Speaking on Joy FM’s PM Express, Shamima Muslim stressed the need for Ghanaians to demand accountability from public officials, emphasizing that no administration should be allowed to misuse public funds without consequences.

“We must not give political actors any power, and that includes us, the NDC. We must not give them any power to think that at any point in time, they can take the citizens for granted, do what they want, do as they please with our collective resources, and go and enjoy whatever loot they may have illegally acquired through the instrument of their position of power,” she stated.

Shamima Muslim noted that several major corruption scandals occurred under the Akufo-Addo government, yet no significant action was taken.

She referenced the infamous moniker of President Akufo-Addo as a “clearing agent,” arguing that his administration actively dismissed corruption allegations rather than investigating them thoroughly.

“There’s a reason why His Excellency, the former president, was called a clearing agent. Why should we not take a second look at that? If the outgoing administration showed no commitment in even investigating some of these matters but rather cleared some of these cases even before investigations were to commence or be completed, then there’s a fundamental problem with governance,” she asserted.

Citing specific cases, she mentioned the controversial National Cathedral project, where $58 million was spent with little to show for it, and the Pwalugu Dam project, which reportedly saw $12 million expended without any tangible development.

“These are the main questions that require looking into,” she emphasized. “And of course, the raft of cases of politically exposed persons acquiring state assets for pittance are issues we need to ask questions about. If they need to return those assets, they should return those assets.”

She assured the public that under the incoming administration, accountability would be prioritized without unjust persecution.

“If I need to assure Ghanaians of anything, it is that under the watch of His Excellency, no one will be unjustifiably persecuted,” she said, adding that the Attorney General is expected to outline measures to address these concerns.

We were misled on Akufo-Addo statue unveiling – Lower Dixcove chief reveals https://www.adomonline.com/we-were-misled-on-akufo-addo-statue-unveiling-lower-dixcove-chief-reveals/ Sat, 25 Jan 2025 19:06:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2497164 The Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove, Nana Akwasi Agyeman IV, has refuted claims made by former Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, suggesting that the chiefs of the Western Region funded the controversial statue of former President Akufo-Addo, which was placed in front of the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital in Sekondi.

The statue was unveiled during Akufo-Addo’s thank-you tour of the region in November 2024.

Speaking to a Takoradi-based radio station, Nana Akwasi Agyeman, who was present at the unveiling, clarified that he was unaware of the statue’s existence and had been ambushed by Okyere Darko Mensah to participate in the event.

“I promised not to comment on the statue issue due to the widespread insults we chiefs have received. But I, Nana Akwasi Agyeman, can confirm that the chiefs of the Western Region did not fund the statue,” he stated.

The chief emphasized that no chief contributed financially to the construction of the statue. “If any chief contributed, I am yet to know,” he said, adding that the chiefs never met as a House of Chiefs to discuss or approve the statue in honor of the former President.

Nana Akwasi Agyeman further described how he was caught off guard by Okyere Darko Mensah and involved in the unveiling of the statue.

“We were invited to attend the former President’s thank-you tour, and we met him at the GNAT Hall. It was there that Okyere Darko Mensah asked me to join them in presenting a gift to the President, and we would head to Effia-Nkwanta Hospital. It was only upon arrival that I learned it was a statue. I didn’t even know it was a statue,” he explained.

He added that seven Paramount Chiefs attended the event, and it was there that he was informed that he would help unveil the statue.

“Honestly, I didn’t want to participate, but I didn’t want to create a scene, so I stayed quiet. We unveiled the statue and were asked to speak in honor of the President. I thanked him personally, not on behalf of the chiefs of the Western Region, as he had visited me in the hospital after my 2019 attack,” he said.

The statue of Akufo-Addo, which sparked controversy due to public dissatisfaction over his perceived minimal contribution to the region’s development, was destroyed by unknown individuals on January 13, 2025, following widespread backlash.

More than 100 mining-related licenses issued in the final week of Akufo-Addo’s gov’t https://www.adomonline.com/more-than-100-mining-related-licenses-issued-in-the-final-week-of-akufo-addos-govt/ Fri, 24 Jan 2025 15:27:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2496851 Data from the Ghana Mining Repository shows that over a hundred mining-related licenses were issued in the last week of former President Akufo-Addo’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

Out of the 103 licenses issued in 2025, 102 were granted between January 1 and January 6, before the swearing-in of President John Dramani Mahama.

This means only one license has been issued under the current government.

The licenses include 21 small-scale mining licenses, prospecting licenses, and mining support services licenses.

This brings the total number of active licenses across the country to 2,127.

This development is particularly concerning amidst heightened public uproar over the impact of illegal mining on the country, especially the destruction of forest reserves and water bodies.

The mining activities have affected major export commodities such as cocoa, leading to low production and the inability to meet buyer demands.

According to reports, Ghana experienced its lowest cocoa production in over two decades last season, reducing foreign exchange earnings.

Akufo-Addo will never appoint critics to his gov’t as Mahama has done – Kwakye Ofosu https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-will-never-appoint-critics-to-his-govt-as-mahama-has-done-kwakye-ofosu/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 13:33:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2495356 Acting Spokesperson to President John Dramani Mahama, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has lauded the President’s inclusive approach to governance, contrasting it sharply with the leadership style of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu referred to the appointments of H. Kwasi Prempeh of the Centre for Democratic Development Ghana (CDD-Ghana) and Nana Yaa Gyantuah, a former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).

According to Mr Kwakye Ofosu, President Mahama’s decision to appoint these persons to his government demonstrates his maturity and commitment to fostering diverse perspectives.

Speaking on JoyFM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, January 21, Mr Ofosu Kwakye stated that the inclusive nature of President Mahama’s administration is a testament to his confidence and dedication to national unity.

“President Mahama has shown that he prioritises the nation’s interests over personal comfort by appointing individuals who may not always agree with him. This level of tolerance is unparalleled,” he remarked.

He went on to critique former President Akufo-Addo, suggesting that such an inclusive approach would have been unthinkable under his administration. “Nana Akufo-Addo would never appoint critics to his government.

His administration was characterised by an unwillingness to engage with dissenting voices, which weakened the governance process,” Ofosu Kwakye asserted.

The acting spokesperson further underscored the benefits of President Mahama’s approach, noting that the inclusion of diverse views enriches policy-making and ensures a broader representation of the Ghanaian populace.

“This is the kind of leadership that strengthens democracy—one where critics are given a seat at the table to contribute meaningfully to national development,” he concluded.

Akufo-Addo govt owed road contractors as little as ¢5k – Kwame Agbodza https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-govt-owed-road-contractors-as-little-as-%c2%a25k-kwame-agbodza/ Mon, 20 Jan 2025 14:41:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2494889 Kwame Agbodza, the Roads and Highways Minister-designate, has revealed that some road contractors in Ghana are owed as little as ¢5,000 by the government, highlighting concerns over the management of road toll funds.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee on Monday, January 20, Agbodza discussed the controversial cancellation of road tolls by the Akufo-Addo administration.

He expressed surprise at the decision, stating that instead of cancelling the tolls, the government should have worked to improve the system by addressing the leakages and enhancing its effectiveness.

Mr. Agbodza criticised the move as an act of illegality, pointing out that such a decision could not be made unilaterally.

He suggested that there was negligence in how the cancellation was handled, particularly as the government had claimed the road toll was generating only ¢80 million.

The minister-designate emphasised that road tolls would be reintroduced, albeit in a modern form.

He stated that the future system would involve technology, allowing for fairer and more efficient collection without the need for physical road obstructions or manual toll collection, ensuring a smoother experience for drivers.

“We decided to caution the government not to cancel the road toll but rather find a way to make it better, which means that we should find a way to block the leakages and enhance it. So, it was surprising that it was cancelled or they claimed they zeroed it. For me, it was an act of illegality, but it had an act and was a law, so they couldn’t unilaterally do that. I believe there was some level of negligence in the way it was done.”

“They claimed the road toll was accruing just ¢80 million, but today there are road contractors working in Ghana who are owed as little as ¢5,000. So, the road toll is coming back, but not in the form of building obstructions on the road for drivers to stop and someone taking money from them. It will come in the form of technology that is fair and will make it easy to collect,” he stated.

673km of roads constructed since 2017, not Akufo-Addo’s 11,000km – Kwame Agbodza https://www.adomonline.com/673km-of-roads-constructed-since-2017-not-akufo-addos-11000km-kwame-agbodza/ Mon, 20 Jan 2025 13:01:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2494848 Roads and Highways Minister-designate, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has challenged the claims made by the Akufo-Addo administration regarding the construction of roads across the country.

During his vetting on Monday, January 20, Agbodza refuted the government’s assertion that 11,000 kilometres of roads had been constructed since 2017, stating that the actual figure is significantly lower, at just 673 kilometres.

Agbodza, who was speaking before the Appointments Committee, stated, “The claim that 11,000 kilometres of roads have been constructed is misleading. The reality is that, since 2017, only 673 kilometres of roads have been constructed. This figure is based on the actual data and records of road projects completed during that period.”

He went on to emphasize the discrepancy, arguing that the inflated figures were part of an attempt to mislead the public and paint an overly positive picture of the administration’s achievements in road development.

The Minister-designate further noted that the discrepancy in road construction figures had broader implications for the country’s infrastructure development.

“It’s crucial for the public to be informed of the true extent of road construction efforts,” Agbodza remarked.

“With such misleading statistics, it becomes difficult to hold the government accountable for the real progress made in the sector.”

He highlighted that despite claims of significant road construction, many communities across the country continue to suffer from poor road conditions, which hinder economic growth and development.

Mr. Agbodza also stressed the need for a more transparent and accurate approach to reporting infrastructure progress.

“We need to ensure that road construction projects are properly tracked and that the information provided to the public reflects reality. If we want to move forward, we must start with honesty and integrity in reporting our achievements,” he concluded.

JoyNews Poll: Akufo-Addo, his govt’s ‘killer’ taxes and nepotism blamed for NPP’s 2024 defeat https://www.adomonline.com/joynews-poll-akufo-addo-his-govts-killer-taxes-and-nepotism-blamed-for-npps-2024-defeat/ Thu, 16 Jan 2025 06:31:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2493491 A survey conducted by Joy News through its social media platforms has delivered a damning verdict on former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, holding him largely responsible for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) stunning defeat in the December 2024 election.

The survey, which sought public views on factors contributing to the NPP’s shocking loss, revealed that the majority of respondents blamed former President Akufo-Addo, citing his government’s harsh economic policies, nepotism, corruption, and the arrogance of some of his appointees as key reasons for the party’s defeat in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

Akufo-Addo to Blame
The most common sentiment expressed by respondents was criticism of former President Akufo-Addo, who was widely accused of failing to take adequate action, ultimately causing the NPP’s flagbearer and parliamentary candidates to suffer for his administration’s shortcomings.

Many respondents particularly criticized the former President for endorsing harsh and insensitive economic policies such as the e-levy, betting tax, COVID-19 levy, and poor debt management strategies.

Additionally, he was accused of shielding his cousin, former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, despite widespread criticism of his handling of the economy. Respondents highlighted that his delayed removal was perceived as a failure in leadership.

Nana Akufo-Addo was also criticized for his perceived arrogance, with many referring to instances where he reportedly instructed chiefs to stand to greet him, an action which some respondents felt disrespected traditional authorities and angered the electorate.

Several respondents further accused the former President of causing apathy within the NPP by refusing to heed internal advice and make timely changes in his government. This, they said, denied opportunities to deserving party members and created dissatisfaction among the grassroots.

The refusal to remove Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister, despite overwhelming calls from NPP MPs and ordinary Ghanaians, was cited as evidence of his unresponsiveness to public concerns.

Exorbitant Taxes
Beyond personal criticism, many respondents slammed certain policies under Akufo-Addo’s administration, claiming they brought economic hardship on Ghanaians.

Central to their concerns were taxes such as the e-levy, COVID-19 levy, and the betting tax, along with the government’s debt management approach.

Both former President Akufo-Addo and ex-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta faced strong criticism for these policies, which were described as contributing significantly to the party’s unpopularity, even among its own supporters.

Arrogant Appointees, Corruption & the ‘Clearing Agent’ Tag
Some respondents also criticized government appointees, accusing them of being arrogant and inaccessible, which they argued alienated them from the electorate and caused further disaffection for the party.

Corruption was another major theme, with several respondents revisiting scandals from the Akufo-Addo administration. Many pointed to the former President’s reputation as a “clearing agent,” a nickname he earned for exonerating appointees accused of corruption without proper investigations.

Neglect of Strongholds
The survey further highlighted dissatisfaction with the Akufo-Addo government’s neglect of key projects, particularly in the party’s strongholds such as the Ashanti Region, as well as parts of the Western and Bono/Ahafo Regions.

In the Ashanti Region, many respondents faulted Akufo-Addo for failing to prioritize major projects, especially the Suame Interchange, which they believed could have boosted the party’s fortunes.

Conclusion
In summary, most respondents who participated in the Joy News survey attributed the NPP’s defeat to former President Akufo-Addo’s leadership, blaming his administration’s policies and actions for the loss of both Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the presidential race and the unprecedented defeat of numerous NPP parliamentary candidates across the country.

Prophet Joshua, who also serves as the founder of Glory and Dominion Ministry, claimed he had received a spiritual revelation showing the potential consequences of such actions.

He declared that the defacing could have profound negative effects on the Sekondi/Takoradi area and the larger Western Region.

In an interview, Prophet Joshua chastised the vandals, calling their actions disrespectful and divisive.

He urged the government to issue a stern warning against such behavior, cautioning that failure to act could lead to more widespread issues.

He further warned that anyone who dares to vandalize the new statue he plans to erect would bring curses upon themselves.

National Cathedral: Use Akufo-Addo’s end-of-service benefits to cover pit – Prof. Gyampo to Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/national-cathedral-use-akufo-addos-end-of-service-benefits-to-cover-pit-prof-gyampo-to-mahama/ Wed, 15 Jan 2025 15:09:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2493301 Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, has suggested to President John Mahama that he consider using former President Akufo-Addo’s end-of-service benefits to fill the massive pit dug for the National Cathedral project.

The suggestion, made in an interview with Adom News, reflects Professor Gyampo’s deep concerns about the funding of the controversial project.

Professor Gyampo, who has been vocal about the National Cathedral’s progress and funding, urged President Mahama to approach the issue with caution.

He stated that the project, which was initially championed by Akufo-Addo as a personal vow to God, should not become a financial burden on the national purse.

“Over $50 million has been spent just to dig a hole for this cathedral project,” Professor Gyampo remarked.

“This is a waste of resources, and we must question the direction of this project, especially when the country faces numerous economic challenges.”

The Political Science expert further argued that Mr. Mahama, while inheriting the mantle of leadership, is not obliged to fulfill the personal vow of his predecessor.

Drawing a parallel to the biblical story of King Solomon building the Temple for God in place of his father David, Prof. Gyampo emphasized that Mahama should not feel compelled to carry the weight of his predecessor’s personal promises.

“Former President Akufo-Addo made this vow to God, not President Mahama.

“We are now witnessing the consequences of that vow. It is not President Mahama’s responsibility to fulfill it. We must ask whether this is the best use of the nation’s resources,” he said.

Invasion of state institutions: A result of mistrust in Akufo-Addo’s gov’t ? https://www.adomonline.com/invasion-of-state-institutions-a-result-of-mistrust-in-akufo-addos-govt/ Sat, 11 Jan 2025 16:47:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491884 It has been a month since Ghanaians queued to vote in the 2024 general elections, and we have all witnessed the outcome of the December 7 polls.

While I will not delve too much into the results from the various constituencies, the issues that have arisen following those results, particularly post-election violence, are concerning.

Post-election violence can take many forms, and in some cases, it can be so severe that lives and property are lost, blood is shed, and other disastrous consequences occur. In certain situations, curfews must be imposed even during the daytime, making innocent citizens uncomfortable in their own country.

However, I commend the democratic spirit of the people of Ghana for not allowing matters to escalate to that point. Above all, we give glory to God for always sheltering our beloved country, Ghana.

Now, my concern is: why are we still witnessing the invasion of state institutions by alleged National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters? In some cases, these individuals may not even be supporters of the NDC, but I will leave that matter to the security agencies to addres

In my view, post-election disturbances can be attributed to several factors, with one key issue being trust. Trust, at its core, means believing in something or someone.

For example, if you entrust your cook with money to buy groceries, you wouldn’t feel the need to check with the shopkeeper about how much the items cost. If you did, it would suggest that you do not trust the cook, perhaps because you suspect that they might have embezzled some of the money.

In such a case, you would likely be looking for ways to dismiss the cook and, once you’ve done so, would likely investigate how much they’ve stolen during their time with you.

In my opinion, this may be exactly what is happening in Ghana regarding those who are invading state institutions and demanding that workers vacate their offices.

Another question we should ask is: why are the invaders targeting certain institutions rather than all state offices?

So far, there have been issues of invasion of NADMOMetro Mass Transport CompanyForestry CommissionState Houses in Osu, and others that have not been reported on.

As an ordinary citizen who is gradually making my way through various stages of life, I want to know if the invasion of these institutions by alleged NDC supporters is a result of a lack of trust in the immediate past government.

Could it be that the motivation behind these actions is not political ideology but a deep mistrust that has built up over the past eight years?

After all, the new government has already assumed power, so what is prompting these actions?

Well, you may want to say that this can only happen when the trust Ghanaians had in Akufo-Addo’s government in 2016 has eroded after eight years of governance.

In my view, if the people no longer trust the previous administration, they would seek ways to take out the remnants of policies and individuals they perceive as linked to the former government, maybe, these “seeds” planted by the previous regime are found in some of the invaded institutions.

Angry youth will only invade these institutions when they feel that they were denied jobs based on political affiliation. They are more likely to act when they know that the past government employed its cronies in those institutions.

Looking back to the aftermath of the 2016 election, did the country witness the same level of disturbance that we are seeing today? While there were misunderstandings between party agents and the invasion of some state institutions, it was not to the extent of a continuous invasion.

Could this suggest that people didn’t have as many issues with the then administration of President John Mahama, which is why the transition to Nana Akufo-Addo’s presidency occurred with fewer disturbances?

In short, is it an issue that the invasions of state offices can only be happening because of the injustices, lack of transparency, corruption, economic hardship, and the “winner-takes-all” mentality that Ghanaians have endured during the eight years of NPP governance?

If it is so, then these actions do not reflect well on the “much-respected” Akufo-Addo. We had hoped for calm after his presidency, but unfortunately, that has not been the case. I know my opinion may not sit well with many, but if you were in the shoes of those involved in the invasions, you might perhaps understand my perspective.

This also brings to mind the numerous alleged scandals reported under the Akufo-Addo government, to the new government’s Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) committee.

After hours of discussing these issues with my brother-in-law, which motivated me to write this piece, he said “Indeed, history will judge the eight years of NPP governance in Ghana”.

In conclusion, I suggest that, let us not be too quick to blame those attacking state institutions. They are simply seeking public justice, even though their methods are not the most appropriate.

I urge them to cease these actions and give time for the man they trusted and overwhelmingly voted for to demonstrate his ability to address these issues.

Enough is enough. Let the person you entrusted with the mandate handle the remaining matters.

If you believe you are an ideal candidate for a position, why align yourself with the unskilled and distract the process? Set aside your anger and focus on achieving the things that you have not accomplished in the past eight years.

Lastly, the new government must also deliver on its promises so that future disturbances of this nature are not recorded.

Akufo-Addo consulted Council of State; it was decided the people won’t be pardoned – Former Dep. AG https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-consulted-council-of-state-it-was-decided-the-people-wont-be-pardoned-former-dep-ag/ Sat, 11 Jan 2025 14:01:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491880 Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, has revealed that the Council of State, in consultation with the former President, decided not to grant presidential pardons to the individuals in question a few days ago.

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on January 6, exercised his prerogative of mercy to pardon eleven prisoners, in accordance with Article 72 (1) of the Constitution, just a day before the end of his tenure.

His decision followed a thorough review of their cases, with consideration given to their health, length of imprisonment, and other mitigating factors, according to a statement released.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, January 11, Mr. Tuah-Yeboah stated that the former president had submitted a letter to the Council of State, which was vetted by the Council on January 2.

He explained that the president consulted with the Council of State, and ultimately, a decision was made not to pardon the individuals on the list.

“So, the President consulted the Council of State, and at the end of the day, a decision was taken that these people should not be pardoned,” he said.

He also added, “The letter that was forwarded to the Council of State was leaked, and instead of most people, including some media personnel, taking time to look at that letter, they decided to come to a conclusion that the President had pardoned some people. Because that letter was a letter that the President had sent to the Council of State as part of the consultation process.”

Mr. Tuah-Yeboah further revealed that, despite recent speculations, these individuals remain in prison custody as of now.

The nation’s greatest enemy is gone – Kumchacha says of Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/the-nations-greatest-enemy-is-gone-kumchacha-says-of-akufo-addo/ Thu, 09 Jan 2025 09:03:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491129 The Founder of Heaven’s Gate Ministry, Prophet Nicholas Osei, has openly criticized outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo, blaming him for what he described as the poor management of Ghana’s economy.

Known popularly as Prophet Kumchacha, the controversial preacher voiced his dissatisfaction with the outgoing administration during the swearing-in of John Dramani Mahama as president on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

“We can all attest to the bad governance Nana Akufo-Addo brought to the nation. The whole world knows Nana Akufo-Addo was the worst president Ghana ever had,” Prophet Kumchacha said.

According to him, Akufo-Addo’s leadership was detrimental to the country, and he expressed relief at the end of the president’s tenure.

Describing the transition of power as a significant moment, Kumchacha declared, “Today marks his final days in office and the new beginning of good and better governance. That is why I’m here.”

He further added that the day’s event – the swearing-in of John Mahama – was historic.

Kumchacha did not mince his words when referring to former President Akufo-Addo, labeling him as the nation’s “greatest enemy.”

He stated, “When we say go and look for the enemy and you meet Akufo-Addo, he’s the enemy.”

The prophet continued by criticizing the former president’s priorities, pointing out the controversial $58 million National Cathedral project, which he described as now a “swimming pool” that Akufo-Addo had initiated.

Prophet Kumchacha expressed optimism for Ghana’s future, promising that the next four years would bring “a massive transformation” under the leadership of the newly sworn-in President John Mahama.

Former Chief Justice challenges Akufo-Addo’s stance on constitution’s perfection https://www.adomonline.com/former-chief-justice-challenges-akufo-addos-stance-on-constitutions-perfection/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 07:10:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490608 Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo expressed her disagreement with former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s claim that Ghana’s 1992 Constitution is perfect and requires no review.

In an interview on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, January 7, she called for an open-minded approach to constitutional reforms, emphasizing the need for periodic updates to ensure its relevance in addressing contemporary challenges.

“I’ve never agreed with the former president that the Constitution is so perfect that it doesn’t need to be reviewed,” Sophia Akuffo stated.

“The Constitution, being a living document, has to be nursed, nurtured, tweaked, and massaged. From time to time, we must take a look to see whether it continues in every respect to suit the current day purposes.”

The former Chief Justice described a review process as a vital aspect of constitutional governance, rejecting the notion that amending the Constitution undermines its credibility.

“There is nothing wrong with reviewing or revising a constitution to make sure that every provision serves the purposes of the people,” she explained.

She backed former President John Mahama’s recent call for revisiting the constitutional review process initiated over a decade ago but left incomplete.

“I am fully in agreement with President Mahama that there should be a review of the process started over a decade ago. Unfortunately, it came to, how would I say? An unceremonious pause,” she said.

Sophia Akuffo pointed out that after more than three decades of using the current Constitution, certain provisions have proven inadequate or outdated.

“We need to acknowledge that there are certain parts that are not working the way we had anticipated,” she remarked. “There are ways it can be better.”

Among the many themes he touched on, his warm acknowledgement of outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo stood out, particularly the anecdote of being persistently called “Johnny” by his political rival.

“The Only One Who Calls Me Johnny”

“Nana and I began our national political careers in Parliament in the same year, 1996.

He has always greeted me with warmth, a firm handshake, and a smile,” President Mahama shared, adding, “He is, perhaps, the only person in my life who has persistently chosen to call me Johnny.”

Mahama’s revelation drew smiles and applause from the crowd as he reflected on the unique camaraderie and rivalry he has shared with Akufo-Addo over decades.

“While we belonged to opposing political parties, we shared a sense of mutual respect,” he said, stating that their shared journey is a testament to the enduring strength of Ghana’s democracy.

A Rivalry for the Ages

The two leaders have faced each other three times in national elections, creating one of the most storied political rivalries in Ghana’s history.

Reflecting on their journey, Mahama said, “In those early days, we probably could not have imagined that destiny would bring us to the leadership of our respective parties and that we would have to face off three separate times as we each vied for the highest office in the land.”

Despite the fierce battles at the polls, Mahama highlighted their mutual understanding of the greater goal: serving the people of Ghana.

“He and I both understood on that day, as I am sure we do today, that it is the people of Ghana we serve,” he affirmed.

A Legacy of Maturity and Democracy

Mahama praised Ghana’s democratic resilience, describing his inauguration as a celebration of the nation’s growth.

“Today, we are making a different kind of history, one that speaks to our maturity as a democracy, a nation of citizens enfranchised with the authority to determine their political future at the polls,” he said.

The significance of their shared transitions—Mahama as outgoing President in 2017 and now as incoming President in 2025—was not lost on him.

“It seems fitting that I share this stage and this unique, historical distinction with Nana Akufo-Addo twice,” he remarked.

A Final Farewell with Gratitude

In a touching moment, Mahama acknowledged that this would likely be their final encounter under such circumstances.

“Nana, as this will be our final meeting under such circumstances, and as I look back on the journey we have travelled—two much younger men who entered Parliament together—I have to say that you have, without exception, been a worthy opponent,” he said, to applause from the audience.

John Mahama’s lighthearted comment about their physical appearances in the early days added a personal touch.

“I with a full head of black hair and you with the same bald head and round eye-glasses,” he quipped, drawing laughter from the crowd.

Honouring Ghana’s Democratic Legacy

Mahama’s speech also reflected on Ghana’s democratic journey, recalling the nation’s first transition in 1993 and subsequent milestones.

“Thirty-two years ago, on January 7th, Ghana made its first and most successful democratic transition—a reset,” he said, emphasizing the importance of the democratic processes that have shaped the country.

By highlighting his relationship with Akufo-Addo, Mahama underscored the importance of unity and respect in politics.

His reflections painted a picture of rivalry tempered by mutual respect, leaving Ghanaians with a message of hope for continued democratic growth.

Akufo-Addo pardons Ato Essien, 8 others https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-pardons-ato-essien-8-others/ Mon, 06 Jan 2025 11:22:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490283 President Nana Akufo-Addo has exercised his prerogative of mercy under Article 72(1) of the Constitution to grant pardons to nine convicted persons, including the former CEO of Capital Bank, William Ato Essien.

He was sentenced in December 2023 to 15 years in prison for his role in the collapse of Capital Bank.

Ato Forson and two other accomplices were charged with 23 counts of conspiracy, stealing from the ¢620 million liquidity support given to the bank by the Bank of Ghana (BoG), to enable it to service its maturing debt.

He was initially sentenced to pay GHS 90 million but defaulted after part of the amount was paid.

He earlier paid ¢30 million upfront and was required to pay ¢20 million as the first instalment of the ¢60 million outstanding amount by April 28, 2023. This was in the criminal case filed against him following the collapse of the bank.

Following his inability to fully pay the said amount back to the State after agreeing to do so, he was handed the sentence.

However, after serving barely a year of his sentence, Ato Essien has been pardoned due to severe medical conditions. He is reportedly suffering from life-threatening health issues and has undergone several surgeries.

He is one of the nine persons Akufo-Addo showed clemency.

The other individuals are:

Philip Akpeena Assibit who is serving time for causing financial loss to the State in relation to the National Youth Employment Programme, Assibit has served 6 of his 12-year sentence and has requested release due to health concerns.

Akwasi Alhassan, convicted of murder in 1993 and sentenced to death, Alhassan has been in prison for over three decades. His sentence has now been commuted to life imprisonment.

Beatrice Ofori, convicted in 2023 for human trafficking, Ofori, 64, has been suffering from severe hypertension that has left her bedridden and unable to move. She currently resides in the prison infirmary.

Frank Obeng, convicted of manslaughter in 2004 and sentenced to 40 years. His sentence has been reduced to 12 years.

Stephen Nyarko, convicted of conspiracy to rob and robbery. He has served 22 years of his 30-year sentence and will soon be granted release.

Osman Inusah, convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery, Inusah was found not guilty of armed robbery. A petition for his release highlighted his mental health issues, prompting the President’s intervention.

Joseph Nana Kwaku Boateng, convicted for attempted export and possession of narcotic substances in 2019. Boateng, who has served 8 years, will be released after serving part of his 15-year sentence.

Emmanuel Adu Mensah was recently sentenced in April 2024 for possession of narcotics. Mensah remains incarcerated in Nsawam Prison.

Article 72(1) of the Constitution of Ghana gives the President the power to grant pardon, respite (partial pardon), substitute punishment or remit punishment.

The President can exercise this power in respect of any criminal offence, whether it was committed before or after the Constitution came into force, and whether sentences were handed during his administration or not.

In his 2024 State of the Nation Address, he described the initiatives as transformative for education in Ghana.

The president stated that many of these students would not have had access to secondary education without these programs.

To further enhance technical and vocational education, 34 new TVET institutions have been established, and 62 existing ones have been upgraded to equip students with 21st-century skills.

Akufo-Addo reflected on the bold decision to implement Free SHS during his first term, despite calls for a gradual rollout.

From 2020, the first batch of Free SHS beneficiaries began sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

He highlighted a marked improvement in results, with 65% of candidates achieving grades between A1 and C6 in all four core subjects, a significant increase compared to previous years.

2024 SONA: I was prepared to put my presidency on the line – Akufo-Addo on galamsey https://www.adomonline.com/2024-sona-i-was-prepared-to-put-my-presidency-on-the-line-akufo-addo-on-galamsey/ Fri, 03 Jan 2025 12:22:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489772 President Nana Akufo-Addo has described the fight against illegal mining as one of the most challenging undertakings of his presidency.

Addressing parliament during the 2024 State of the Nation Address, he outlined the sacrifices and achievements tied to the campaign, adding that he almost out his presidency on the line.

The president said tackling galamsey was a priority from the onset of his administration due to its devastating impact on the environment and water bodies.

However, the decision came at a significant political cost, with many of his party’s parliamentary candidates losing their seats in the 2020 elections.

The challenge persisted into his second term as the government continued to enforce measures against illegal mining activities.

“I made a commitment to tackle galamsey, a phenomenon which has been ravaging our environment and destroying our lands. I knew it was not going to be easy, but I felt strong enough on the need to protect our environment and was prepared to put my presidency on the line to defend lives and water bodies.”

Despite the challenges, the campaign led to notable successes in the mining sector. Ghana became the leading gold producer in Africa, recording 4 million ounces of gold production in 2023.

Other achievements include the construction of a 400kg-capacity gold refinery and the completion of discussions for a $450 million manganese refinery at Nsuta.

Akufo-Addo made sent a reminder to miners of responsible practices in the need to protect Ghana’s natural resources for future generations.

“I pray more of us get to embrace the need for protection of our lands and waterbodies.
Fight against galamsey is not fight against mining or extraction of the goLd the almighty has generously endowed us with. We owe it to future generations to extract in manner that protects environment”.

He called on all stakeholders to support efforts to balance resource extraction with environmental preservation.

Krontihene of Akyem Asuo warns clergy, chiefs who stayed silent under Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/krontihene-of-akyem-asuo-warns-clergy-chiefs-who-stayed-silent-under-akufo-addo/ Sun, 29 Dec 2024 10:17:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488474 The Krontihene of Akyem Asoum, Nana Boadi Amponim Abodade III, has offered his candid assessment of outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo’s legacy.

In a recent interview, the chief acknowledged the President’s uncanny ability to suppress dissent but noted that this feat was viewed with a mix of awe and scepticism.

“Even Lucifer had something good about him. They said he was a good singer; he had a magical voice. Lucifer, yes, so definitely, there will be something good about Nana Akufo-Addo,” Nana Boadi said, setting the tone for his analysis of the president’s time in office.

Among the “good things” the Krontihene attributed to President Akufo-Addo was his ability to keep key societal figures—including clergy, media, and chiefs—strangely silent on critical national issues.

“The clergy, the media, the chiefs, all the outspoken people, all of a sudden became silent. You see, when you have about 32 million people with 32 million problems breathing down your neck, even the strongest of minds could bend,” Nana Boadi observed.

He continued, “Yes, his ability to tame them, keep them silent, is somehow mesmerizing to some of us. So, in that case, yes, he was good. But at the same time, now that there’s a new president, we are watching. Eyes are watching those who were kept mute.”

The traditional leader warned that the public would not hesitate to call out hypocrisy among those who had remained silent during President Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

“If all of a sudden they come out loud, then we will tell them that, yes, they are the hypocrites and saboteurs. We can boldly face them and say to their faces that they were part of the problem,” he stated.

Despite his grudging acknowledgement of the president’s ability to manage dissent, Nana Boadi expressed relief at the end of Akufo-Addo’s presidency.

“Overall, some of us are happy to see his back. A lot of chiefs are saying that when it comes to their policies and their gatherings, they will only greet him, because, traditionally, they are supposed to. But it will be without, of course, a certain hidden level of cynicism and even disdain.”

Reflecting on the future, the Krontihene emphasised the anticipation for change under the new leadership.

“Tomorrow is pregnant. There’s a lot that Ghanaians are anticipating, and we hope it will be a positive, positive change,” he concluded.

Constitution Review Consultative Committee report submitted to Akufo-Addo – Full presentation https://www.adomonline.com/constitution-review-consultative-committee-report-submitted-to-akufo-addo-full-presentation/ Sat, 28 Dec 2024 13:10:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488291 The Constitution Review Consultative Committee has submitted its report to President Akufo-Addo.

The report outlined significant proposals to amend Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

Among the key recommendations is the removal of Article 68 (5), which exempts presidents from paying taxes on their salaries and emoluments.

The committee believes that scrapping this exemption would set a positive example for the citizenry and uphold the principle of equality before the law.

Speaking on Newsfile on JoyNews, Chairperson for the committee, Clara Beeri Kasser-Tee elaborated on the report’s content, stressing its alignment with the rule of law.

President Akufo-Addo has reportedly assured that the report will be forwarded to incoming President John Mahama, along with additional notes for consideration.

In addition to tax reforms for the presidency, the committee recommended capping the size of parliament at 277 members.

This would require amendments to Article 93 and Article 47 to ensure that the country’s constituencies do not exceed this limit, a measure aimed at curbing the ballooning size of Ghana’s legislature.

The report also advocated for a reduction in the size of government by abolishing Deputy Ministerial positions and the role of Regional Ministers.

It proposed that the President appoint no more than 25 Ministers of State, sufficient for the efficient running of the government.

The committee’s sweeping recommendations are aimed at fostering accountability, equality, and efficiency in governance.

By advocating for changes such as requiring presidents to pay taxes and streamlining government and parliamentary structures, the proposals seek to address longstanding concerns about the country’s governance framework.

The STEM-focused schools and centres being developed across the country are expected to prioritise disciplines such as coding, data science, and renewable energy, creating opportunities for students to participate in emerging industries.

“Let us reach out to those who are less fortunate, offering them not just material help, but also the priceless gift of our time, love, and presence,” he added.

Akufo-Addo approves visa-free entry to Ghana for all African nationals https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-approves-visa-free-entry-to-ghana-for-all-african-nationals/ Wed, 25 Dec 2024 12:48:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2487718 President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has fulfilled his pledge to introduce visa-free travel for citizens of all African nations to Ghana.

The promise, made during the Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD 2024) in January, was aimed at enhancing the free movement of people, goods, and services across the continent.

With executive approval granted on Wednesday, 18 December 2024, this policy is set to take effect before the end of Akufo-Addo’s term on 6 January 2025.

This policy marks a significant step towards realising the African Union’s vision of economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Ghana will join Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin as the only African countries offering visa-free entry to all African passport holders.

The move is expected to bolster efforts to create the world’s largest single market, encompassing 55 nations, and enhance collaboration between African governments and businesses.

In his APD 2024 keynote address, delivered under the theme “Developing Prosperity in Africa: Produce, Add Value, and Trade,” President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the visa-free initiative.

“Many of you had to acquire a visa to attend this event,” he said, referencing a special arrangement that reduced visa fees for participants.

“The government of Ghana is committed to ensuring visa-free travel for all Africans, and the process has begun to implement the policy this year,” he assured attendees.

The policy has now been communicated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the Ministry of the Interior, which have commenced preparations for its execution.

The Ghana Immigration Service is expected to announce the official start date, which is anticipated to be Wednesday, 1 January 2025.

The move is expected to facilitate business, tourism, and cultural exchange across the continent, solidifying Ghana’s position as a leader in African unity and integration.

Criticism of restrictive immigration policies in other African nations underscores the importance of this initiative.

Business mogul, Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, highlighted the frustrations of navigating visa requirements across the continent.

“As an investor, I have to apply for 35 different visas,” he lamented at a business forum in Rwanda.

Mr Dangote’s remarks reflect the challenges African entrepreneurs and investors face, who often find it easier to travel to Europe or the US than neighbouring African countries.

Ghana, home to the AfCFTA Secretariat, has long championed the vision of a borderless Africa, a goal first articulated by its founding leader, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

While Ethiopia, host to the African Union’s headquarters, has faced criticism for its restrictive visa policies, Ghana’s initiative sets a progressive example.

I urge security to take firm stance against post-election violence – Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/i-urge-security-to-take-firm-stance-against-post-election-violence-akufo-addo/ Tue, 24 Dec 2024 18:48:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2487589 President Akufo-Addo has called on the security forces to take a firm stance against any acts of violence that threaten the peace and stability of the country following the 2024 general elections.

The President noted that, the pursuit of political power must always be rooted in service to the people, and not in the use of force or intimidation.

Addressing the nation on December 24 while delivering his final Christmas message, President Akufo-Addo stressed that the peace of the nation is sacred and must never be compromised for political ambition.

He added that the Rule of Law will always prevail, regardless of any challenges.

“Let us never forget, the seeking power is not a call to arms, but rather a call to service those who might contemplate using violence to achieve their aims. Know this. Our nation’s peace is sacred, and it will not be sacrificed on the altar of ambition. The Rule of Law will prevail no matter what.

“I urge the security services to take a firm stance against any actions that threaten the stability and harmony of our land,” he said.

His comments follow increased tensions and disputes over election results in certain areas of the country. Reports have emerged of post-election unrest, including incidents of vandalism directed at public property and Electoral Commission offices.

President Akufo-Addo condemned the unwarranted acts of violence that have marred an otherwise commendable democratic process.

He emphasised that peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but the ability to handle conflict through peaceful means.

“Let us ensure that every election deepens our democracy and fortifies our unit as the saying goes, peace is not the absence of conflict, but the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means. Let us embrace this wisdom as a guiding principle in our journey forward,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo has delivered his final Christmas message to Ghanaians as his tenure as President nears its conclusion.

In a heartfelt televised address on Tuesday, December 24, the outgoing President extended warm holiday wishes and reflected on themes of gratitude, unity, and hope for the nation’s future.

“As we gather around our tables to share meals, let us think of those who make our celebrations possible—the security personnel standing guard so we may celebrate in safety, the health workers caring for the sick, the farmers, and fisherfolk whose labor feeds our families,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to remember the less fortunate, expressing hope that their prayers and actions would bring comfort and renewal to those in need.

Reflecting on his presidency, he spoke of Ghana’s immense potential: “Having come to the end of my lawful tenure as President and preparing to step into the next chapter of my life, I leave you with this thought: Ghana is a nation destined for greatness. “Merry Christmas, my fellow Ghanaians.”

Ghana needs Presbyterian principles of hard work, humility to move forward – Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-needs-presbyterian-principles-of-hard-work-humility-to-move-forward-akufo-addo/ Tue, 24 Dec 2024 08:15:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2487296 President Nana Akufo-Addo says Ghana needs the principles of hard work, humility and stewardship that have been exhibited by the Presbyterian Church in its 196 years of existence in the country.

He said such principles, which have transformed the church not only as one of the largest denominations but a church that had stood firm as a guardian of righteousness and justice, when imbibed, would also bring the needed transformation that Ghana needs to move forward.

The President said this at the Bicentennial Anniversary Launch and service of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) on the theme: “PCG @ 200: Celebrating God’s Faithfulness and Impacting Generations through the Gospel.”

He said as President, he had often drawn strength and wisdom from the Word of God and reflected that faith and governance must work hand in hand for a nation to progress.

“Proverbs chapter 14 verse 34 reminds us that righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people… It is this pursuit of righteousness that must continue to drive us individually and collectively as a nation,” the President said.

He commended the PCG for its contribution in key areas including education, health care, social justice and shaping the social, moral and intellectual development of society.

“The Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s contributions to our nation are unparalleled…schools such as the Presbyterian Boys Senior High School, the Aburi Girls Senior High School and numerous others across the country are a testament to the church’s commitment to nurturing generations of responsible citizens,” he said.

Rt Rev Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, Moderator of the General Assembly of the PCG, in a sermon, said, the Church had served God and mankind well and promoted the Christian faith, values and practices in the country.

He said the church was not ready to sacrifice their ground of morality for anything, adding that they had become a blessing to Ghana in areas of health, education and agriculture and by laying a foundation for the acceptance of the Christian faith and its growth since it was the first to introduce the Christian faith in the country.

The Moderator urged President Akufo-Addo to assent to the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill since the Supreme Court had dismissed the suits against the bill.

The President donated Gh¢50,000 to support the preparation of the Bicentennial Anniversary celebration, which is scheduled for 2028. A Bicentennial Anniversary cloth was outdoored for all Presbyterians across the country to patronise it.

President Akufo-Addo commissions Ezinlibo Forward Operating Base for Armed Forces https://www.adomonline.com/president-akufo-addo-commissions-ezinlibo-forward-operating-base-for-armed-forces/ Mon, 23 Dec 2024 20:12:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2487194 In a historic stride towards safeguarding Ghana’s territorial waters and ensuring national security, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned the Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Ezinlibo on Monday, December 23, 2024.

The facility stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to strengthening the nation’s defense infrastructure and protecting its economic assets.

During the ceremony, President Akufo-Addo reflected on a promise made in 2018 to equip the Ghana Armed Forces to tackle modern security challenges.

“Today’s commissioning marks the realization of that pledge,” he said, lauding the unwavering dedication of the Defence Ministry under Hon. Dominic Nitiwul and his deputy, Hon. Kofi Amankwa Manu, in bringing the vision to life.

The FOB at Ezinlibo joins a growing network of bases across the country, including those at Tilli, Bui, Sankore, and Kenyase, with additional facilities planned for Keta, Ada, Winneba, and Elmina. Strategically positioned, the Ezinlibo base enhances Ghana’s naval capacity to combat piracy, illegal fishing, and transnational crimes within the Gulf of Guinea.

The new base is seen as a critical response to the complex security threats plaguing the Gulf of Guinea. It provides the Navy with the tools to monitor and safeguard Ghana’s offshore oil and gas resources while enhancing regional security cooperation.

President Akufo-Addo underscored its importance, stating, “This facility symbolizes progress, security, and national resolve. It enables the Navy to act swiftly and precisely in protecting our maritime interests.”

The base will also serve as a logistics hub, enhancing operational readiness and facilitating training. This investment aligns with Ghana’s broader aim to maintain peace and stability in West Africa, fostering economic growth and regional cooperation.

President Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude to the Western Nzema Traditional Council, led by Paramount Chief Awulae Annor Adjaye III, for their instrumental role in providing land for the project. Their generosity was described as a selfless commitment to national development.

He also commended the Ghana Armed Forces for their dedication and sacrifice, reaffirming his pride in their efforts to maintain peace and stability. To the contractors and consultants who brought the project to fruition, the President offered his congratulations: “Ayekoo! Your commitment to excellence has ensured this project was delivered on time and to the highest standards.”

As Ghana moves forward with plans for additional FOBs, the Ezinlibo facility represents a step towards modernizing the nation’s defense capabilities.

President Akufo-Addo called on all Ghanaians to unite in the spirit of patriotism and hard work, emphasizing the collective effort required to secure a safe and prosperous future.

The commissioning of the Ezinlibo FOB not only strengthens Ghana’s maritime defenses but also reaffirms the government’s commitment to the Armed Forces and the country’s security. As President Akufo-Addo declared the facility officially commissioned, he closed with a prayer for Ghana’s continued growth and strength, echoing the hopes of a nation poised to meet its challenges head-on.

The Ezinlibo Forward Operating Base stands as a beacon of progress, symbolizing Ghana’s readiness to tackle the evolving security threats of today. As the nation fortifies its maritime domain, the commissioning of this strategic facility underscores the essential role of collective effort, investment in modern infrastructure, and unwavering commitment to national security.

Post-election violence: Akufo-Addo calls on Police to review practices https://www.adomonline.com/post-election-violence-akufo-addo-calls-on-police-to-review-practices/ Mon, 23 Dec 2024 08:07:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486759 President Nana Akufo-Addo has commended the Ghana Police Service for the security measures instituted during the 2024 election.

However, he has called on the leadership to review its operational strategies to avoid the recurrence of post-election violence.

President Akufo-Addo has advocated for the implementation of swift mechanisms to deal with such incidents.

The President was speaking at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s Bicentennial Anniversary launch at the Osu Castle on Sunday, December 22, 2024.

President Akufo-Addo expressed concern that post-election violence does not augur well for the image of Ghana’s democracy.

“I commended the security service, especially the Police for the effective monitoring of the elections which ensured a peaceful nature.

“But I would like to ask the leadership of the police to review its practices that allow post-electoral violence to linger for too long before it’s brought under control,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo further emphasised the need for a collective effort to protect the nation’s hard-won peace and democratic stability.

The 2024 election despite been generally peaceful was marred by vandalism, looting and attacks on several state institutions.

The incidents were allegedly linked to supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who claimed to be protecting state assets as the government to be sworn in on January 7, 2025.

Over 100 people were arrested in connection with the incidents and arraigned in court.

This was at a ceremony at the Jubilee House, Thursday.

President Akufo-Addo said the presentation of the charters means the two universities “are going to transition into autonomous Universities, with the capacity, now, to award their own degrees and diplomas.”

It also underscores the government’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and nation-building.

The institutions include; the National Defence College, KAAF University College, Heritage Christian University College, Ensign Global College, University College of Gold Coast, Knutsford University College and Thrivus Institute for Biomedical Sciences and Technology.

The rest are; Nobel International Business School, Entrance University College of Health Sciences, Accra Metropolitan University College, African University College of Communications, Garden City University College, Family Health University College and Academic City University College.

The President described the event as a “transformative milestone in the history of our nation’s tertiary education landscape.”

He lauded the vision and perseverance of the institutions, stating that the recognition reflects their dedication to meeting the highest standards in education.

“The grant of a Presidential Charter represents the highest recognition that a tertiary institution in Ghana can achieve.

It is the result of a rigorous process, as each university college must meet stringent criteria established by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, GTEC, comprising excellence in governance, quality assurance, academic delivery, research, and community engagement,” the President wrote on Facebook.

Akufo-Addo commissioned mere buildings, not hospitals – Kwame Sarpong https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-commissioned-mere-buildings-not-hospitals-kwame-sarpong/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 15:16:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485725 A research fellow at the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Kwame Sarpong Asiedu has accused outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo of merely commissioning buildings and calling them hospitals.

According to Asiedu, these structures cannot be considered proper hospitals if they lack essential medical resources such as beds and healthcare professionals.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, December 19, he explained that a hospital does not function properly if it has no medical beds available and lacks health professionals to care for patients.

He pointed out that, the country’s current hospital capacity is insufficient when compared to the number of doctors available, particularly in the five teaching hospitals and regional hospitals.

“Let’s say if we have 7,000 doctors in Ghana and that includes doctors who have left the country, if we say that the 5 teaching hospitals have a minimum of 200 doctors each because we have people training and all that, that is 21,000 to 31,000 offers for 5 hospitals,” Dr Asiedu said.

He further stated that while the country has enough nurses based on the population ratio, the major problem is the inability to employ them due to financial constraints.

Dr Asiedu also highlighted that, ahead of the 2024 elections, the government had announced that the portal was open for the 2020 nursing graduates to apply for jobs.

He pointed out that many nurses who graduated between 2020 and 2023 are still unemployed, and the 2024 batch is set to join them.

“The government put information in different reports and documents knowing that few of us will read the documents and try and say if you cross-reference this information, it does not add up because what is in this document is different from what is in the other documents, meanwhile they are all official government documents,” he said.

However, Dr Asiedu said that despite the country training nurses, they remain unemployed due to a lack of funding.

He also commented on the government’s plans to build new hospitals, saying, “We are building 110 hospitals which we need 7.5 billion which we don’t have.

At the campaign, we had a president who sees all these documents, he commissioned all these things, he said, ‘Working around 3 buildings and cutting tapes and calling them hospitals, let’s stop the jokes in the country,” he ended.

Akufo-Addo gov’t has not approved new appointments – Fatimatu Abubakar [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-govt-has-not-approved-new-appointments-fatimatu-abubakar-audio/ Wed, 18 Dec 2024 09:49:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485059 The Minister for Information and spokesperson for the government’s 2024 Transition Team, Fatimatu Abubakar has stated that the Akufo-Addo administration has not authorized any last-minute recruitments, promotions, or financial transactions.

Her comments come in response to allegations from the incoming Mahama administration that certain appointments and payments have been backdated or carried out without proper authorization.

On Tuesday, December 17, 2024, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for the Mahama Transition Team, issued a warning that any unauthorized actions by the outgoing government would be reversed after the official transfer of power on January 7.

He claimed that some appointment letters and promotions were backdated, and there was no financial provision for the recruitments.

He also said any last-minute payments, appointments, or promotions—some of which are said to have been backdated—would not stand under the new administration. Public officials responsible for these actions would be held accountable.

But speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem show,  Madam Abubakar dismissed these allegations, adding that all ongoing processes, including recruitments in the nursing and police sectors, were initiated long before the election results.

“The Akufo-Addo government has not issued any new clearance for appointments or payments. These processes were budgeted for and approved long ago. It is simply not true that they were initiated after the election loss,” she explained.

Madam Abubakar urged the incoming NDC administration to remain patient as the handover date, January 7, approaches.

“Let’s not politicize routine administrative matters. The question should be whether the government is acting within the law—and we are,” she stated.

The Information Minister stated that, the current administration retains full authority until the official handover and assured the public that all actions being taken are legitimate.

“We are operating within the framework of the law. If there are allegations of illegality, they should be addressed through proper channels, whether during the transition or at any point in the past eight years,” Abubakar added.

His comments come amidst growing discontent among some NPP members, including MPs, who have pointed fingers at the outgoing president for the loss.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV on Tuesday, December 17, Mr Aboagye criticised the tendency to assign blame to one individual.

He argued that the defeat was not the fault of President Akufo-Addo alone but rather a collective failure that involved all members of the party, including government appointees.

He emphasised that every party member had a role to play in ensuring the NPP’s success or failure.

“It wouldn’t necessarily be Akufo-Addo’s direct fault, I could have contributed to it, and some other appointees could have contributed to it. People sitting in oil companies, financial institutions, and public institutions have been entrusted with the responsibility of the President,” he stated.

Mr Aboagye urged the party to avoid internal divisions and focus on rebuilding for future victories.

He called for introspection and unity, stressing the importance of addressing the factors that led to the defeat rather than engaging in a blame game.

If Akufo-Addo truly supported Bawumia, he would have taken policy steps to back him – MP https://www.adomonline.com/if-akufo-addo-truly-supported-bawumia-he-would-have-taken-policy-steps-to-back-him-mp/ Tue, 17 Dec 2024 08:19:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2484560 Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, Dr Emmanuel Marfo, has expressed dissatisfaction with President Akufo-Addo’s support for the New Patriotic Party(NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the elections.

Dr Marfo asserted that, if Akufo-Addo supported Dr. Bawumia and believed in his campaign messages, he [Akufo-Addo] would have made certain policy decisions.

‘If he truly supports Dr Bawumia, he should have taken policy steps to back him. But if the President himself doesn’t believe in Dr Bawumia’s message, why should the electorate?” he questioned.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, the lawmaker stated that the incumbent government’s policies contradicted Dr Bawumia’s campaign promises.

“Dr. Bawumia, during his campaign, clearly stated that LGBTQ+ would have no place in his administration. That was a strong message, and the timing was right for President Akufo-Addo to sign that into law when he had the opportunity.

“But that did not happen, creating the impression that the President and the Vice President were not on the same page,” he said.

This to him undermined the NPP’s efforts, citing the promise to cancel the E-levy among others.

“For someone championing digitalisation, the E-Levy was a drawback, yet the President had signed it into law. It became a nuisance for many people. What you are doing is so loud, I cannot hear what you are saying,” he stated.

These mixed signals Dr Marfo noted casts doubts on the credibility of Dr Bawumia’s promises.

‘If the government, which has the power now, cannot implement what Dr Bawumia is preaching, why should the electorate believe that he can do it when he assumes office?’ Dr Marfo quizzed.

‘Ken Ofori-Atta grew too pompous and more powerful than Akufo-Addo’ – Andy Appiah-Kubi https://www.adomonline.com/ken-ofori-atta-grew-too-pompous-and-more-powerful-than-akufo-addo-andy-appiah-kubi/ Mon, 16 Dec 2024 04:42:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2484079
The outgoing Asante Akim North MP, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has delivered a scathing critique of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, accusing him of being “too pompous” and wielding more power than even President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Speaking in an interview on TV3, he detailed what he described as the dysfunctional dynamics in the government under Mr Ofori-Atta’s tenure.

Mr Appiah-Kubi criticised the former Minister for his perceived arrogance and lack of responsiveness to the Economic Management Team (EMT), which is chaired by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The outgoing legislator was a leading figure in the #KenMustGo campaign, which called for the resignation of Mr Ofori-Atta amidst Ghana’s economic challenges.

“Part of the reason that we said he must go was that Ken was not responding to advice from even the Economic Management Team,” he revealed.

The MP alleged that instead of the Finance Minister answering to the Vice President, the opposite often occurred.

“Dr. Bawumia was supposed to be chairing the committee. How many times would they call? I know for a fact that Dr. Bawumia would have to go to the Minister of Finance in his ministerial office, instead of the Vice President inviting him.”

Appiah-Kubi characterised Mr Ofori-Atta as a “pompous” figure whose influence undermined the hierarchy of governance.

“He grew too pompous… When you have a system that has turned upside down like that, you don’t expect the system to generate the required results.”

The MP went further, claiming that Ofori-Atta wielded influence exceeding even the President’s authority.

“He was more powerful than Dr Bawumia, more powerful than even the President. The President would tell him, ‘Go and do this,’ and he’d say, ‘That won’t happen.’”

Mr Appiah-Kubi shared an incident where Ofori-Atta allegedly overstepped during a party meeting:

“He came to our meeting and said that, ‘I procured this victory.’ I stood up and said, ‘My friend, what are you saying? I didn’t see your hand in love [the campaign efforts].’”

The MP recalled challenging Ofori-Atta’s assertion that he single-handedly secured the party’s electoral success:

“It cannot be the case that you, as a single person, procured victory for everybody.”

Despite the tense dynamics, Mr Appiah-Kubi lauded Vice President Bawumia for his composure amid the challenges.

“Let me commend Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the patience he had. I wouldn’t have survived that kind of treatment,” he said.

The MP contrasted Bawumia’s calm demeanour with his own limits, expressing admiration for the Vice President’s ability to navigate the strained relationship with Ofori-Atta.

Appiah-Kubi lamented the state of governance during Ofori-Atta’s tenure, describing it as riddled with disrespect and dysfunction:

“The system turned upside down. Disrespect…You don’t expect such a system to deliver the results we need.”

Treat 2024 elections as a referendum on Akufo-Addo’s leadership – Edem Agbana to NPP https://www.adomonline.com/treat-2024-elections-as-a-referendum-on-akufo-addos-leadership-edem-agbana-to-npp/ Sat, 14 Dec 2024 09:22:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2483719 Edem Agbana, the Member of Parliament-elect for Ketu North, has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to accept the results of the 2024 elections as a clear verdict on the performance of the Akufo-Addo government.

Speaking during an interview on Citi FM on Friday, Agbana emphasized that the election outcome reflected widespread dissatisfaction with the governance provided by the NPP, which ultimately led to their defeat.

According to Agbana, the election results show that the overwhelming majority of Ghanaians were unimpressed by the current administration’s performance.

“The NPP must accept that the election was a verdict on the performance of the Akufo-Addo government. The verdict is that the majority of Ghanaians are not impressed with the kind of governance that the NPP provided,” he stated.

He also noted that the desire for change in leadership was a key factor in the election, pointing to the fact that even constituencies traditionally regarded as NPP strongholds had been won by the opposition.

Mr Agbana further highlighted that the results vindicated President Mahama’s focus on the economy during his campaign.

“The verdict is that President Mahama has been vindicated when he kept saying on the campaign platforms that it is about the economy,” Mr Agbana said.

He explained that the economic concerns voiced by Ghanaians were at the heart of the election, with many citizens seeking improvements in their living conditions.

Reflecting on his campaign experiences, Mr Agbana shared that during their visits to communities across the country, many Ghanaians expressed frustration with the surge in food prices and the unfavourable exchange rate.

“The people wanted improvements in their living conditions. People were complaining about the surge in food prices, people were complaining about the exchange rate,” he added. These concerns, Mr Agbana argued, played a significant role in the electoral outcome.

I don’t think Akufo-Addo should be blamed for NPP’s defeat – Kennedy Nyarko [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/i-dont-think-akufo-addo-should-be-blamed-for-npps-defeat-kennedy-nyarko-audio/ Sat, 14 Dec 2024 09:21:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2483713 Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko has fought off assertions that President Akufo-Addo should be blamed for the New Patriotic Party‘s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 election.

Mr Nyarko has said he disagrees with such a school of thought, stating that Akufo-Addo was not solely responsible for governance.

Following the NPP’s humiliating defeat in the just-ended parliamentary and presidential election, Akufo-Addo has been blamed for the outcome.

Many have opined that the 2024 election was a punishment from Ghanaians against the Akufo-Addo-led government.

However, in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the lawmaker acknowledged there were shortfalls, but all the blame cannot be placed on Akufo-Addo’s doorstep.

“He was not the only person running the government so do you think he will wish bad for his people. As a president, the interest of the nation is a priority to him.

“He takes advice from the people around him. I think if Akufo-Addo didn’t have the interest at heart, he would have been adamant about a lot of things look at the interventions he rolled out during the Covid-19 pandemic. The intention of the government is to protect lives and properties,” he explained.

He added that the defeat should be a lesson for the NPP going forward.

Reflecting on the calls for the dismissal of former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, the lawmaker noted it was in good faith without any ill motive.
