Professor Charles Marfo has made a controversial statement about the illegal mining also known as galamsey crisis affecting Ghana.
Speaking with host Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom on Adom FM’s Burning Issues show, Professor Marfo expressed his frustration with the ongoing illegal activities, suggesting that drastic measures may be necessary to combat the issue.
In the interview, Professor Marfo emphasized the severity of the galamsey problem, stating, “If we are calling for an end to these destructive practices and individuals choose to defy these calls, they are showing blatant disrespect. In such cases, if force is used in self-defence, it should not be seen as an offence.”
The professor highlighted the environmental and health risks associated with illegal mining, particularly the use of harmful chemicals like mercury.
He warned that these chemicals are contaminating food sources and posing serious health risks. “If water is essential for life, then air is equally important. The chemicals used in illegal mining are poisoning our food and water, which is a grave concern,” he said.
