School of Hygiene trainees threaten demonstration over unpaid allowances

-

The Coalition of Students from the Schools of Hygiene is demanding payment of their trainee allowances, which have been unpaid for two years since January 2023, including a full year’s allowance for the 2021 certificate batch from the Ho School of Hygiene.

The students, concerned about potential long-term unemployment, report that engagements with the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources revealed delays due to a lack of financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance.

The Coalition’s General Secretary, Emmanuel Awuku, highlighted the challenges students are facing and called for the deployment of batches yet to be posted.

They are also threatening to stage a demonstration if their demands are not met.

“Tempers are rising among School of Hygiene trainees across the country, and the urge to resort to a massive demonstration at the presidency and the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources is reaching its peak daily.

“School of Hygiene trainees are also health trainees and remain constitutionally eligible to receive our trainee allowances. However, it seems stakeholders are using technicalities to exclude our people from the trainee allowance scheme. We haven’t received an allowance for two years now, and some have even completed their training without receiving a single cedi as trainee allowances,” he said.
