Deputy Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini, has defended the importance of deputy ministerial positions in Ghana, emphasizing their role in mentorship, emergency response, and government efficiency.
During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Wednesday, February 27, Suhuyini argued that deputy ministers are crucial in supporting their respective ministries, particularly those with heavy workloads that may be too demanding for a single minister.
He noted that the debate over the necessity of these roles often stems from personal experiences rather than an objective assessment of their impact.
Suhuyini also highlighted the mentorship opportunities these positions provide, describing them as a vital training ground for future political leaders.
He explained that deputies gain practical exposure to governance and policymaking, ensuring policy continuity and strengthening government institutions.
“My personal view is that even as MPs, we have aides, and there is always a need for fallbacks in times of emergencies. I think the conversation around the relevance of deputy ministers arises from the experiences some individuals have had in ministries they were appointed to,” he stated.
