Spiky Nkrumah sets up crowdfunding campaign as CAF appeals $250K copyright ruling

-

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appealed a court ruling that awarded Ghanaian music producer Kobby Spiky Nkrumah $250,000 in damages for copyright infringement.

The Commercial Court in Accra had ruled on July 17, 2024, that CAF unlawfully used Nkrumah’s track, Okomfo Anokye, in promotional materials for the 2018 CAF Awards without his consent.

Following the appeal, Nkrumah has launched a crowdfunding campaign to cover legal expenses, citing concerns over the financial strain of prolonged litigation.

“CAF is trying to drag this fight out, using their deep pockets and legal muscle to exhaust me into giving up,” he stated.

The case has gained widespread attention, with the hashtag #CAFMustPaySpiky trending on social media. Critics have accused CAF of exploiting African creatives while ignoring the court’s decision.

The appeal is now pending as both parties prepare for the next phase of legal proceedings.
