Sammy Kuffour regrets never winning AFCON

Former Ghana defender Samuel Osei Kuffour has expressed deep regret over never winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) during his illustrious career.

The ex-Bayern Munich center-back, who earned 54 caps for Ghana, featured in five AFCON tournaments but was unable to lift the coveted trophy, which remains his biggest disappointment.

“I never had the chance to win the AFCON, and it kills me every day,” Kuffour said in an interview with Sporty FM. He emphasized the tournament’s competitiveness, saying, “How many great players have won that title? It is a very difficult tournament to play because we know each other. The strength is good, the technique is good, the understanding of the game is always the same.”

Kuffour first gained international recognition at just 13 years old when he helped Ghana win the 1991 FIFA U-17 World Cup. By 17, he had made his senior debut for the Black Stars in a match against Sierra Leone.

Throughout his career, Kuffour won numerous trophies, including the UEFA Champions League with Bayern Munich, and scored six goals for the national team, solidifying his legacy as one of Ghana’s greatest defenders.
