President John Mahama has announced the introduction of a 20% allowance for teachers posted to rural and underserved areas.
Ahead of the 2024 elections, Mr. Mahama pledged to roll out this initiative as part of efforts to encourage teachers to accept and remain at their posts in deprived communities.
Delivering his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, February 27, 2025, he reiterated his commitment to improving education in rural areas.
“To motivate teachers and improve education in rural areas, the government will implement a 20% allowance for teachers who accept postings to deprived communities,” he stated.
The President also revealed that district assemblies would oversee the implementation of the scheme to ensure teachers stay in their designated posts.
In addition, Mr. Mahama announced plans to build teacher accommodation units in rural areas under the Teacher Dabre Initiative, stating, “No new school will be built without teachers’ accommodation.”
He emphasized that teacher welfare remains a key focus in the government’s efforts to enhance education nationwide.
