1. Sitting like a man is good for women
Girls, how many times have you been told to ‘sit like a lady’? We are sure many times. Sitting like a lady typically means to sit with our legs crossed or at least close together. But next time, someone tells you that, tell them their advice is medically unsound. According to an orthopedic expert, sitting like a man is actually more beneficial for health.
This is because sitting like a man is good for your joint health, says Dr Barbara Bergin who is a certified orthopedic surgeon. Dr Barbara so strongly believes this that she even started a movement called S.L.A.M. (Sit Like A Man) to benefit women’s health.
2. Dr Barbara’s personal journey
The doctor realised that she started experiencing knee pain at the age of 32. The pain went away during the weekend, which made her wonder what changed over the weekend. She realised she didn’t have to drive her small car, which forced her legs and knees closed together and caused hip pain.
3. The science behind it
Women have a wider pelvis than men and thus the thighbone rotates internally from the hip joint. This rotation causes women’s knees to line up inside the hips in knock-kneed stance. The misalignment can lead to pain in the knees and hips.
So, sitting like a lady is actually hurting us. The doctor explains that with age, the condition worsens but sitting like a man can immediately ease the pain.
The sitting habits of women have a huge impact on their musculoskeletal problems. This can be changed easily by learning to sit like your male counterparts – spreading legs and sitting comfortably. It does work.
4. How to sit like a man?
To sit like a man, let your knees drop slightly apart. Your left leg should be on 7 o clock while the right leg should be at 5 o clock.
Do not spread your leg wider, like 8 o clock and 4 o clock position.
