Some EC staff must be investigated, they are not truthful – Ofosu-Ampofo [Audio]

Former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, has called for investigations and possible prosecution of some Electoral Commission (EC) staff for alleged dishonesty during the 2024 general elections.

His remarks follow allegations by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the NDC pressured EC officials into declaring parliamentary results in their favor in certain constituencies.

The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong-Kodua, listed constituencies such as Ablekuma North, Dome-Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Ahafo Ano North, Obuasi East, and Techiman South among others as areas of concern.

But reacting to this on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo refuted these claims and called for accountability within the EC.

“Some of the staff of the EC are not being truthful. They must be investigated and prosecuted. If you’ve lost, then you’ve lost—accept it. People are just being dishonest, and we must resist it,” he stated.

He also slammed the EC for inconsistencies in handling the elections, accusing the body of undermining its own principles.

“If the EC had stuck to their principles, this wouldn’t have happened. But now, they’re shifting the goalposts. There’s a need for serious electoral reforms to prevent such issues in the future,” he argued.

Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo said the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) had deployed observers across the country to monitor the elections, stressing that such monitoring ensures transparency.

“We cannot allow anyone to declare results arbitrarily. CODEO deployed observers, and the process must be credible and transparent,” he added.

He therefore urged the EC to prioritize transparency and adhere to the law to restore public confidence in the electoral process.

“If the EC cannot remain independent and principled, they risk damaging the trust Ghanaians have in the electoral system,” he warned.
