The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) reports that it disburses approximately GH¢400 million each month to over 300,000 pensioners, as part of its efforts to alleviate old-age poverty in Ghana.
The Trust further revealed that around 128,000 self-employed individuals have been registered under the scheme, which aims to extend its coverage and reduce poverty among retirees.
Speaking at the “Ops-A-Thon” Self-Employed Enrollment Drive (SEED) awareness event in Koforidua, SSNIT’s General Manager of Operations, Kingsley Adjei-Manu, encouraged self-employed workers and those in the informal sector to place their trust in SSNIT for securing their future.
“So far, we have enrolled about 128,000 self-employed persons in the scheme and continue to engage more people to join,” he said.
“Every month, we pay about GH¢400 million to over 300,000 pensioners, helping to reduce old-age poverty in Ghana. Our goal is to bring even more people into the scheme in the coming years to further combat poverty in retirement,” he added.
