The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has voiced strong criticism against President Nana Akufo-Addo regarding the selection process for recipients of the recent National State Awards.
Speaking during the 43rd-anniversary celebration of the 31st December Revolution, Asiedu Nketiah raised concerns about the credibility of the awards, claiming that some individuals did not merit the honors they received.
He also questioned the transparency of the selection criteria, arguing that it undermines the prestige and significance of the awards.
The NDC Chairman called for the introduction of legislation to regulate the organization and conferral of National and State Awards.
He emphasized the need for a transparent, fair, and merit-based system to uphold the integrity of such recognitions.
“State awards are serious matters. They must be reserved for individuals of distinction—people who have fought for a good cause. If we confer state honors on vigilante boys and girls, then we are teaching the youth that it is acceptable to pick up weapons and harm others. That it is acceptable to loot state coffers as a minister,” he stated.
Mr. Nketia proposed the establishment of a legally-backed committee to oversee the selection process for national awards.
“It is time we set up a proper committee, supported by law, to determine who truly deserves a national award,” he concluded.
