Smartphones on credit: Bawumia knows what he is saying – Fatimatu Abubakar [Listen]

-

Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar defended Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent proposal regarding smartphone purchases.

According to her, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is capable of implementing every policy he introduces.

“’Bawumia knows what he is saying. There are cheaper smartphones available that cost less than or a little over 1,000 cedis. It’s important to understand the full context and explanation before jumping to conclusions” she said.

Her comments followed Bawumia’s announcement that, if elected in December, he would implement a plan allowing Ghanaians to buy smartphones on credit with monthly payments of GHC1 or GHC2.

Mahamudu Bawumia has announced that his administration will see to it that Ghanaians buy smartphones on credit and pay GHC1 or GHC2 monthly instalments.

However, the promise has garnered a lot of backlash on social media with people questioning its feasibility.

But speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Mrs. Abubakar said the proposal is doable since a smartphone doesn’t necessarily mean an iPhone.

“This does not in any way negate the policy. It’s not a bad thing” she stressed.

The Information Minister expressed confidence in the government’s ability to make this initiative successful, despite skepticism.

“Whenever the government introduces something new, the naysayers claim it’s impossible, but we know it’s achievable” she noted.

“As it stands, about 18 million of the Ghanaian adult population have a Ghana Card. This allows us to roll out a national credit scoring system. Dr. Bawumia is linking the improvement of the digital divide and ensuring almost every Ghanaian has access to a smartphone with 100% internet penetration through the credit system,” she added.

Among many benefits, the operation of a Credit Scoring system will make it easier for the ordinary Ghanaian to purchase essentials such as cars, mobile phones, obtain loans at lower interest rates.
