Spare parts dealers accuse gov’t of collapsing their businesses

-

Spare parts dealers at Kokompe in the Greater Accra region have expressed worry over what they describe as a deliberate attempt by the government to collapse their businesses.

The disgruntled traders have said they believed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to be business-friendly, only to witness what they describe as detrimental taxation measures.

In an interview with Adom News, the traders said all appeals and concerns over high taxes, increased import duties coupled with harassments have fallen on deaf ears.

“Under John Mahama’s administration, one person could import and clear a 40-feeter container at the port but now, about 4 to 5 traders have to combine money to clear a 40-feeter container due to high import duties and the unstable exchange rates,” a dealer said.

Kokompe is one of the leading spare parts hubs in Accra.
But the once vibrant and busy trading area is gradually becoming cold as many have abandoned their jobs due to the high cost of doing business.
“The taxes are exorbitant; our businesses are gradually collapsing and we are really suffering,” another dealer said.
To add more pain to their sufferings, the continuous cedis depreciation they said has forced them to increase their products, which is driving customers away.
For them, an immediate intervention by government is the only expectation on their table.
