Scrap Ghana Highways Authority – NPP Chairman advocates

The New Juaben North Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Boateng Agyemang, is advocating for the total extrication of the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA).

This is because Mr Agyemang feels the GHA has superintended over the deterioration of roads which the country has spent so many funds and must be scrapped.

He explained that the GHA has outlived its importance because roads in the country were in such bad state yet the GHA sits on the fence while they go bad without any intervention.

“As against the legislative duty of the Ghana Highway Authority, it is undeniable that the Authority has failed to match up to the expectations of road users,” Kwadwo Boateng Agyemang told Kingdom FM.

He noted that Ghana spends a lot of funds for road construction but road maintenance continues to be a bane, owing to the poor management by GHA.

Chairman Kwadwo Boateng Agyemang wants a monitoring team in place instead of the GHA, saying he was disappointed in the latter.

The Finance Minister in delivering the 2020 budget statement said there was going to be a focus on fixing roads across the country in 2020 and beyond.

“To get the road sector moving and contractors back to work, the government will pay 80% of all contractors,” the Finance Minister said.

The government has also identified what it described as “critical roads” across each of the 16 regions in the country.

The Finance Minister also revealed Cocobod had also secured funds to continue with ongoing and new cocoa roads.
