Grief and heartfelt tributes filled the National Theatre as Ghana’s filmmakers and industry players gathered to honour the late veteran actor Mawuli Yao Semevo.

The beloved actor tragically passed away on February 20, 2025, after suffering severe burns in a fire accident at his home.

He was remembered not only for his immense talent but also for his warmth, wisdom, and dedication to the arts.

Veteran actor David Dontoh, delivering a tribute on behalf of Ghollywood players, was overcome with grief and wept uncontrollably.

Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, James Gardiner, also spoke on behalf of the authority, acknowledging the late actor’s enduring legacy.

Fred Amugi and fellow veteran actors performed a touching choral piece, while a cultural troupe delivered a traditional dirge in Semevo’s honor.

Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Dzifa Abla Gomashie, and veteran actress Irene Opare were in attendance, paying tribute to a man whose impact on the creative arts will never be forgotten.

Other notable figures, including Catherine Afeku, Edinam Atatsi, Akofa Edjeani, and Inspector Bediako, graced the event.

The vigil also saw the presence of the cast of YOLO, as the late actor was actively involved in the production before his passing.
