The Director of IT at the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Serebour Quaicoe has urged presidential aspirants to financial assistance from their supporters to raise the GH₵100,000 filing fees.

Ahead of the December 7 election, the EC has announced that male presidential candidates must pay GH¢100,000, while female candidates and persons with disabilities will pay GH¢75,000 as filing fees.

For parliamentary candidates, the filing fee is GH¢10,000, with a reduced fee of GH¢7,500 for female candidates and persons with disabilities.

But the announcement has been meet with mixed reactions amidst views that it exposes aspirants to the manipulation of financiers.

However, Dr Quaicoe has asserted that the decision to contest an election is a collective affair.

The former EC Director of Electoral Services was speaking at a forum organized by the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG) in Accra on Friday.

“Contesting an election is not an individual issue, if you don’t have the money you should be able to mobilize from your supporters.

“So if you are saying you want to be the president of Ghana and you not mobilizing people to pay  100,000 then how are you going to do the campaigning?” he admonished.
