The Member of Parliament for Subin, Kofi Obiri Yeboah, has called on the government to introduce a mandatory insurance policy for traders to protect their businesses from unforeseen disasters such as fire outbreaks.
His appeal follows a devastating fire at Adum in the Central Business District of Kumasi on Friday, March 21, which left nine people injured and destroyed several shops and properties.
Addressing Parliament on Monday, March 24, the Subin MP urged both the government and international organizations to provide relief and long-term support for affected traders.
“I urge the government to introduce conscious policies that will support the informal sector in accessing insurance packages. This will ensure that in the event of such unforeseen disasters, our traders and businesses have adequate opportunities to recover,” he stated.
He also stressed the need to change negative perceptions about insurance, saying, “Insurance can no longer be seen as a loss-making venture; it must be made a necessity to safeguard the livelihoods of our traders and sustain our local economy.”
