The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has assured the public that the financial records of the 2023 African Games will be investigated.
Ghana, which hosted the 13th edition of the All-African Games from March 4 to March 23, 2024, reportedly spent $245 million on the event—a figure that has sparked widespread concern due to its magnitude.
According to the Local Organising Committee (LOC), the budget breakdown includes $195 million for infrastructure, $15 million for athlete support, and $48 million for operational costs. However, these expenditures have come under scrutiny.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Mr. Adams reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to reviewing the financial details.
He indicated that the issue would either be revisited through a resubmission of the previous report or assigned to the appropriate committee for further investigation.
“It is important to probe the African Games expenditure. Some hotels that gave their facilities out for the games are even complaining that they have not been paid,” the Member of Parliament for Buem constituency said.
“I can assure you that we will look into it, and the public will know the actual figures that were used to host the African Games,” he added.
Meanwhile, several advocacy groups have called on the government to launch a formal inquiry into the allocation and use of funds for the event.
