Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante-Twum, has disclosed that some members of the Executive Council have raised concerns about Otto Addo’s suitability to continue as head coach of the Black Stars.
The 47-year-old coach has come under intense scrutiny after Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. This marks a significant setback for the national team, which will miss the prestigious tournament for the first time in 20 years.
On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, Addo appeared before the Executive Council to present a detailed review of his technical reports.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Game Plan, Asante-Twum revealed that council members were divided on Addo’s future with the team.
“Some members argued that Otto Addo may not be the right person to take the team forward,” he said. “This includes preparations for the World Cup qualifiers and other future tournaments, despite his long-term contract. Others felt he could succeed with a strong support system, a new management team, and the necessary resources.”
However, one faction of the council was firm in their stance, questioning the point of retaining Addo after the team’s poor performance.
“If you play six matches without a single win, what is the justification? We need to move on without him,” one member reportedly argued.
Ghana finished at the bottom of Group F with just three points from six matches, marking a historic low for the Black Stars.
The team’s inability to secure even a single victory has fueled calls for significant changes within the coaching and management structure.
The 2025 AFCON tournament will take place in Morocco, but for the first time in two decades, Ghana will not be among the competing nations.
