Former Asante Kotoko head coach Maxwell Konadu has claimed that South Africa’s second-tier football league offers a higher level of competition than the Ghana Premier League.
Konadu made this assertion during an interview with Graphic Sports after recently parting ways with South African side Black Leopards.
Having managed several top clubs in Ghana, including Legon Cities and All Stars, the experienced coach praised the depth and quality of South African football, particularly at the lower levels.
He noted that even teams in the country’s second division enjoy strong financial backing, which allows them to attract top talent and maintain a high level of competitiveness.
“The second-tier league in South Africa is more competitive than the Ghana league,” Konadu said.
“They pay their players well, and that has attracted top talent. Even during international breaks, matches in those leagues are suspended because many players get national team call-ups,” he added.
Konadu, who also previously served as an assistant coach for the Black Stars, highlighted the contrast with Ghana’s domestic league, emphasizing the need for greater investment and structural improvement.
