four independent MPs.

Mahama wins elections; Bawumia wins admiration after early concession https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-wins-elections-bawumia-wins-admiration-after-early-concession/ Wed, 11 Dec 2024 18:18:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2482596 Ghana’s December 7, 2024 elections have concluded with dramatic twists, cementing the West African nation’s reputation as a beacon of democratic maturity.

In a highly anticipated showdown between former President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the former emerged victorious, securing a win that has resonated across the political landscape.

However, it was Dr. Bawumia’s early and gracious concession that won him widespread admiration, capturing the hearts of Ghanaians and the global political community alike.

After a highly contested race, former President John Mahama, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), clinched the presidency with a decisive majority.

Mr. Mahama’s win marks a significant return to power after he lost to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the 2020 elections.

This victory underscores the enduring appeal of his political vision and leadership style, as well as the desire for change among a sizable portion of the electorate.

In his victory speech, Mr. Mahama emphasized the need for unity and healing within the country, calling for all Ghanaians to come together to tackle the pressing economic and social challenges.

“This is not just a victory for me, but for all Ghanaians who yearn for a new direction,” Mr. Mahama said, his tone one of reconciliation.

His call for national unity is seen as an attempt to bridge the divide that often characterizes the political discourse in Ghana.

Mr. Mahama’s campaign focused on addressing the economic challenges facing Ghana, with promises of job creation, economic diversification, and strengthening of healthcare and education systems.

His ability to connect with voters, especially the youth and the working-class, played a key role in his success, as did his unwavering commitment to peace and stability in the country.

While Mahama’s win marks the culmination of his political journey, Bawumia’s actions following the results have left a lasting impression.

Dr. Bawumia, the candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), is widely respected for his intellect, charisma, and forward-thinking policies.

Throughout the election, Bawumia’s campaign showcased his expertise in economic management and technology-driven development, positioning him as a modernizer for Ghana.

However, despite his commendable efforts, Bawumia did not secure the presidency. In a move that garnered widespread praise, he offered an early concession, acknowledging Mahama’s victory with grace and humility.

His decision to concede early in the process was seen as a testament to his integrity, a rare demonstration of sportsmanship/statemanship that contrasted sharply with the often-contentious political climate across the globe.

“I congratulate President Mahama on his victory and wish him success in leading our nation forward,” Bawumia stated.

“Ghana’s democracy has spoken, and it is now our responsibility to support the new leadership for the betterment of our country.”

This gesture of respect and acceptance was lauded by observers both locally and internationally, further solidifying Dr. Bawumia’s reputation as a statesman dedicated to Ghana’s democratic principles.

The peaceful and orderly conduct of the election, coupled with the dignified behaviour exhibited by both candidates, speaks volumes about Ghana’s political maturity.

Amidst global concerns about democratic backsliding, Ghana continues to serve as a model for peaceful transitions of power in Africa.

Dr. Bawumia’s early concession and Mr. Mahama’s win represent more than just a political shift; they reflect the evolving nature of Ghana’s democracy.

This election season, although marred by economic challenges, has provided a platform for political dialogue and civic engagement.

Both Mahama’s victory and Bawumia’s concession are seen as pivotal moments that reinforce the strength and resilience of Ghanaian democracy.

As Mahama begins his second term, the country faces significant challenges, including an economy grappling with inflation, unemployment, and public debt.

However, Ghanaians remain hopeful, believing that their new leadership will rise to the occasion and steer the country toward prosperity.

Meanwhile, Bawumia’s continued presence in the political sphere promises a strong opposition that will keep the government accountable.

Already, transition is ongoing which is centered on rebuilding the economy and addressing the urgent needs of the Ghanaian people.

Meanwhile, Dr. Bawumia’s position within the NPP and his future role in the country’s political landscape will continue to spark speculation.

Despite the loss, Dr. Bawumia’s actions have undoubtedly earned him respect and admiration, making him a key player in Ghana’s political future.

Ultimately, the 2024 elections have proven that, in Ghana, politics can be both competitive and civil, with the country’s democracy emerging stronger than ever.

Bawumia demonstrated maturity and statesmanship in conceding defeat – GJA https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-demonstrated-maturity-and-statesmanship-in-conceding-defeat-gja/ Tue, 10 Dec 2024 19:32:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2482141 The Media Coalition Ghana has commended the Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for his exemplary display of “maturity and statesmanship” in conceding defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on behalf of the group on Tuesday, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour applauded Dr Bawumia for taking the gracious step of calling President-elect, John Mahama to congratulate him, even before the Electoral Commission officially declared the results.

This act, Mr Dwumfour noted, demonstrates true leadership and commitment to the peace and unity of Ghana.

“This is indeed commendable,” he stated, adding that Dr Bawumia’s actions serve as a powerful example of how politicians should conduct themselves in the face of electoral outcomes.

The group also congratulated President-elect, John Mahama on his victory, urging him and his supporters to be measured and magnanimous in their celebrations to avoid exacerbating tensions.

At the same time, Mr Dwumfour called on those disappointed with the election results to exhibit restraint and avoid confrontations, drawing inspiration from D. Bawumia’s calm and conciliatory approach.

Expressing concern over reports of vandalism and destruction of state property in parts of the country, the Media Coalition Ghana strongly condemned these actions, stating that such behaviour undermines national stability and wastes taxpayers’ resources.

The Association called on the leadership of both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to actively encourage their supporters to act responsibly during this critical period, stressing the importance of preserving peace and unity in the nation.

“We condemn this act of vandalism and call on the perpetrators to stop it immediately. We can’t waste taxpayers money. It is our money. If you destroy it, they will use the same money, to bring it back to its normal existence,” Mr Dwumfour stated.

The group urged Ghanaians to draw lessons from Dr Bawumia’s example of maintaining peace and work together to uphold the nation’s democratic values.

2024 polls: NDC did not win, we gave them the win – Bawumia https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-ndc-did-not-win-we-gave-them-the-win-bawumia/ Tue, 10 Dec 2024 13:55:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2481955 The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate in the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged party members to remain united despite their defeat in the polls.

Speaking during a visit by party members from the Korle Klottey constituency on Tuesday, December 10, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for introspection and collective action to rebuild the party.

“I see many people in pain, but I have an abiding belief in God,” he said.

“His ways are not our ways, and sometimes what appears as a setback is for our own good. This is not the time for blame games; that will only destroy us. Let us come together because this defeat is self-inflicted. We need unity to work toward victory in 2028.”

Dr. Bawumia observed that an analysis of the 2020 and 2024 election results showed the NPP effectively handed power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) through voter apathy.

“The NDC didn’t win because their figures from 2020 didn’t change in 2024. Our votes dropped by 40%. The analysis is simple. We must be united because divided we fall,” he explained.

Dr. Bawumia stressed the importance of setting aside personal ambitions to focus on rebuilding the party.

“This is not about individual ambition; it’s about strengthening the NPP for the future. We may have lost the battle, but we have not lost the war. United, by the grace of God, we will win in 2028,” he said.

Speaking during an interview, Madam Patricia Christabel Kyerematen, addressed the question of why Alan Kyerematen declined the opportunity to serve as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate.

She could not seem to accept the requirement that her husband would work as a subordinate to Bawumia.

“The knowledge that my husband, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has—does Vice President Dr. Bawumia even have a quarter of it?,” she charged.

Madam Patricia lauded her husband as a man of the highest integrity, describing him as unique, laid-back, calculated, and spiritually attuned.

She added that he is wise and has a thoughtful approach to leadership, knowing when to speak and when to remain silent.

“After 40 years of marriage, I can confidently say my husband is wise beyond measure and deeply grounded spiritually. There’s a time for everything under this sun, and he understands this principle better than anyone,” she added.

On the real reason Alan Kyerematen left the NPP to form his own party, Madam Patricia declined to comment.

Her assertion come at a time when political allegiances are being questioned ahead of Ghana’s next general elections.

The Vice President, who was the first to test the system, had to wait for minutes before the gate finally unlocked, allowing him to proceed.

Reacting to the incident, Ningo-Prampram MP Sam George took to Twitter to mock Dr. Bawumia, questioning the readiness of the system before its launch.

He tweeted that the failure of the system proves that rushing to prove a point leads to a bad crash.

He enquired if the airport did not carry out User Acceptance Testing on the system before allowing the Vice President to commission.

The comment has sparked lively debate on social media, with users weighing in on the efficiency of the E-gate system and the readiness of its deployment.

Supporters of the Vice President, however, downplayed the issue, emphasizing that minor glitches are common in the early stages of implementing new technology.

The Ghana Card-enabled E-gate system is part of a broader effort to digitize public services and position Ghana as a leader in digital transformation in Africa.

While the mishap during the launch has drawn mixed reactions, proponents believe the initiative will deliver substantial benefits once fully optimized.
