NPP bigwig defends Akufo-Addo over Bawumia’s running mate selection [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/npp-bigwig-defends-akufo-addo-over-bawumias-running-mate-selection-listen/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 21:01:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2417372 A New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Kwabena Sarpong has dismissed assertions that President Akufo-Addo had a hand in the selection of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as running mate.

Dr Bawumia on Tuesday, June 25 consulted the President on his choice of a running mate for the December 7 presidential election.

During a meeting at the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo is said to have offered some advice and shared his thoughts but eventually accepted Dr Bawumia’s choice.

Rumours suggested that in,ternal disagreements on the choice of the candidate have accounted for the undue delay.

But according to Mr Sarpong, the selection was the sole decision of the flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia although there were consultations.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, programme Wednesday, he was optimistic that even if President Akufo-Addo had the chance to choose the running mate, he may not have settled for the Energy Minister and Manhyia South MP.

“We are blaming Akufo-Addo that he prevented the Vice President from making his choice and wanted to force a candidate on him. But the truth is he had no say,” he stated.

Bawumia selected NAPO based on experience – Nana B https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-selected-napo-based-on-experience-nana-b/ Tue, 02 Jul 2024 09:16:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2416337 The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye is convinced its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia made a great choice in selecting Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, as his running mate.

According to him, Dr Bawumia selected the Manhyia South MP based on his rich experience in the political space.

In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Tuesday, Nana B said the surveys which tipped NAPO as the preferred candidate proved he has overwhelming support.

“His Excellency the Vice President is making this decision with a huge wealth of experience. Why do I say so? In 2008 he was the running mate, in 2012 he was the running mate, in 2016 he was the running mate and we won, in 2020 elections he was again. His Excellency the president nominated him again to be his running mate. So he’s been eight years or more running mate and eight years vice president,” he explained.

He appealed to the party’s rank and file to give the Vice President the maximum respect for his choice since he did not just wake up from sleep to make the nomination.

Accra-based Citi News reported the meeting took place at Dr Bawumia’s residence.

This follows reports that, the Vice President has submitted the name of Energy Minister and Manhyia South MP, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh to President Akufo-Addo as his preferred candidate.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin who is the Effutu MP has therefore been charged to inform the Majority Caucus.

Dr Bawumia will formally present the candidate for their consideration and approval, in line with the party’s constitution.

News about Dr Prempeh’s selection has been met with mixed reactions from the rank and file of the party.

Asante Akim North MP, Andy Appiah-Kubi for instance has said the candidate is not acceptable to the entirety of the NPP base, particularly MPs.

Addressing the issue, Mr Afenyo-Markin emphasised the importance of respecting party rules and maintaining decorum in intra-party discourse.

“We should all respect party rules. You cannot go out of your way to describe your colleague in an unacceptable manner. We are in this together. There is no perfect person in this world. Let us be measured in the language we use,” he said.

Mr Afrenyo-Markin’s caution comes after controversial statements by Mr Appiah Kubi, which have stirred internal party tensions.

According to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akim North, the Energy Minister, Dr Opoku Prempeh is not acceptable to the entirety of the NPP base, particularly MPs.

He added that the Energy Minister cannot campaign effectively in many constituencies.

“I would want somebody who would be open with the people on the ground, who would be able to deliver the votes, who would submit to the presidency, and who would be important in bringing Parliament closer to the executive,” he said.

Nonetheless, Mr Afenyo-Markin underscored the need for unity and mutual respect within the party ranks, highlighting that disparaging remarks about fellow party members are counterproductive.

He further reiterated his confidence in the party’s leadership and decision-making processes, particularly in the context of selecting a running mate.

“The flagbearer, Dr Bawumia, has the confidence of the party and I believe he will use the structures of the party in making his decisions,” he affirmed.

How can you be President if? – Former NPP MP asks Bawumia https://www.adomonline.com/how-can-you-be-president-if-former-npp-mp-asks-bawumia/ Fri, 21 Jun 2024 20:03:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2411805 A former Obuasi East Member of Parliament, Edward Ennin, has raised concerns over the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia‘s delay in announcing his running mate for the 2024 election.

The delay according to him undermines Dr Bawumia’s readiness and suitability for the presidency.

“How can he be President if a small decision like this he can’t make because people are influencing him? Then he can’t do the job. How can he be President?” he said on Accra-based Onua FM.

Per the NPP’s constitution, a running mate is to be selected 12 months before a major election if the President is not the candidate.

Following Dr Bawumia’s election as flagbearer on November 4, 2023, he was expected to name his running mate on December 6, 2023.

However, with six months to the election, Dr Bawumia is yet to name his running mate, causing agitation among the rank and file.

But Mr Ennin has said rumours suggest internal disagreements on the choice of the candidate has accounted for the undue delay.

“What amazes me is that former President Kufour clearly and openly chose his running mate, and so did Akufo-Addo. Now it is Dr. Bawumia’s time to decide who he wants, and the information that keeps reaching us is that people in the Jubilee House do not like the candidate Dr. Bawumia prefers.

“If you are a flagbearer of a major party like the NPP and you’re being frightened to choose the running mate you like, then how can he be president? He doesn’t have the boldness to be president. Is he not a man? The constitution has given him the right to choose, is he not man enough to?” he bemoaned.

Meanwhile, a survey by the National Investigative Bureau (NIB) has revealed that Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh is widely preferred among NPP members to be the running mate.

Napo has the needed experience to be Bawumia’s running mate – Prof Sikanku https://www.adomonline.com/napo-has-the-needed-experience-to-be-bawumias-running-mate-prof-sikanku/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 10:41:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2410989 Political Communication Analyst, Prof Etse Sikanku has emphasised Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh stands tall among potential running mates to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem, Prof Sikanku noted the Manhyia South Member of Parliament(MP) has the needed political and executive experience required for the role.

His comments come after a National Investigative Bureau(NIB) survey revealed that Napo as he is popularly known is widely preferred among NPP members to be Vice Presidential candidates.

The survey engaged 5,116 NPP delegates nationwide, including national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives.

According to the study, Dr Opoku Prempeh secured 76.2% of the responses from executives polled.

Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who came second garnered 10.16%.

Reacting to this, Prof Sikanku said the results of the survey show Napo’s grounding at the base and his popularity.

“Napo has had the executive and political experience. He is popular among the rank and file of the NPP and there is a certain level of likeness and connection he has with the base.

“He has been in the team for a long time and has done a lot of work. He is quite popular and that can break the sentiment of the grassroot,” he stated.

He further noted that, there are key ingredients that must drive the selection, adding the running mate must bring substantial votes to the table and effectively complement Bawumia’s governance efforts once in power.

“It is a critical decision and depending on how the race is going, whoever will be selected will play a crucial role.  The person must cross the presidential bar to be seen as a presidential material; thus if the president is not around he should be able to step in a twinkle of an eye.

“He must be competent, have the temperament to hold that high position; the presidential power and must be able to complement the president because if they are not friends or cannot work together, at the end of the day, there will be trouble. The running mate must also be dependable, bold, demonstrate loyalty, support and sacrifices and Napo has exhibited this over time. He has been around and done a lot of work over the years,” he added.

Bawumia’s running mate must be ‘politically correct’ – Miracles Aboagye https://www.adomonline.com/bawumias-running-mate-must-be-politically-correct-miracles-aboagye/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 08:39:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2410975 Director of Communications and spokesperson for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, Denis Miracle Aboagye, has emphasised the necessity of selecting a “politically correct” running mate for the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer.

Speaking on PM Express on JoyNews, he noted that the running mate of Dr Bawumia must bring substantial votes to the table and effectively complement Bawumia’s governance efforts once in power.

“These are the two key or critical ingredients and these two things are what is driving him (Bawumia). Like I said, this person must be politically correct.

“This simply means that we are going out there to go and look for votes, we need to win before we govern. So this person must be one that will bring in the votes to support all the votes that Dr Bawumia himself will be bringing.”

“Eventually, when we win the elections based on the votes that we have collectively brought into the polls, we need to govern.

“In governance, Dr. Bawumia has articulated several policies and action points for various sectors and he would need a person who would complement his efforts and give him the right support to be able to implement and execute this vision,” Mr Aboagye said.

Taking into consideration these key factors, the Bawumia campaign spokesperson said that the NPP flagbearer was certain of who to select as running mate before he decided to run as flagbearer.

Mr Aboagye stated that he is only following the NPP’s rules which has been that the running mate should be nominated in consultation with the National Council who would ratify approval otherwise.

“But he (Dr Bawumia), as a person, has been clear in his mind who he is nominating, long before he was elected on November 4th during the presidential primaries. What is left now is for the time to be due,” Mr Aboagye said.

His comments come after a National Investigative Bureau survey revealed that Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh is widely preferred among party members to be the running mate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia.

The survey engaged 5,116 NPP delegates nationwide, including national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives.

According to the study, Dr Opoku Prempeh secured 76.2% of the responses from executives polled.

Following him was the Minister of Education and MP for the Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who garnered 10.16%.

Other notable personalities the delegates consider for the role include Apostle Opoku Onyinah, former Chairman of the Pentecost Church-Ghana, and Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture and MP for Abetifi Constituency.

As Dr Bawumia faces the challenge of choosing among some bigwigs of the party, the survey reveals that there was a strong consensus that the running mate should be selected from the Ashanti Region.

Bawumia’s running mate: Leakage of NIB survey worrying – Seidu Alidu https://www.adomonline.com/bawumias-running-mate-leakage-of-nib-survey-worrying-seidu-alidu/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 07:20:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2410917 Professor Seidu Alidu, Head of the Political Science Department, at the University of Ghana, has expressed concern about the leak of a National Investigation Bureau (NIB) survey regarding Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party flagbearer’s preferred running mate.

He said although the NIB was mandated to investigate issues of national security importance, its findings should have been kept confidential and disclosed only after the party had made their official announcement on their selected candidate.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Prof. Alidu said the circulation of the survey in the media, could create a “bandwagon effect” and influence the Party’s decision in favour of one candidate.

“The survey is relevant. The NIB is supposed to be proactive in advising the Government on national security matters and potential security threats. The selection of a running mate who will potentially be the vice president of the Republic should be of national security concern.

“Making it public is concerning. I am not sure it was meant to sway opinions towards a particular candidate or not,” he said.

The NIB survey indicated that Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the energy minister, is widely preferred among party members to be the running mate to Dr Bawumia.

Dr Bawumia is yet to announce his running mate for the 2024 General Election scheduled for December 7, 2024 – a development some political analysts have described as “long overdue.”

The NIB Report, which sampled the views of 5,116 NPP delegates nationwide, including national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives, said 76.2 per cent of respondents preferred Dr Prempeh as Dr Bawumia’s running mate.

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, garnered 10.16 of the responses.

Other candidates that made the list included Apostle Opoku Onyinah, former Chairman of the Pentecost Church-Ghana, and Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture and MP for Abetifi Constituency.

Prof. Alidu said six months would be too short a time to market the preferred running mate for the NPP.

He said the Party would have to develop a strategy to convince voters to accept the character and personality of the candidate ahead of the December 7 polls.

“Can you change a person’s character and the way that people perceive him in six months?” he asked, adding that “It takes time for people to repose confidence in the candidate.”

Bawumia’s choice of running mate more important than… – Prof Gyampo https://www.adomonline.com/bawumias-choice-of-running-mate-more-important-than-prof-gyampo/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 07:18:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2410930 A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, has stated that despite the overwhelming support of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members for Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as running mate, their choice does not entirely matter.

According to him, party faithful will vote for the party in the general elections regardless of who is chosen as a running mate for flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

As such, it is important to have Dr Bawumia choose someone he is comfortable with, who will complement him, and who will help draw in many votes, especially from floating voters, Prof. Gyampo said on PM Express on JoyNews.

“Partisan de-alignment in developing democracies is often minimal. As in, if somebody is an NPP supporter, it is oftentimes difficult for them to de-ally, in a way they can say that, well, I’m not going to vote. But they would not move easily from NPP to NDC, and vice versa.”

“And so NPP supporters are going to be supporters of the party in any way, regardless of whoever is fielded as their ally mate. And so whether it is going to be Napo (Dr Opoku Prempeh) or whoever, for me, it depends on who the flag-bearer of the party wants, and who the flag-bearer will be comfortable working with. To my mind, what is important is not really what the party wants,” the Political Science Lecturer said.

Prof. Gyampo further highlighted some additional qualities the running mate must possess aside from complementing Dr Bawumia.

“What is important is he who would be able to go beyond the party support base to reach out to election candidates. NPP support base would always be there, even though their support base has been scattered, especially in the Ashanti region, a little by the Alan factor. But if you take that away, the support base of the NPP will be there but they are not enough.”

“Their support base will not be enough to make them win any election. And so you are looking for a candidate who will be able to help Dr Bawumia to go into the other political divide and also to appeal to floating voters, win them to the side of Dr Bawumia,” Prof Gyampo said.

Additionally, he emphasised that it is important for the NPP flagbearer to choose a running mate who appeals to the Christian majority in Ghana.

“Whether we like it or not, Ghana is made up of over 70% Christians. The other religions can share the rest of the 30%. And he who will be able to help Dr Bawumia enough is he who the Christian folks will feel comfortable with. He will be able to attract the Christian support base to balance the religion of Dr Bawumia, to make the Christians also feel a bit comfortable.”

“Last but not the least, is he that Ghanaians are comfortable that, look, should Dr Bawumia not be there, he would be enough. He would have the adequate persona, the temperament, the sobriety, the statesmanship to be able to serve as the acting president in the absence,” Prof Gyampo noted.

This follows a National Investigative Bureau (NIB) survey revealing that Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh is widely preferred among party members to be the running mate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia.

The survey engaged 5,116 NPP delegates nationwide, including national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives.

In a statement, Ambassador Osei clarified that, he has not received any communication or contact regarding the possibility of being shortlisted as a Vice Presidential candidate.

Despite speculations circulating in the media, he affirmed that no official approach has been made to him in this regard.

Dispelling rumours of his ill health allegedly cited as the reason for rejecting the supposed offer, the NPP guru emphasized that he is in good health and actively fulfilling his duties as the Board Chair of GPHA without any hindrances.

“I am fit and sound in both body and mind,” the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Subin and Managing Director of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) said.

The report alleging his rejection of the potential nomination for Vice President was attributed to one of the candidates vying for the position, who purportedly cited both health concerns and age as reasons for declining the offer.

As anticipation builds for the announcement of the running mate by Dr Bawumia, reports suggest that the decision will be revealed imminently.

The selection process will culminate in submitting the chosen nominee’s name to the National Council of the party for further deliberation.

While the suspense surrounding the identity of the selected candidate remains intact, clarity has been brought to the forefront regarding Ambassador Osei’s position on the speculated offer.

The poll, which ran during the show’s broadcast on Thursday, May 30, 2024, showcased a clear preference among voters for Dr. Adutwum over his main competitor, the Energy Minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh.

Poll Results

The poll results, which amassed 15.6k views by the close of Friday, May 31, showed Dr. Adutwum securing 64.4% of the votes, while Dr. Opoku Prempeh garnered 35.6%.

The significant lead highlights Dr. Adutwum’s popularity and acceptability among voters as the ideal running mate for Dr. Bawumia.

The poll, discussed extensively on the Super Morning Show, reflected the sentiments of callers.

Strategic Importance

Choosing a running mate from the Ashanti Region, a stronghold for the NPP, is considered a strategic move. Both Dr. Adutwum and Dr. Opoku Prempeh hail from this region, which underscores their suitability for the Vice Presidential slot.

The Ashanti Region’s robust voter base is crucial for the NPP’s electoral success, and aligning with a candidate from this area could enhance their chances of maintaining support and securing votes.

Party Dynamics and Leadership Decision

Despite the poll results, the final decision rests with Dr. Bawumia and the NPP leadership.

The party aims to make history by winning a third consecutive presidential election, a feat that has not been achieved in Ghana’s fourth republic, which spans over 30 years.

The leadership is likely to consider various factors, including regional representation, political experience, and public appeal, before making their choice.

The Candidates

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum: Known for his transformative work in the education sector, Dr. Adutwum has been a prominent figure in promoting educational reforms and improving access to quality education in Ghana. His leadership has been marked by initiatives aimed at enhancing the country’s educational infrastructure and curriculum.

Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh: As the Energy Minister, Dr. Opoku Prempeh has played a vital role in addressing Ghana’s energy challenges. His tenure has seen efforts to stabilize and expand the energy sector.

According to him, the chief chose the wrong platform to make such a sensitive appeal.

Prof. Marfo suggested that, Dormaahene could have made his request to the Vice President privately.

“The truth is, not everything that we say is meant for the public domain. Therefore, the Dormaahene had the opportunity, after meeting the Vice President, to privately call and present his request” he stated.

He said Dormaahene’s public appeal “smacks of ethnic politics” and cautioned against the potential consequences of making such statements publicly.

Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II charged Dr. Bawumia to select a running mate from the region.

He listed several individuals from the region, including Martin Adjei Korsah, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, and Kwaku Agyemang Manu, highlighting their suitability for the position of running mate.

But Prof. Marfo said what he did clearly smacks of ethnic politics.

“Please, there are lots of people in the other regions, so if your focus goes on just one particular region, only they will vote for you and the rest of us will vote against you” he said in an interview on Oyerepa FM.

Bryan Acheampong addresses Bawumia’s running mate speculation https://www.adomonline.com/bryan-acheampong-addresses-bawumias-running-mate-speculation/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 08:44:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2387917 Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has responded to speculation of being considered as running mate to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The Abetifi Member of Parliament (MP) has said he is not a contender among the potential running mates.

According to him, whoever will be selected is only in the mind of Dr Bawumia, who he is confident will choose the most suitable candidate.

“The only leading candidate that we know is in the mind of Dr. Bawumia. I am serving now but I was doing very well in business, if you know me. But I am serving now, so I am not a leading candidate for Dr. Bawumia.

“Everything is in his head. He will choose, he will make the best decision for the party, and the party will rally behind that candidate,” he told journalists.

Following Dr Bawumia’s election as flagbearer on November 4, 2023, he was expected to name his running mate on December 6, 2023.

However, at a crunch meeting with the National Executive Council (NEC), he requested an extension of time for further consultations on the choice of running mate.

But political watchers have expressed concerns the delayed announcement could pose challenges for the NPP.

Meanwhile, Dr Bawumia is currently on a nationwide tour in the build-up to the 2024 election, with the Eastern region his first destination.

He disclosed that, Dr. Bawumia has a clear preference for his running mate.

Despite concerns about potential delays and their consequences, there have been calls for the NPP to promptly reveal its choice for the running mate position.

However, during an interview, Mr. Aboagye affirmed that, the party is adhering to its internal timeline and could announce the running mate at any moment.

“We are very much within the timeline. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was elected barely six months ago, and so we still have time. If you recall, his nomination in 2008 was done somewhere in August.

So, for us in the NPP, we are very much within our timelines. It can be tomorrow, it can be next week it can be next month, it can be three days from now. The flagbearer at this point is very clear in his mind who his running mate is going to be and when he is ready, he is going to announce that,” he stated on Citi FM.

Allow Bawumia to freely choose a running mate – NPP Group https://www.adomonline.com/allow-bawumia-to-freely-choose-a-running-mate-npp-group/ Mon, 22 Apr 2024 14:47:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2384159 A group within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), known as the Patriotic Movement for Bawumia, has advocated for the autonomy of Dr. Mahammudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, in selecting his running mate for the upcoming presidential election.

This group, comprising NPP executives, grassroots members, and non-party individuals staunchly supporting Dr. Bawumia, has stressed the importance of respecting his freedom to choose a running mate without undue influence.

They have raised concerns about various factions within the party attempting to pressure Dr. Bawumia into selecting their preferred candidates through tactics such as press conferences, persistent delegations, petitions, and aggressive statements in the media.

The Patriotic Movement for Bawumia has criticized these actions, suggesting that they undermine Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and autonomy.

They argue that, such pressure tactics reflect a lack of confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s ability to independently decide on his running mate and could ultimately harm the party’s electoral prospects.

Encouraging Dr. Bawumia to uphold his reputation as a decisive leader with a clear vision, the group advises him to select a running mate based on merit and suitability for the role.

They caution against succumbing to the pressures of specific party factions, citing past instances in Ghanaian political history where such concessions led to electoral setbacks for political parties.

In essence, the Patriotic Movement for Bawumia urges Dr. Bawumia to assert his autonomy and leadership by choosing a running mate whom he believes will best complement his candidacy in the 2024 presidential race.

”We are humbly advising our flag-bearer, His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia not to allow any individual or groups, to compel him or lure him into choosing a running mate against his actual or real choice. Allowing yourself to be manipulated in this manner has dire consequences on the party’s victory in this year’s presidential election”.

According to the group, the party risks suffering from serious disunity and long-standing cracks in her rank and file should the flag-bearer, for any reason, permit the pressure being mounted on him by the people in the party as well as their hired political analysts and campaigners, to coerce him to select a running mate from their camps, just to satisfy their selfish interests at the expense of the NPP’s victory in the 2024 presidential election.

The group during a news conference in Kumasi added that “It is sad to note that the NPP members who must have been vigorously campaigning for our flag-bearer, are at this crucial moment, busily exerting all their energies on adopting various diabolic strategies to force a running mate on Dr. Bawumia. This is absurd and must be condemned by all persons who mean well for the party.”

The statement further posed the question, ”Now, the problem we have at hand is, if our flag-bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia chooses any of the people being forced on him by groups and individuals, through press conferences with threats, deliberate media interviews, campaigning flyers, delegations to him, etc, how would the other factions and neutral members of the party feel, react and respond to the announcement of such a choice?”

The group which has a membership including top NPP constituency, and regional and national executives, has also cautioned people who have interests in becoming the running mate to Dr. Bawumia, to refrain from sponsoring groups and individuals or employing tactics that are alien to the NPP’s modus operandi, just to forcefully cause the flag-bearer to consider any of them as the running mate for this year’s election.

”Some of the people whose names have popped up as being interested in being Dr. Bawumia’s running mate have been accused of sponsoring people to hold press conferences and sign petitions to forcefully cause our flag-bearer, Dr. Bawumia make them his running mate. This childish modus, and odd way of operating in the NPP, if true, must be condemned in no uncertain terms. Selecting a running mate is the prerogative of the flag-bearer, and under no circumstance must he or she be made to choose a running mate under duress. Furthermore, this weak means of getting a person to become a running mate, has never been the NPP’s style; it is too disgracing and must cease forthwith”, the group cautioned.

They further advised that characters who are hell-bent on forcing a candidate on Dr Bawumia should not make the situation in his time appear different from those of his predecessors.

They further posited that NPP flag-bearers have always had the liberty and power to choose their preferred running mates and that the status quo must not be changed during Dr Bawumia’s era since he is the leader of the party, he must be allowed to lead.

In a scathing criticism, the group, respectfully, declared that they were not pleased with the recent ‘sponsored declaration’ for a particular person who is known to have declared serious interest in being the running mate to Dr. Bawumia.

The group has therefore appealed to the NPP’s flagbearer to disregard any such endorsements that might have come now, in the past, or in the future.

“Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ‘is his own man’, let us allow him to select someone he has tested and finds capable of helping him lead the NPP to break the eight and consequently directing the next NPP government to continue to bring the needed development for our beloved country, Ghana”, the group added.

It’s nobody’s right to be Bawumia’s running mate – John Boadu https://www.adomonline.com/its-nobodys-right-to-be-bawumias-running-mate-john-boadu/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 19:27:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2381374 A former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for calm among individuals vying to be selected as the running mate of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December elections.

John Boadu stated that the selection of a running mate is not a right but rather a privilege, and it ultimately lies with Dr Bawumia, although the decision is also subject to approval by the National Council of the party.

In an interview with JoyNews on Sunday, April 14, Mr. Boadu urged interested persons to participate in future flagbearer elections when nominations are open.

He stressed that the decision on the running mate will be made in the best interest of the party and not based on individual preferences.

Mr Boadu emphasised that no one will be imposed on the party, and the selection process will ensure that the best candidate is chosen to complement Dr Bawumia’s candidacy.

“It is nobody’s right to become a running mate. If you want to become president, contest when we reopen nominations.

“So this noise about I should have it and he or she should not have it and creating all kinds of challenges, I think that it is something that must be stopped.

“Because even if the flagbearer chooses one person which we have seen over the years, the National Council can decide that no, we won’t go with this person.”

With Dr Mahamudu Bawumia positioned as the flagbearer and various preparatory measures underway, such as the establishment of campaign teams, attention is now directed towards the pivotal task of selecting a running mate.

This decision has sparked intense lobbying within the party, particularly within the Ashanti Region.

Analysts frequently mention several individuals as potential candidates, including Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Joseph Osei Owusu, and esteemed clergyman and former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Prof. Opoku Onyinah.

Furthermore, Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare and Communications Minister Ursula Owusu Ekulful have emerged as notable contenders in the running mate selection process for Dr Bawumia.

However, the Campaign Chairman for the NPP in the 2024 elections, Dan Kwaku Botwe, has affirmed that there is no pressure on the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to announce his running mate.

According to him, Dr Bawumia will unveil his chosen candidate at the appropriate moment, emphasizing that there is no urgency for the selection process.

He reassured that neither Dr Bawumia nor the party faces any challenges in the process of selecting a running mate.

According to him, Dr Bawumia must be allowed to choose his preferred candidate at his own time and pace.

Chairman Boateng-Agyemang made these comments on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Wednesday.

He cautioned that, the running mate position of NPP “is not up for contest” and that the lobbying and advertisement for candidates must therefore cease.

“Pressure on Bawumia to name running mate unnecessary. We should give him time to select a person of his own. It is not a race so we should stop that advertisement of candidates,” he urged.

NPP running mate: Ashanti region now boisterous; Bawumia should look elsewhere https://www.adomonline.com/npp-running-mate-ashanti-region-now-boisterous-bawumia-should-look-elsewhere/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 08:13:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2378145 The scare of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) being an Akan party and the attempt to nationalise it, is at a crossroads, hence picking a running mate from the region at this time will be a mistake rather than a fortune.

The show of power, division, and rejection by some key and traditionally core elephant family is grave.

Ashanti region remains the powerhouse of the NPP, but the litmus test for the first time denying the region of a presidential representative will either show the organic and spontaneous support or otherwise.

Seriously, one of the key benefits of a stable political party is the nationalisation of it and a solid representation of region, language, religion and identifiable groups.

One of the boldest decisions the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken in recent political history after Jerry John Rawlings was to further consolidate its geographical representation by virtually taking Volta influence.

NDC owns Volta Region and Volta region owns NDC but denying the owners and the Florida of a presidential rep has appreciated some members from the other regions.

In fact, as an ardent covert of Rawlings (though I disagreed with his position on a number of issues) I totally, was not in agreement with NDC taking their running mate outside the region.

I believe that there are some fantastic and cooked-ready young men like Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor Emmanuel Kwasi Nedzrah, George Loh and others.

Surprisingly, the NDC has sustained the move of deviating from picking a running from their stronghold region, yet their numbers keep appreciating after the last two elections where the party suffered apathy not because of the running mate but felt was not treated well as “their “ party in power.

For the past 24 years, the NDC has not had a presidential rep from the Volta region but it’s doing well as a party in opposition.

Who ever thought the NDC could be this strong without the Rawlings’ factor and the Volta region?

To me, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has a taunting task of proving himself as worthy of a leader. In the same manner his boss (Akufo Addo) insisted againt all odds, when he (Bawumia) “wasn’t part of the anointed NPP” that he Bawumia became his running mate. He went through.

This time, it will be a mistake for Dr Bawumia to pick someone from the Ashanti Region, for a want of a better expression, the NPP is so boisterous with a failed -Wontumi leadership who has failed to bring peace and cohesion into the party but rather employs divide and rule tactics.

For the first time in the history of the so called Dankwa-Busia-Dombo tradition, a northerner believed to be from Dombo rep has taken the reins of NPP.

Let me say it, clearly, for the first time, the unanimous and thunderous support for Bawumia was unimaginable and not even Albert Adu Buahene or even JA Kuffour got this privilege.

For me, the NPP wanted to soften the NDC’s John Mahama’s sharp teeth over the years, of which the NPP had become an Akan Party” not national in nature and will not allow a non Akan to lead the party birthed his massive support.

This, no doubt, had affected the NPP in getting an appreciable number from the non-Akan regions.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia must know that all eyes are watching, and he has no option than to perform and deliver to show the essence of a regional and cultural mix in the governance structure of Ghana.

He must stop “the yesir! Master” and take his destiny into his own hands.

Names such as Dr. Opoku Prempeh, Frema Opare, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, Dr Yaw Adutwum and others have come out. These are great guys except Frema Opare.

She has nothing, to me as a leader who can help lead a nation, no charisma, no command of the people, and she has just outlived the politics of Ghana, for me, she hasn’t proven to be a strong person in the hitherto strong office as Chief of Staff.

But she is a nice person from afar though but that is not good enough for that serious position.

NAPO is a great guy, but this time of political mood not for him, he will overcrowd Bawumia and may not be able to win flooring voters for Bawumia.

He has hit the best character for that office but certainly not as Ghanaian as we are. He speaks his mind like Adu Buahene and Akufo-Addo and JJ, though bold, but I think he doesn’t have the chemistry to win-back disgruntled for the NPP.

Dr. Adu Twum for me is no, no, not because he cannot perform, his understanding of issues are so deep and strict to a point that people think he-lives -out -of -Ghana standard.

If we want to be strict discipline, law-abiding and no free political gifts, then he comes handy. And Ghana politics is not like that.

Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu best of all of them, a walking encyclopedia, a smart and intelligent politician, but he rather must be a chief of staff and a special presidential advisor.

If Bawumia picks him, Bawumia will feel inferior and that might breed confusion like Dr Akaa and Rawlings. Osei Kyei Mensah to me would have been a fine flagbearer.

Having said all these, Bawumia should de-Ashantilize the NPP. Ashanti Region will still support NPP but can make unrolls into other no-go areas.

Pick a running mate from Bono Region, Eastern Region, Western Region, but not the Volta Region Central or Greater Accra Region.

Picking a running mate from Accra or Central will not change the dynamics of the region.

Greater Accra is a battlefield and anyone can win.

Dr. Bawumia must own NPP, must own voters and present himself better to Ghanaians and reorient them, he may be able to surprise JDM, but it’s also not easy to break the 8 before the very eyes of John Mahama who continuous to enjoy love from his party.

My opinion though.

According to him, the running mate for NPP will be announced at the right time.

Dr Bawumia has been under intense pressure to name a running mate for the upcoming elections since his election as the NPP flagbearer in November 2023.

Speaking on JoyNews on March 25, Mr Botwe stated that there is no contest in the process of selecting a running mate.

“We are not divided at all. There is no sign that we are divided. We have had successful polling station elections, successful electoral area elections, successful constituency elections, successful regional elections, successful national elections, and successful presidential elections. We are united. We will do it at the right time, and we will name the running mate. So far as I’m concerned, there is no contest for running mate,” he said.

The Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare said the NPP will set aside any internal differences to win the upcoming elections.

“The love for the party is so supreme that people were willing yesterday night to put away all differences and rally together and put Ashanti forward and become the biggest contributor to the breaking of the 8.”

NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, stated that the party will not allow the NDC to win the 2024 election.

“They can’t stop us. We are united. We are breaking the 8. We are not going to give it to you. John Dramani Mahama, you are not the option. We are not going to give it to you for you to spoil the good work Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has done.”

“We are not going to give it to you. We are united. We love Ghana. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is going to succeed Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. We are breaking the eight,” he said.

Bawumia’s running mate creating tension, possible division – COKA https://www.adomonline.com/bawumias-running-mate-creating-tension-possible-division-coka/ Sun, 24 Mar 2024 19:32:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2372514 A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah has expressed concern about the party’s unity and strategy ahead of the 2024 elections as the race for a running mate continues to threaten efforts.

With Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the flagbearer and various preparations underway, including the formation of campaign teams, the focus now shifts to the crucial decision of selecting a running mate.

But this decision has brought intense lobbying within the party, particularly in the Ashanti Region.

The decision to pick the running mate from Ashanti Region has led to tensions and divisions, which Chairman COKA as he is popularly known has warned could affect the party’s stronghold.

Highlighting the significance of the region in securing victory, Chairman COKA has stressed the need for unity and avoidance of any actions that may further divide the party.

Speaking in an interview, Chairman COKA said “I appeal to the party’s flagbearer to expedite the selection process for the running mate. The importance of timely decision-making in averting potential crisis and strengthening the party’s position is critical.”

Referring to the NPP’s constitution, which stipulates a deadline for selecting the running mate, he also underscored the urgency of adhering to these guidelines to prevent deepening cracks within the party.

Despite his disappointment in losing a regional chairmanship contest, Chairman COKA reaffirmed his commitment to the NPP’s cause.

He called on all members, leaders, including those who were unsuccessful in the primaries, to rally behind the campaign to secure victory in this year’s general elections.

He touched on the unity of purpose and expressed confidence in the party’s ability to overcome challenges and emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.

In the NPP’s presidential primary held late last year, Vice-President Dr. Bawumia secured 118,210 votes, amounting to 61.47% of the total valid votes cast, triumphing over his main rival, Mr. Agyapong, who garnered 71,996 votes, representing 37.41% of the votes.

Dr. Bawumia has not officially unveiled his running mate following an extension granted for the selection process in December.

During an appearance on the KSM Show on Accra-based Pan African Television on Friday (February 23), Mr. Agyapong emphasized that Dr. Bawumia should be given the autonomy to make his own decisions.

“I wouldn’t do it, I just want to allow him to do whatever he wants to do. I don’t want to be vice. What am I going to say. I believe in democracy so, I want it to work. I will stay back and watch and whatever I have to do, I will do to contribute,” he said.

“But I won’t accept vice as, if at all cost, Kennedy Agyapong has to be among the leaders. One thing I have always said is that you don’t need to be president to effect change in people’s lives. I have businesses that have employed many Ghanaians and put food on their table, and it’s self-gratifying,” Mr Agyapong added.

Prof Onyinah has come up strongly as a possible running mate for Dr Bawumia in the December 7 election.

The renowned man of God in a Facebook post on Sunday heightened suspicion as many interpreted his message to be a confirmation of the rumours.

On the back of the varied reactions to the post, Prof Onyinah in another post indicated that the initial message has nothing to do with what is going.

He explained that the post was coined based on the Church of Pentecost’s 2015 theme, adding it has many lessons.

Election 2024: Ursula Owusu-Ekuful responds to running mate speculation https://www.adomonline.com/election-2024-ursula-owusu-ekuful-responds-to-running-mate-speculation/ Sat, 20 Jan 2024 13:38:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2344369 Minister for Communications and Digitilisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has responded to speculation of being chosen as running mate to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 election.

The Ablekuma West Member of Parliament (MP) said she has had several conversations with Dr Bawumia but none has been about vice presidential candidate position.

Following the Vice President’s election as the NPP flagbearer on November 4, 2023, several names have popped up as potential running mates.

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Energy Minister), Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum (Education Minister), and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (Majority Leader), have been rumoured as frontrunners.

The Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare and Ursula Owusu-Ekuful are also said to be contenders.

However, when confirmation was sought from the MP in an interview, she appeared surprised, responding in Twi ‘saa’ to wit really?

“I have had numerous discussions with Dr Bawumia, but we have not talked about the running mate position. We have work to do. I’d want us to leave him to select his own running mate.

He [Bawumia] should take his time to find someone he wants. We have been talking about what we need to do this year to help citizens and our chances as a party,” she said on Accra-based UTV.

John Kumah: Brilliant, gravitas and totally fit to be Bawumia’s running-mate https://www.adomonline.com/john-kumah-brilliant-gravitas-and-totally-fit-to-be-bawumias-running-mate-2/ Wed, 20 Dec 2023 15:14:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2334939 One of the best things that can befall any politician is to do a turnaround and see his popularity accelerate.

And oh yes, it has been incredible watching the rapid acceleration of the political journey and meteoric rise of the member of parliament for Ejisu and Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. John Kumah.

Indeed, you couldn’t get a more urban, progressive or personally attractive man than Dr. John Kumah, and truly not many people in the public eye give you the kind of impression that he gives to the electorate.

From a bloody obscure corner as a youth activist to a national prominence and figurehead, John Kumah has charmed his audience and disarmed his opponents.

When he first took his major appointment under Akufo-Addo as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programme (NEIP) in 2017, he handled the portfolio with finesse, deftness and excellence.

When he was elevated as a Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, John Kumah consistently went out of his way to deliver for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Truly, Dr. John Kumah is an authentic star, who lights up every room he enters and just like John Agyekum Kufuor, John Kumah deploys his courtesy and charm for political purposes.

Just watch him in action when he’s leading the political conversation. He does not sneer or talk down to his audience, as most political actors would do. Instead, he wows them.

There were times that I watched John Kumah compliment his political opponents even amid uncomplimentary hostility and in doing so, he pulled the New Patriotic Party (NPP) towards both the centre ground and acceptance and succeeded in winning a lot of NDC youths and undecided voters onto the side of the NPP.

And if you are tempted to think this sort of courtesy across the political divide is a mere bourgeois triviality, remember how effective this maturity of style has also been in larger contexts.

Sometimes a line or two from a politician’s public advocacy resonates or echoes to perhaps evoke something of a more optimistic, inspirational political epoch.

Dr Kumah understands this so well. He understands that policy communication isn’t about self-affirmation, but rather, it is about persuading people, changing minds, and winning hearts and minds.

He also understands that dealing directly with the issue, even helping your opponent build their best argument, and then demolishing that is the soundest way to argue if you really want to come up with a constructive solution to an issue.

In actual fact, the Akufo-Addo government’s deficit reduction plan relies on IMF policy credibility and John Kumah has been at the heart of the conversation with convincing arguments, a calm demeanour and brittle sentiment. That pretty much sums up what he has been up to at the Finance Ministry.

In 3 years, he has risen from the obscurity of a young political player to become a force in the public advocacy space with regards to economics, finance and public policy.

Essentially, John Kumah has built a solid track record in a short time and that track record contains much more than his enemies—or even many of his friends have been ready to acknowledge.

So, the question is, why should he not be Bawumia’s running mate for the 2024 elections? Why should John Kumah not be the man to leap forward and be on the ticket to save the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from itself in 2024? My own answer is that if the Deputy Finance Minister is not the answer, there is something desperately wrong with the question.

In all honesty, a certain grace has marked John Kumah’s political outings since he emerged onto the national stage. He has not just taken to the realities of Ghana politics better than any other names being linked to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as running mate.

He has also done it infinitely less condescendingly than Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Joe Osei Owusu and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu would have done.

And now the major talking points on both social and traditional media show what a key asset John Kumah is to the NPP.

If the day ever comes that John Kumah becomes Bawumia’s running mate, I shall be among those NDC activists pitching our camp in favour of the NPP.

To you, John Kumah, stay right where you are and stick to what you’re good at. The world has already taken notice of you.

I shall be back.

Bawumia asks for more time to choose running mate https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-asks-for-more-time-to-choose-running-mate/ Wed, 06 Dec 2023 16:37:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2328972

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has requested an extension of time for the selection of his running mate for the 2024 election.

This was at a crunch meeting held at Alisa Hotel in Accra on Wednesday.

Adom News’ Akowuah Gyamera who was at the venue reported that, the General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, announced the development after the meeting.

“However, upon request from the presidential candidate that’s because his election was done on the 4th of November 23, he needs a bit of time to continue with his consultation before it brings the proposed name for running mate to the National Council. And this was unanimously agreed by the National Council,” he added.

Per the NPP’s constitution, a running mate is to be selected 12 months before a major election if the President is not the candidate.

Twelve months hence is December 6, a day to Ghana’s next general elections, which meant the party had today to name a running mate, unless the National Council suspends the party constitutional provision and directs otherwise.

However, Mr Kodua said Dr Bawumia’s call for extension is to make way for further consultations on the choice of running mate.

The National Executive Council (NEC), he stated has agreed to his appeal.

Meanwhile, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Energy Minister), Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum (Education Minister), and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (Majority Leader), have been rumoured as frontrunners.

Others like John Ampontuah Kumah, Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Ejisu in Ashanti, and Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, are making the rounds as well.

There has been even the mention of Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare.

Dr. Hamid, a former Information Minister, cited Napo as he is popularly known’s long-standing association with the party, and deep understanding of its ideologies, and principles as qualities that make him well-suited for the role.

In an interview with JoyNews on Sunday, November 26, Dr. Hamid emphasized that Dr. Opoku Prempeh has demonstrated competence in politics and brings significant political value to the party, making him a compelling choice that cannot be overlooked.

“The candidate won’t ask for my opinion, but if he were to ask my opinion that all the names that have been thrown around who will give us political value and political capital, I would say Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

“First of all, he is a political colossus in our tradition. He has been a political participant in our political tradition for ages.”

“So he knows the party well and knows our philosophies and principles of our party. The other thing is that, ever since he held political office, he has accomplished. I was in cabinet with him and for the four years that we were in cabinet, he at the Ministry of Education tabled and passed the most reforming laws.”

Tensions are rising within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as Members of Parliament vie for the position of running mate to Dr. Bawumia, following his recent victory in the flagbearership election.

Already, intense discussions and coalitions have surfaced among MPs from the ruling party regarding potential choices for the running mate position.

Several names have been circulating, including Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister for Energy; Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu; First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei Owusu; and Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

Parliamentarians who spoke to JoyNews in different interviews emphasised the importance of allowing Dr Bawumia the space to make a thoughtful decision without being unduly pressured into selecting a running mate for the 2024 elections.

Bawumia has not had any discussion on choice of running mate – Sammi Awuku https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-has-not-had-any-discussion-on-choice-of-running-mate-sammi-awuku/ Wed, 08 Nov 2023 07:27:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2316064 A member of the Bawumia campaign team, Sammi Awuku has shot down suggestions that the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is already considering his choice of a running mate for the 2024 polls.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Tuesday, November 11, he said the Vice President is not in a rush to name his running mate.

According to him, Dr Bawumia is an extremely analytical person and consults broadly on issues, and so “he would be taking the views of people he knows and when he is ready, when the time comes, he would pick the right man.

“For now, let me issue a disclaimer. The Vice President has not discussed with any member of his inner team or bigger team about his choice that he would be recommending to the National Council,” he clarified.

His remark comes amid intense competition among some New Patriotic Party Members of Parliament over who partners the Vice President.

On the first day of sitting following the flagbearership election, there have been talks among MPs from the governing party about his choice with several coalitions forming to back the various names that have emerged.

The names include Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh; Minister for Energy, Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu and Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.

Reacting to this, Mr Awuku said they appreciate the fact that there is so much excitement about who Dr Bawumia would choose as running mate.

However, the Vice President is presently focused on how to unite the party.

He also stated that Dr Bawumia is considering how to sort out the issues about the selection of parliamentary candidates for orphan constituencies.

Meanwhile, Kwadaso MP, Kingsley Nyarko has suggested that a running mate must be chosen from the Ashanti region, since the region holds the key to the electoral fortunes of the NPP.

“There are a lot of competent personalities from the region, so I don’t think that it is out of place to get someone from there. He [Dr Bawumia] can decide to choose the running mate from any other region but I think that a running mate from the Ashanti region will be a step in the right direction,” he said.
