Stephen Appiah calls for local players inclusion in Black Stars call-ups

Former Black Stars captain, Stephen Appiah has advocated for the inclusion of home-based players in the senior national team.

He noted that, these local talents have limited opportunities for national team call-ups but possess the capability to compete effectively with foreign-based players if given the chance to showcase their skills.

During a meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee reviewing a petition from the Save Ghana Football Demonstrators on Wednesday, Appiah emphasized the importance of instilling confidence in local players.

He recalled that in his playing days, there were players who seemed indispensable to the team, yet he and others worked hard to secure their positions.

“I think we have to give the local players the chance and the confidence to play for the national team,” Appiah said.

“So in our time, maybe there were certain players who looked as if they were key players in the team. We were not key players. We had players like William Tiero and others who were pushing us, so we have to make sure that we are not going to allow them to take our positions,” he added.

Currently, the Black Stars are struggling in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign, having suffered a 1-0 loss to Angola in Kumasi and a 1-1 draw against Niger in Morocco.

Angola leads Group F with 6 points, followed by Sudan with 3 points, while Ghana and Niger sit at the bottom with 1 point each.

Coach Otto Addo and his squad will regroup next month for crucial matches against Sudan in the qualifiers.
