Facility management expert, Mr. Kwesi Mantey, says the National Sports Authority needs about 5 professional Facility Managers to partner it in overseeing and maintaining stadia and other sports facilities in Ghana.
Mr. Mantey who played a key role in getting the facilities Ghana used for AFCON 2008 and the Hockey Championship in 2009 explained that the country employed very competent contractors to build the edifices, adding, “We were instructed to conduct a maintenance process every three years which we have never done.”

“Ghana employed very competent contractors to erect her various stadia before AFCON 2008 but we have just failed to maintain them well and have employed the wrong people to manage the facilities”, Mr. Mantey bemoaned.
“We build good stadia in Africa that can be used for international games but our maintenance culture here is very bad hence the state of our facilities now – deplorable”.

Touching on the way forward, Mr. Mantey said the state must employ, not more than, five professional Facility Managers to partner the National Sports Authority to take care of our stadia.
“The National Sports Authority needs professional support from facility mangers to maintain and take good care of our facilities and we need to be fast about it.
Unfortunately, some of the people in charge of our facilities have no idea of the edifice and how to maintain it”, he added.
