South African elected first Secretary-General of AfCFTA

South African national, Wamkele Mene, has been voted as the first Secretary-General of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat (AfCFTA).

Mr Mene, was endorsed at the 33rd Ordinary Session of the Heads of State and government of the African Union (AU) in Ethiopia, Addis Baba on Monday, February 10, 2020.

Previously working as the Head of Mission to the World Trade Organisation for South Africa and a senior trade diplomat, negotiating on behalf of South Africa at the World Trade Organisation, Mr Mene also worked as South Africa’s Chief Negotiator in the African Continental Free Trade Area Negotiations.

ALSO:

The first Secretary-General of the AfCFTA holds an LL.M in Banking Law and Financial Regulation from the London School of Economics and Political Science, an M.A. in International Studies and Diplomacy from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; and a B.A. Law from Rhodes University.

He defeated his very close contender Cecilia Akintomide, a Nigerian to clinch the top economic policy position on Monday.
