Stop feeding kids with confectionaries – Nutritionist warn mothers

-

Clinical Nutritionist Dr. Benjamin Nuako has cautioned mothers who have made it a habit of feeding their children with sweets to stop immediately because it is a major cause of diabetes among children.
Speaking on ‘Nkwa Hia’, a health talk show on Adom TV, the nutritionist told host of the program Afia Amankwaah Tamakloe that children are increasingly getting diabetes in Ghana and the world at large because parents are constantly feeding them with toffees and drinks which are full of sugar.
He explained that excessive consumption of sweets damage the pancreas, especially children, and makes them prone to diabetes.
According to him, statistics show that one person die from diabetes every seven seconds, adding that between 2013 and 2014 alone, the disease killed 10 million people worldwide, including children.
This he said has made diabetes more dangerous as compared to malaria which claimed 13,340 lives between 2013 and 2014.
Dr. Benjamin Nuako further said sweet fruits such as apples, banana, orange are good for children.
He explained that apart from the sugar in the fruits, they also contain vitamins so they are better and healthier alternatives for children.
