Editor of Kotoko Express and a Member of the Communications team of Asante Kotoko, Jerome Otchere believes Referee Samuel Sukah is a disgrace to football.
Hearts of Oak defeated Asante Kotoko in the Match Day 8 fixture of the Ghana Premier League at the Accra Sports Stadium through a penalty converted by defender, Vincent Atinga.
The Phobians ended their over seven year wait for a league victory over the Porcupine Warriors in Accra on Sunday.
The match appeared to be ending in a stalemate, until referee Samuel Sukah awarded a controversial penalty to Hearts of Oak.
It was a nerve-racking moment, particularly for the Phobians, but Vincent Atinga showed great composure and converted the spot kick, which gave Hearts their first league win over Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium in eight years.
The defeat ruined a great opportunity for Kotoko to overtake Aduana Stars who slipped up in Cape Coast on Saturday.
However, many football enthusiasts have questioned the attitude of the referee on the day after awarding a penalty to Hearts of Oak but Jerome Otchere however believes Samuel Sukah is a disgrace to football.
“This is disgrace to our football and I think especially Samuel Sukah does not know what clubs go through to prepare for these kind of matches,” he told Asempa FM.
“When the ball hit the defender, I thought it was penalty but after watching the replay over again, Samuel Sukah is a big disgrace to football and I will urge him to apiece Kotoko fans by rendering an apology.
“His attitude will not help our football and with what happened at the Accra Sports Stadium, nobody should clap for Samuel Sukah because if the match should have ended in a draw it would have been a true reflection of the game and for me he was ignorant and his performance was disgraceful and nobody can convinced me that we had such opportunities against Liberty and Chelsea when we were awarded a penalty.
He continued, “I know that we did not take our chances in the first half but anybody who will heap praises on Sukah for his performance on the day is not somebody I will not respect so I think he should apologize not only to Kotoko fans only but to the whole football fans.
”We always say that referees makes mistakes but Sukah knew what he was doing and this have attitude of him has told me that referees in Ghana do not care about their reputation.” He added.
Kotoko are currently at the 2nd position with 17 points and will play Inter Allies in Match Day 9.
