Suspected gunman arrested in Binduri; ammunition retrieved during military operation

-

A suspected gunman has been arrested in Binduri, in the Upper East Region, during a cordon and search operation as part of intensified military efforts to restore calm in the Bawku enclave.

The development was confirmed in a statement by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) following reports of sporadic gunshots near the Binduri Central Market in the early hours of Monday.

A joint team from the 11 Mechanised Battalion and the Joint Task Force, with support from the Police, swiftly moved to the scene.

During the operation, security personnel retrieved an AK-47 rifle, a G3 rifle, an empty M16 magazine, 370 rounds of M16 and AK-47 ammunition, 128 rounds of G3 ammunition, a machete, four fragmentation jackets, a pair of boots, and one helmet.

The suspect has since been handed over to the police for further investigation.

Later the same day, the military thwarted an attempt by unidentified gunmen to infiltrate Binduri. An exchange of gunfire ensued between the armed men and security personnel, forcing the attackers to retreat.

Meanwhile, GAF says troops remain on high alert to respond to any further disturbances, although calm has been restored in the area.

The Force further assured the public that it is working closely with other security agencies to support peace efforts in Bawku.

It also urged residents and the general public to cooperate with security personnel and support ongoing efforts to restore normalcy.
